Ding ding!

The first round of vaunted Season 7 is now on the books, and Iron Painters do NOT get a reprieve.

They have to continue, through the snow, family, holidays, and painters block.

First let me say thank you to all the newcomers in Round 1. Some fantastic showings out there! Sorry so many of you have to sit on the sidelines for round 2. Check out the I THINK I CAN category, where you can still play along, improving your skills and possibly winning some booty!

But right to it, Paint fans:

@Peterdita . let me know your address so i can send you your xmas pressie: its called 'how to paint citadel miniatures' may be a bit advanced for you but give it a try.
You have an advantage in that im away until monday then hospital tuesday. I have an advantage in the fact I can paint. Maybe i'll do a t-rex eating your choo-choo.

Ooh! Jens.... a tough one. Most impressed by your first round entry... having said that, I expect to sweep you to one side like so many before you ;) :D

Good matchups!

Haha! nice one. That would actually be totally awesome: a T-rex eating that train, if you want it its yours but I get pics. It's just sitting on my shelf collecting dust and getting in the way. Kinda like your testicles. (ouch!)
But last I heard you weren't good enough to paint citadel models either or the eavy metal folks woulda called you back!
Plus, you can keep the magazine, I would never take away your favorite spank off mag :P (man! I'm rather iron dickhead today huh? you know I love you DL)

ooh nasty, nasty BOY!

Just had a look through my stuff I never order for this always use what I have - didnt have anything concrete theme wise but just found a mini thats perfect, and I can set it up into a bigger scene or leave as is. Bigger scene would almost certainly make it my best ever entry. and even better no comedy whatsoever in this! Pete - you have been warned!
I am so excited about the prospect of this one

Peterdita

I can't think of crap for this but then something came to me... I'd have to sculpt it and I've nver done that before, seems to get bonus points (that I'll need). Since all the judges are American, I think they'd get the reference but just not sure its a 'winner' Hmmmmm....

wouldnt worry mate - none of your ideas will be

Jens
12-18-2009, 02:03 PM
Can I get a new one .. a real opponent? :boring: Not that there are any left. Maybe we could arrange a 2 on 1 - that would sound almost fair. To make it a bit more exciting I could restrict myself painting only at midnight by the moonlight with my left foot.

In all dishonesty: Beelzebrush's entry of round 1 was among my very favourite ones - it might have helped that I'm a huge fan of anything related to the discworld novels. Looking forward to round 2.

I have a few ideas, but nothing that punches the others in the kidneys and says, "THIS IS THE ONE."

Are Tyranids cold-blooded?

Wow, gotta say I'm not feeling iron at all! I'm up against last round's top scorer, who's knocked me out before. And up against the phone ringing for people wanting to do stuff (bah, humbug) and getting the house ready for parents descending upon it in the New Year. Kinda makes me wish random.org had done this to me last round! ;->

Nonetheless I shall start the idea wheels turning and see what I can come up with. I'm not going down without a fight dh!

Well, I don't own any dragons. Except for that gigantic Rackham resin one. I could probably paint it in two weeks, but it'd still be a rush job.

I sort of have an idea, I just can't really come up with a good reptillian figure for one of the models. I could probably do without, and just try and emphasize the "cold blooded nature" of the guy, but theme is so freakin' subjective in judging, it's better to try and hit as many notes as you can.

I can work with the week I have available after Christmas. But this theme.... Jesus Vike, I may jump on the band wagon and do a tribute piece to you with this theme. (smack talk the host?!)

Hm. I do have one idea that I really like (going off on a tangent from Darklord's ex-wife idea) but it's a little on the disturbing side. Hmmmm.

[note: it does not involve any symbolic violence towards my ex-wife. It's much more Stepford-Wifey in nature. In this one, the wife gets the last (albeit gruesome) laugh.]

Hmm, I've got some thoughts for an ITIC entry, we'll have to see if they go anywhere. Yeah, I know, not really Iron...

Well, I'm not too shy about bemoaning my shocking luck... but check this out:-

So, I was really excited about Space Hulk earlier in the year, got fed up with never being left alone for more than five minutes, seven days a week, to paint anything, and stopped checking the minis forums; when I'm hungry and skint, I don't check out pictures of food....

So, I popped into GW to get a goblin regiment for my first IP idea, but obviously they didn't have one... but in the course of the conversation, I mentioned about how gutted I was to have completely missed Space Hulk - the Most Excellent of All Dudes promised he'd get me one!

Picked it up today... needless to say, my years-long hatred of GW has just taken a pretty serious knock!...;)

So yeah, obviously, my committment to paint something for a competition (even if it is only ITIC) has never tended to amount to much more than half a (small) bean, with the juice licked off, but I'll have a go at painting one of the slinky and sinuous genestealers for ITIC... and I mean painting f*cking well... I [I]am a good painter - honest!;)

PS When ITIC entries get an order of magnitude fewer views and comments than the same mini in the general showcase gallery, it's a bit cack....

I'll consider it based on what the important folks (you guys) think, and I promise no more 'creepy hitting on girls' voices!

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards giving a little extra time. (Maybe not a whole week, but at least two or three days.) Most orders won't ship until at least Monday, and if they don't arrive by Wednesday (which, even without the increased volume of packages going through the mail right now, would be no small feat) they're not arriving until the following Monday or Tuesday. Which means a lot of people are only getting five or six days to paint.

Hm.

Bren
12-19-2009, 04:11 AM
I don't need extra time I think, I just hope I can hold a model properly some time this week since a patient (a little dog who didn't want me to look in his eyes) bit me in my left index finger a few days ago. I'm glad I'm right-handed so it's not my brush holding hand but still...

But on the bright side: I do have an idea and I own the model already, so don't consider yourself lucky Commander Y!!! I'm going to win again this year!

It's not "more time" if you've ordered stuff. Deliveries are going to take a day or three extra, and nobody delivers on Xmas

PS Bexley: you asked if tyranids were cold-blooded.

It's been a while since I devoured every piece of information that GW put out, but I remember that one of the first things that an invasion fleet does is raise the temperature of the planet to tropical levels, prior to the mass-invasion proper, which suggests that they might be.

Then you've got them being able to ambush Termies, with all their spangly auspexes etc, so, again, one can but infer....

But one thing I'm completely sure of: them bad boys are absolutely chock-full of 'ichor'!;)

MVM
12-19-2009, 01:18 PM

I think I'm settled on my idea, and my figures. There's another I could order away for that might fit the fluff better, but I think the one I already have in hand fits the theme better. But I certainly don't object to adding some time on for shipping for those who don't keep a ton of figures around and need to send away for some if that's the way the tide runs. Given Christmas committments, it wouldn't be adding much extra time on to what I have available.

I'm perfectly happy with an extention if the majority want that though, although that's not something I need tbh..

My entry is coming on nicely, done some sculpting and construction, the sculpts look a lot better with more time spent on getting them right, haha.

so my opponent has some support .......I see how it is .......

I'm happy doing what I want to do without an extension but I am sitting on a fair pile of stuff so can understand if people aren't able to fully realise what they want to do due to not being able to order the exact right piece in their mind thanks to xmas...

two points though......

first ..... If a decision is to be made for an extension then please do it before Tuesday as I am going to be nearly killing myself to cram as much in before I go on hols as is humanly possible and knowing I have a day or two extra will ease that a little....

second if I do get a little extra time on my piece it will clean up the high scores.......:vb_devil:

I placed in order, but I'm not too worried about it. I previously painted one of the figures I ordered, so I can use that for positioning and such until the new one arrives. The other figure's positioning isn't quite as important, though it will still involve a lot of conversion. But I also have a ton (like, more than my Psycho and Full Metal Jacket entries combined) of scratchbuilding to do, which will keep me plenty busy until the figures get here, so it's not like the time is being wasted.

For the record- in the spirit of holiday cheer I have no problem with an extension for those who do not have a local gaming store with a great selection. I often take for granted how easy it is for me to just run down and pick things up. If my local store were to close - I do not believe there is another store with a comperable selection for over 120 miles.

So if my local store had closed a week ago I'd be pretty hosed now considering we're snowed in and shipping would be highly delayed for the holiday. I think there is a fair argument here for an extension.

I'm good with or without the extension. An Iron Painter is born under pressure, yes, but if too many folks can't spend their cash and get orders for their entry, it's no fun. Nobody wants to be beat down because of the Post. Then again, everyone is in the same boat, and should deal with the dealine in their own way. Some of us don't order mkinis, some cut back their idea, some cut corners...it's all Iron Painter either way.

My inability to paint has little to do with my ability to judge a piece.

You are just miffed because it forces you to pay more attention to your bases then you would like. I do believe that that item has more to do with me being a judge then anything else. It forces you painterly lot to actually pay attention to the entire presentation as opposed to just the pigments on the metal bits.

All to the good. Moa and Bexly can't be the only ones who actually pay attention to what a figure stands on.

I can usually see if someone pushed the base angle for pushing the base angle's sake. What I look for is the composition of the entire piece. As such, base appropriately. A good base can be just the standard 30mm (Or what ever size is appropriate) base size if it makes a good composition. You won't lose points with me because of that.

To take CY's example, if a black nondescript plinth is appropriate to the composition of the piece you will get full marks. It just bugs me when people spend a huge amount of effort on the painting of the figure and mount it on something that was clearly cobbled together. It basically amounts to painting a masterpiece and framing it in unfinished 2x4 wood studs. The frame is part of the piece. The base is the frame for your piece.

12-22-2009, 02:01 PM
I just want to note on the record that I don't _mean_ for a lot of my bases to suck, and I have often taken more time over them than it would look. I know I'm basing-challenged and I've been working for the past couple of years to address that. Just not with any notable success! ;->

Nice work, though I think it might be like my "Qwest for Feier" entry- I had to google the subject, as I'd never heard of them before. (One of my earlier ideas was Leopold & Loeb, but I figured it was likely too obscure, and my past experience is that if you have to explain it too much, people tend to say it doesn't fit the theme, no matter how well it actually does.)

MVM
12-24-2009, 01:44 AM
I think that anyone working with a more obscure thematic element have more of an onus to make sure that their piece tells the story on its own.

Yep, I do indeed lack iron at the moment. I've lost several days to holiday prep and festivities, and one day to a meltdown dealing with some family issues. Today was meant to have some time for IP stuff in it, then a friend who only visits once a year called yesterday asking to come play games all day. So far I have only put 3 hours into my entry, and that's not anywhere close to finishing prep. But it's hubby's holiday, too, so I can't just blow everything off. (I do that the rest of the year! ;->)

Tomorrow should see me back on the case, and I've always considered New Year's a pretty artificial holiday, so I'll probably skip the plans for the and work on IP if I have to.

Oops, I did just mean that as my opinion, I don't have a problem with people celebrating New Years! My favourites have been the ones where I did something a little different (party in a bowling alley, going to see the play Dracula are two that stand out), but now that I'm all old and not much for partying, I'm fine just staying home and watching a movie. Or working on IP. ;->

Some friends do have plans for a gaming day on New Years Day, but we had a gaming Christmas party and several friends over to play games over the holidays, so I'm not going to feel guilty if I decide to take that day to work on stuff. I'm almost to the point of being gamed out!

Hope you have fun with entertaining your masses, it sounds like a good time!

You're kidding - someone else thought of using Rasputina? I suppose you're going to tell me that someone else thought of doing something reptilian too?

Yeah, sorry to break it to you... brace yourself: there might be some assassins and Everblight too....;)

I'm about half way finished with my ITIC entry. It's not as motivating to not have an opponent. :( So I'll just try to beat everyone :)

Yeppers - 'tis true... I found that in round one....:(

Bet I'll get a higher score than you though (we can be unofficially paired if you like - it'll help...).:)

PS Mephistopheles: that was a slick piece of work of yours in round 1 - that didn't win?!

Ummm... nice icy effects... I'll still take you on though, if you want....

I'm just going for a single painted mini, painted well but in a style I really like, that the judges might not (though it's heavily influenced by one of them [though he's made no commitment to judge the ITICs, currently], who happens to be in my top four favourite minis painters...).

We'll see... [psst, it's an assassin, hehe...].

It's on then! LOL I am sticking to a single fig this time as well ... I'm working on a commission and I'm trying to give it as much attention as I can and still do a few things for myself.

I needed some extra motivation to meet the deadline and crushing an opponent will do the trick nicely. Prepare to revel in the defeat of the contest you already lost!

As to my last entry ... Jens beat me out by a point. I have to give him the nod though, his technique was cleaner and overall better then mine. I blame my camera and lack of a light box though.

Pete's back in Portland!!! A day later than planned but they flew me first class to make up for it. And thank god because I'm not sure I've ever been that hungover in public before... <shudder>

I've consumed more booze and more food in the past week to last me through Christmas 2020... My cat is $$$$$$$$ed off that I left her, I lost two of my salt water fish!...WTF? The bank account is empty and I haven't even started my IP yet.

I finally locked down an idea and can start tonight after work. I'll be sculpting 50% of it so all children nearby should put on the 'earmuffs' to protect them from the plethera of cursing that will project from my apartment over the next couple days.

Luckily we start the year with a day off (love America!) and I should be able to do this up real proper like and give ol' Darkwhore a run for his money...

Off to go fiddle with my spreadsheets and see what disasters I'm looking at for the new year transition. Fun fun fun!

I'm looking forward to Pete's entry of fecal matter.

@Jess, no worries on the 15mm. Remember that I have a huge amount of experience with the scale. It is hard to get great detail but it can be done. (Assuming that you actually spend more then about 30 minutes painting like I did. Totally lost motivation.)

@Darklord, the US imports a lot of great beers. Had a wonderful Lambic last night with the family. I like the Belgium and German brewing process over the English ones. Odd since my heritage is almost all English... Must be the cross culture contamination over the past 13 generations spending time here in the worlds melting pot. You likely need to get out more. Take a dip in a few other cultures. Would do you a world of good.

I've still never really shown what I can do with a mini and brush, but I think I've demonstrated my skills as a punchbag pretty adequately....;)

By the way, my comment about your not winning was more a 'wow, IP can sure be harsh' than a swipe at your opponent and his/her entry (I didn't actually know who it was...) - I'll be saving all my swipes for you, now we've got the pleasantries over!;)

Made the mistake of getting the new Infinity rulebook on the way back yesterday... been through three boxes of tissues... to catch the drool... obviously... cough....

At least I'm finished all the prep I can do prior to painting, there's still some groundwork assembly and finishing to go. Epic sculpting fail! NO way I'll get that finished in time. I started sculpting the cute little Malifaux grinch on a warpig, thought he was pretty cold blooded. But I only made it through the armature and the legs. Did I mention how much I hate green stuff? I have learned to ise a lot of water on my tools though, so I learned something. Legs look alright just no way I'd get that crazy santa suit done in time :(

Pete, sorry about the sculpting. I guess you know this already, but if you don't, a drop of washing up liquid in the water works wonders as additional lubricant (but too much makes the GS go weird). Hope you keep at it, when you've got more time - it can be extremely rewarding!:)

Oh, and now the song running through my head, liberally changed to fit my theme (With apologies to Paula Abdul and the song writer)

She's a cold-blooded snake

I'm still in the game, but still lots to do. Got the painting finished, and the gluing and assembly of the basic base stuff, which also got painted. I also added the scented candle and iron parts. Accents are definitely needed, however, and 2-3 effects type stuff that will take time to set. Hopefully I'll manage it tomorrow!

I do wish I had a bit more time so I could maximize the scenery. I'm not sure I'll be able to touch it up or improve it much once it's all done. I still give dh the edge in our contest, but if I can get all I want to done tomorrow, I'll have given it as good a go as I can in the time!

I too have to figure out a way around pouring resin late tomorrow. I wanted a sink with sudsy water- I think I might fill it with resin, then put a tiny piece of saran wrap over it so that I can do the suds on top of that.

I'll comment on the other entries later or tomorrow I think (seeing as work looks out of the question due to the sodding snow and ice... grrr!)

Good luck Jens!

I'm out by way of technical knockout...

Frustrating to say the least been away for bit and then stayed away from the net to get my piece finished and it is sat here on my desk and IMHO my best ever IP piece.(one f my best ever pieces period). unfortunately the missus neglected to inform me until an hour and half ago that my brother was round this mornig and she lent him my camera .... had a ring round for the last hour withno joy of finding an alternative and my brother has been on the beer so can't run it across so barring a miracle before twelve then I hand this one to you Wren pm me your address ...
some gat entries in there folks good luck....

will put my piece up in ITIC when I get the camra back..
