Yamaziko is Misaki’s teacher, in matters of both combat and honor. She holds a revered place in the Ten Thunders, and she has trained many who now serve them behind a mask. Capable both with her bare hands and with a Yari, Yamaziko brings a finesse and level of experience to fighting that few can match. Even when her combat skills are not needed, her advice is always welcome.
Yamaziko is an efficient model for her cost. At a mere seven Soulstones, she has “Nimble,” a 3” melee range, and impressive damage. Her Df and Ml are low, but she makes up for it with damage and mobility. She gains bonuses against Masters (and penalties against Peons) with her “Honorable” ability, and she can use her “Master Tactician” action to force a Master to discard cards if they have hidden Schemes.
Ototo has always been strong, and combining that brute strength with proper training made Ototo one of the Oyabun’s most trusted servants. Upon coming to Malifaux, Ototo realized he could control the thunder itself. He has since donned a mask and discarded his given name in favor of Ototo. Now, he is a faceless servant, the visage of everything the Ten Thunders are capable of.
Ototo is a large melee model. His Massive Tetsubo’s attack has a 3” range, allowing him to lock down multiple enemies in combat. He also has “Hard to Kill” and the “Enrage” ability, which combo nicely together. Finally, he has “Laugh Off,” which prevents enemies from moving him. Ototo can simultaneously hold a location and pummel enemies, leaving other models free for different tasks. Who doesn’t want an enraged maniac on their side who laughs at the enemy as he wields a Massive Tetsubo?
Kang looms large, both in physical stature and in the power he holds among the rail workers. As Mei Feng’s right hand man, he takes his place of leadership on the line seriously, and he gladly takes part in any work his men have to do, no matter how tough. Of course, he is also highly capable in a fight, wielding his shovel or pick axe with equal precision and force whether it’s hitting the rail line or someone’s skull.
Kang buffs friendly models, giving bonuses when attacking Undead and Constructs and when making horror duels, which makes him a good pick against Resurrectionists. He also has a great melee attack at Ml 7 with high damage. In addition to this, he is a difficult model to take down, with a combination of “Hard to Kill” and a healing action that allows him to reach the brink of death but recover from there.
There are ancient things in Malifaux, long-forgotten, sleeping things that wait to be awoken. The Hungering Darkness was one such thing, but it is now awake. Thanks to two Neverborn who have taken the forms of Mr. Tannen and Mr. Graves, it now resides in the basement of the Honeypot Casino and uses the establishment’s proprietor, Jakob Lynch, to help spread the addictive Brilliance that brings it victims.
The Hungering Darkness is Jakob Lynch’s totem and may only be included in crews led by him. It is free, so Jakob Lynch should always bring along this model. For a totem, it has an amazing attack. It also has “Heed My Voice,” which can force enemy models to take an action controlled by The Hungering Darkness. On top of that, it can heal itself and is difficult to kill. In many ways, this totem is the power behind Jakob Lynch.
Fuhatsu was once a noble lord, commanding his troops with honor and respect, his blade felling his enemies with precision and grace. That was before the accident, though. Since then, life has become much more difficult for Fuhatsu. He still makes it into battle with the help of his loyal retainers, though not always with his pants on.
Fuhatsu is a shooting platform. His “Steam Gatling Burst” and “Steam Gatling Sweep” attack actions can lay down fire from across the field. The weak damage is low, but the moderate and severe damages are high, meaning he benefits greatly from anything that can give him Focus to increase his accuracy and/or damage. He is also hard to take down, with high Armor and a healing action. He is slow and has no melee, but you don’t take him for melee; you take him to hurtle devastating Gatling attacks at your enemy from across the board.
Lucas McCabe first met Sidir Alchibal during one of his many prison stints for tomb raiding. The two developed a solid friendship that persisted when they were released at roughly the same time. Sidir stays by McCabe’s side to this day, unleashing precise and measured violence when necessary. However, his reputation is often enough to prevent a fight.
Sidir is a sturdy shooting model. His Machine Gun has an excellent Sh of 7, and it has a Trigger to gain an extra shot, allowing him to lay down an impressive volley of fire. His melee attack is decent for his cost, and he is capable of healing for a free action. He also has the potential to give enemies the Slow condition. Sidir is simply a solid model with great shooting, good melee, and a few other useful tricks. Any crew can use this model well.
Not all monsters are from Malifaux. Ama No Zako terrorized Earth long before the Three Kingdoms were united. She disappeared, and most suspected she was just a legend. In reality she had traveled to Malifaux. Now that humans are pouring in, she is glad to torment her old prey once again. She draws her victims in with sweet whispers before feasting upon them.
Ama No Zako is a mercenary and may be hired by any faction. She is very mobile and does great damage in melee, although her Ml is relatively low. She has a few free actions to choose from. She can either force another model to take an action or she can turn the area around her into hazardous terrain until the end of the turn. This is a great model to pick off smaller targets, eliminating the enemy’s objective grabbers and blocking off areas of the board by making them hazardous.
Toshiro was the head of the Katanaka clan when the violence and depravity of the clan drove some of their forces to rebel. Toshiro held steadfast on the battlefield but was eventually slain by the traitors and left to rot in the sun. Yan Lo led his spirit back from the afterlife and reunited it with his crumbling body so he might once again call his long-dead army to him.
Toshiro is a melee model who is excellent at supporting Minions. He gives all friendly nearby Minions bonuses to attack, and he may take a free action to give nearby Minions either the Focused or Fast Condition. His Ancestral Katana is a great attack action with bonuses to hit and decent Triggers. Finally, he can take the “Command The Graves” upgrade to summon Ashigaru or Komainu. Summoning models at the proper time can win games, making Toshiro an amazing choice on many occasions. Toshiro is an excellent addition to any Minion-focused list; he works particularly well with Yan Lo.
Sensei Yu is a master of the five rivers styles. Though this affords him great political opportunities within the various temples, he has no political ambition. He is happy being a sensei to each temple, guiding his students with a firm hand and watching his most promising students carefully, ensuring that they do not enter harm’s way until they are ready.
Sensei Yu is a great model for repositioning his crew and scoring objectives. His “Airburst” action allows him to push a target (friendly or enemy) up to 5”, which can provide some great movement for his crew. He combines a Wk of 7 with the ability to lower his Focused Condition in order to Interact for free, which makes him an excellent objective grabber. He has decent melee (although he may not Charge, which is his only downside), and he may even take some of the friendly Leader’s Actions! He works particularly well with Shenlong but he is one of the stronger choices for any Ten Thunders list.
