    IP 7 round 2 ITIC entries

    Here you go folks. I was too pressed for time to get this out to you with the other votes. However, you all clearly put a lot of effort into these entries and they deserve a ballot as much as the competing entries.

    IP 7 Round 2 ITIC

    TE = Theme Element
    TQ = Technical Quality
    OA = Overall Aesthetic

    As per my usual judging I will be looking at these and comparing them to what I consider perfect. Feel free to PM me for explanations and the like. (I know a few folks were rather upset about some comments <cough peterdita cough darklord cough>)

    Also, I am really still drawing a blank on this Cold Blooded theme. Sorry.

    Theme Element: I assume that the Forsaken are cold blooded. Plus placing the model outside in real snow is great! Good choice there.

    Technical Quality: As a few others have stated, thinning your paints and applying multiple layers will give you much smoother results. Another thing you can do with this is tint each application to begin the shading process. I like the base work. It sets up the piece well. It is too bad that the white of the base is so rough however. Also, painting the sand would be a good idea. Unpainted sand looks very much out of scale with a 32mm figure. There is room for improvement here but it is a very nice beginning.

    Overall Aesthetic: Definite bonus points for photographing the piece outside in the snow. You also picked a spot with some nice moss cover that looks very much like grass should in scale. This is a great way to “Cheat” a scene. Of course, choosing the proper place to take the shot is very important. You did very well with this. You color choice for the figure is well done. There is a definite contrast between the base and the figure which helps. Having a few locations of visual focus would be good however. Some splash of another color to add visual interest would be a good addition

    OA = 9.5

    Theme Element: I think this is likely the best representation of the theme. The idea that Myranda is forced to watch her “pet” being brutalized before her eyes is great! Also, the fact that she has been pummeled so violently is very cool. Well done.

    TQ = Not much to say here. If anything the icicle on the lower right in the first pic is a bit funny looking. But it could be that it broke off. Also, the base cutting through the piece the way it does is not my personal favorite. However it’s a personal preference. Not something to knock about how well the piece looks.

    Overall Aesthetic: This is really exemplary work Rob. If anything I think the pose of the snake could have received a bit of help. It looks a bit dumpy in a few places. Not like a sinewy creature of rapid death. I love the contrast and focus of the spilled blood. Also how much of a contrast there is between Raspiutina and the Golem’s look when compared to Myranda and the Snake. Excellent color choice here. It’s a real shame about the camera. This would have done really well.

    Another good application of the theme I think. However, as I still have so much trouble identifying with this it’s hard to say. The idea that the insular Space Marines were betrayed by one of their own is a pretty good choice though.

    Technical Quality: A major detractor here is the remaining mold lines. The standing Spacewolf has mold lines still on his chainsword arm. Also, the base would have benefited from some extra color work. It could have been muted so as to not draw attention away from the focus of the pieces. The buttons especially would have been nice to see a bit of a color change.

    Overall Aesthetic: The piece is set up with a clear focus and tells a compelling story. Nicely done there. The relatively monochrome background, while it sets up the pieces nicely, looks out of place with just the one color choice. I like the placement of the reds to help draw the eye around the piece. Be sure to pay attention to your mold lines and put a bit more effort into your base coloring and you will do much better.

    TE = 3
    TQ = 4.5
    OA = 9

    Theme Element: I suppose that Epic Thagrosh would be cold blooded. Again, (Still a broken record) I’m not really certain of this theme.

    Technical Quality: Very nicely done. There is a bit of red on his right arm that is left over from the painting of the gems. Also, the base is very messy. Don’t be afraid to sand off the flock and ballast and reapply some paint on primer for the base before you paint the black. Other then that it is an excellently executed piece. I do think that you should apply paint to the clump foliage. A stain of dark brown followed by some progressive green highlights will give you a much more realistic look. I do prefer flock to be painted in general but you have done a really good blend with out applying paint.

    Overall Aesthetic: Very dynamic pose. I like the rock work a lot and the red highlights on the piece serve as a great way to shift focus around the piece. The base compliments the pose of the figure very well. Also, the figure is clearly focusing forward. Well done there. The major detractors are the base problems and a bit of messy clean up here and there. Very nicely done.
