Leadstorm, gunfighter, and melee
Hello,
Below are the stats for Leadstorm
(2) Leadstorm
(CC: 14/Rst: Df /Rg:
6) Dg 4.
Since the Archanist Gunsmith has this spell as well as gunfighter, can s/he use Leadstorm while engaged in melee despite the
icon?
Thanks

No. Gunfighter only lets you make Melee Strikes with the designated weapon. In this case the Custom Pistol.

So, do you take a negative flip if there are some targets in cover?

The way I've always interpreted this spell is that you cast the spell, which you can only do if you're not engaged with anyone in melee, and the total of the spells is resisted by everyone (friend and foe alike!) within 6" against their Df stat.
As for cover penalties, I'm fairly certain they do not apply in this case because the actual spell's effect is a pulse and not a single ranged attack. The ranged icon is there to enforce the "not engaged in melee" requirement. Everyone is resisting the pulse's effect with Df and not resisting a ranged strike.

I'd think that the gun icon would also imply that models affected by the spell can benefit from Bulletproof.

the pistol symbol means that you cant cast this spell in melee and the only things that help vs damage are armour and imunites to pulses
if i knew wot i was doin.......i'd be dangerous

Since it's a spell Magic Resistance would help vs damage as well.
And bulletproof gives armor vs ranged attacks (not just ranged strikes, so ranged spells would also qualify)
And according to the Rules Manual p.18 all attacks with the gun icon are ranged attacks.
