    Help Me!!

Ok, I've been going through a bit of a Sci-fi stage mini-wise....Especially since I've been watching Firefly, the Chronicles Riddick, and other cool Sci-fi movies.

Thing is, until recently, I've never given Sci-fi minis more than a casual glance. Now, with Infinity, Urban War, Heresy, Wyrd, and even VOR, its like I am seeing many of these figs for the very first time, and sometimes I am.

Anyhow, it has really gotten me excited about minis again...even more so than I was before.

BUT, I want a 'spaceship' model to go with some of these. I have pounded GOOGLE, looking for some cool sci-fi ships. Not much has turned up in the mini scale I prefer (I want the ships to fit the minis)....I looked into scratch building, while it looks interesting, I'm not sure I could pull it off.

So, I decided to check out FORGEWORLD. I have some Forgeworld stuff already (several buildings, the War Mammoth, the Blood Deamon) but everything has always been Fantasy oriented. Now, I'm looking more intently at the SCI-FI ships they have....and I am starting to think about them. Once I start thinking about them, I will try and justify buying some....

I don't think GW is evil, but paying $160 for a spaceship is goofy...PLEASE talk me out of this, point to some alternatives, anything....Help, I am slipping fast, and my paypal account (and possibly my wife) will hate me....

Honestly the best I've seen are actually toy replicas of things like teh B5 or Star Trek ships.

    No Jim! NO!

Build yourself some corridors, w/ walls, floorplans, ducts, airshafts, grates, connecting tunnels, those cool automatic gun thingys that shoot everything to hell by remote, slimy melty spots, etc...

Do this on the cheap from hardware stores, Home Depot, Salvation Army for old electronics, your recycle box, etc.

Use completed corridors for Space Hulk, ship-to-ship boarding actions, whatever.
The do-it yourselfness of the project will not only keep you from thinking about Forgeworld, you'll end up w/ tons of usable terrain and stuff for a fraction of the cost.

Snap out of it, Jim! $160 is insane! Build your own! It might not look as good as the Forgeworld one, but it will cost a hell lot less than $160 and you will learn a lot about scratchbuilding stuff, and maybe it will get you hooked on that instead.

EDIT: And, maybe you could start painting that Forgeworld stuff you already got! ;) :tongue2:

Why not try looking up some printable ships? Those can easily be found on the internet and downloaded. However, I don't mean that you should print them and assemble them, rather use the design to make your own scratchbuilt and sturdy version.

Do you have an idea of what kind of ship you are looking for? I.E. human, alien, ... I might have other ideas depending on what you're after.

ah..the darkness is passing....thank you, thank you....

The scratchbuilding does look very interesting and fun. I checked out the PRINTABLE ones. 'Worldworks' stuff is great, and could be used as a great basis for building more.

You folks may have saved my pocketbook, and possibly my marriage.....I must stay away from Forgeworld...

@anders...paint the stuff I already have! What a novel concept! LOL

You're saying you want ships that fit in scale with 28mm minis? Even vehicles they make for the games don't actually seem to be in scale (try fitting a SM inside a tank).

I think scratch-built is the way to go, but I'm not sure why you'd want to.
Oh, I'm going to do a tutorial on a super cheap vehicle. Not a space ship, but flying and CHEAP.

Anyway, I think you should make a 28mm scale replica of the Mining Ship Red Dwarf. That way, when your wife kicks you out of the house, you'll have some place to stay.

    Paper Firefly

Pretty cool Firefly model. Pretty detailed too. Not sure if I would tackle it.
