Well, as a video game designer looking for work, I applied. As for the cover letter debate. I always include my cover letter in the body of the e-mail, if they don't want one they don't have to read it. I attach the rest of my materials to the e-mail and in my case, I zip them because it can be a lot of large files and I wouldn't want it to get bounced by the mail daemon. lol
