Proxy clause:

Addendum 1: Following the flavor and order of operations established for game setup in the book, instead of bringing ONE list that you're locked into for the day, you will now only declare your faction of the day at the onset of the tournament. Once you have your pairing established for your next game, you will be given a single strategy for both players. Then you will be given approximately TEN minutes to [secretly] build an appropriate list to best handle the scenario. Your crew may be completely different from game to game.
Addendum 2: Painting contest: after much deliberation and thought with the locals and some online friends, I'll ask that each entry in the painting contest must be entered by the painter himself. In the future, I may give awards based on "hobby enthusiast" that may open the possibility of awards for paintwork not done by the entrant, but this is intended as a reward for players also learning the art of the brush.
Addendum 3: Strategies Announced (both players play the same Strategy):
Game 1: Claim Jump
Game 2: There Must Have Been Some Magic in That Old Silk Hat They Found
* place a 30 mm Snowman token in the center of the board.
During deployment each player declares one of his models to be carrying a Magic Silk Hat. Any model carrying a Silk Hat also gains the following abilitites:
(1) Build Snowman: if no snowman is currently in play, this model may create one at the center point of the board.
(0) When they Placed it on His Head: interact with Snowman Token. Summon the Snowman. The Snowman token gains the following stats and becomes friendly to the player placing the hat.
Wk/Ch: 4/6, Ht: 2, Wp: 5, Ca: 5, Df: 3, Wd: 5
Snowy Fist: Rg: 1melee, Cb: 4, Dg: 1/2/4
Victory Conditions: Score 4 VP if the Snowman is in the controlling player's deployment zone at the end of the game.
Score 2 VP if you control a Snowman but it is not in your deployment zone at the end of the game.
Snowman FAQ: When a Snowman is killed it drops its hat. Place a Silk Hat token where the Snowman was. A model may pick up the hat for a (0) action, but only a model friendly to the original hat bearer. In other words, each crew has a hat and only they can pick up their hat - not their enemy.
Game 3: Assassinate (with mandated unique Event: Snowball Fight [see below])
Game 4 (if neccessary): Slaughter
Addendum 4:
Each Location will have a replaced Special Event/Special Feature table unique to the Rise of December:
Black Joker: Thick Snow (same as "Rubble" pg. 98) but, this is an event rather than Special Terrain (so it gets flipped for every turn and only lasts for then next turn)
1-2: White-out! (see below!)
3-4: Heavy Snows (pg. 99)
5-7: On Thin Ice! (see below!)
8-9: Snowball Fight! (see below!)
10-11: An Open Fire... (same as "Campsite" pg. 98)
12-13: Cruel Winds (pg. 99)
Red Joker: Thick Snow (same as "Rubble" pg. 98) but, this is an event rather than Special Terrain (so it gets flipped for every turn and only lasts for then next turn)
White-out!
During the next turn, any portion of the table without a covering terrain piece counts as covering terrain, and models cannot draw LoS further than 3".
Snowball Fight!
During the next turn, no opposed duel may be initiated by any model other than "Throw Snowball."
Every model loses its basic weapons for the turn but gains the following:
Throw Snowball
Rg: :ranged6
Cb: 5
Dg: 0/0/1
Throw Snowball may be used in melee. During a Snowball Fight, all models may ignore harmless and any ability requiring a Wp check to target an opposing model (Even that tart Pandora can be hit with a snowball!).
A player gains +1 VP whenever one of their models inflicts damage upon an opposing model with a Throw Snowball strike.
On Thin Ice!
For the duration of the game, any portion of the table without a terrain piece counts as hazardous terrain. Each model receives Slow as they slip and fall on their ass. Models may perform a Df -> 11 duel at the beginning of their activation to ignore the hazardous condition until the end of the turn. Rules of standard unopposed duels apply.

So, what master is people planning on taking? Is there gona be a fully painted army award? Cuz...me and my commission buddy will be ;)
Oh, and if something was commissioned, can the owner enter it as a best painted contestant?

Is there gona be a fully painted army award?
Oh, and if something was commissioned, can the owner enter it as a best painted contestant?
First question: currently, I doubt it. Planning on single model (as specified in the first post, but there's a lot to read up there). However, as we get closer, if there's a batch of people committed to the event I may open a revised "fully painted army" or have two separate painting awards.
Second question: this one's tougher. On the one hand, I want to reward the gamer that's also so committed he'll cover each aspect of the hobby. That's a real champion. On the other hand, as an artist, myself, I recognize the interest a player has in gettting a fully painted army out on the table to represent the game better than he, himself, might and the commissioned work does still promote the game, shows interest in painted work, and even though it's not the work of the player, it does represent money as investment rather than time and skill. Additionally, this awards raw talent, too, and some players have great drive to paint well and really want to, but never will be good. Finally, I'd like to say "I'm rewarding the player that can paint, too" but the reality is that if a person commissioned a piece from some far away painter in a far away land, how would I know unless he made it public knowledge? I'll continue to take comments and advice on this topic.

This is always a rough decision to make. But I prefer to not have the person with the biggest pocketbook 'buy' the award. If you catch my drift.
But that's just me. ;)

RISE of December?! That beast will eat your face!

11-04-2009, 04:57 PM
Well, the reason I ask is that I do alot of commission work for another attendee, and believe me it's not the biggest pocket book as a matter, I do some amazing speed painting for the quality I put out, so I charge what the model cost ($35 to paint a box set for a friend, not alot to ask) and have turned out 2 boxes +3 blisters of Arcanists in under a week, actually roughly 3 days worth of work (few hours a day.)
I think, we have it planned that if he wins anything, he will not claim it as his own and pick me up something worth half the prize from his own pocket. But that's just what we were discussing. Really tho, I don't expect to win any awards, but it was a thought we were both having that is a toughy to keep fair in all regards.
WEiRD sKeTCH
11-04-2009, 05:30 PM
I understand that.
It's also possible that someone could have a Commander Y comissioned paint job on a model (he ain't cheap) and win the best painted contest. I just feel it sets a bad precedent is all. Award effort before anything else. But that's a hard thing to judge though... :club:

Well....not really like the big guy is going to climb out of a snowdrift and start eating everyone. More like he's stretching a little bit and bringing some wintry badassery down on the invaders.
You know...stirrings and stuff.
That's why one of the new scenarios will be "There Must Have Been Some Magic in that Old Silk Hat".
And an alternative event will be Snowball Fight.

Proxy clause:
Models not yet released to the public my be played if a suitable alternative "proxy" model is available and meets the following requirements:
1. it must be on a legal 30, 40, 50 mm base as appropriate per the model's specifications.
2. It should represent the model for which it's pretending to be as accurately as possible (i.e., your GW Ork might be on a 30 mm base, but it won't pass as a Viktoria but it might pass for one of the gremlins).
3. You must bring your use of proxied models to your opponent's attention prior to deployment. Failure to do so wll mean I'll have to do something about it. :eviltongu
4. If you're afraid that your single Steampunk Arachnid doesn't look like a Steampunk Abomination, run it by me. I'll have the final say in a proxy's legality.
You may want to add a clause to stop this broken Som'er Teeth Jones, Mosquito Totem combo I am hearing about where you get to draw your whole deck and get right next to any model for death.

As a recent "victim" of the draw the complete deck into hand with a 4 mosquito, 2 Hog Whisperer, Warpig 25SS list, I must say this was rather disheartening, even when I ran a mostly construct list with Rasputina.
Turn 1, during all my activations, he just kept sacraficing one mosquito to another generating cards until all my activations were over, then proceeded to draw his entire deck. Then using the mosquitos to basically pull themselves across the board (using the combination of Summon and the fact that an All action can still be done if you are slowed), "moved" his 4 mosquitos across the board, then "moved" them right next to Rasputina, then had one attack with a red-joker, to which rasputina flipped, cheated and soulstoned to stay alive. Have a second mosquito repeat with a 13 and rasputina doing the same. Then using the other two sacraficed them away and moved, them back to the otherside of the board. Round 2 and 3 were the same until Rasputina died, having run out of soulstones.
So we meta-gamed a bit more and my only solution to this is to run with an all construct list, but even then with a Warpig with a stacked deck (by discarding all but the best, and spending the first portion of the turn drawing up the deck) he can kill most anything. If he can play the discard pile as only three cards (red joker and two 13's) card there is a 2/3 chance the attack is a 13, a 50/50 chance of the damage being red joker, and if so a warpig can do 12 points of damage in a single hit.
So I do hope there is a fix for this card draw engine, as it does make for very long and one sided battle.

@Grotto: I don't know if the Wyrd decision will be made regarding the endless recursion in time for the event, but I don't think anyone intended on an endless recursion. I'll have an answer in place regardless to keep it under control, even though I think it's more a neat trick than broken auto-win.

Pam (the LGS owner) is also very excited. She says we'll have the room we need to accomodate some good play.
Also, she alluded to the thought that we might have even MORE prize support for the event. Enough to make it really appealing.
Also, my call on this one: you guys willing to drive from Chi-town: there's no reason we need you to pay the small $5 buy-in entry. I'll be absorbing your entry fee! I've made one major change to the event.
See the end of the first post for addendums to the rules.
Here is the change:
Addendum 1: Following the flavor and order of operations established for game setup in the book, instead of bringing ONE list that you're locked into for the day, you will now only declare your faction of the day at the onset of the tournament. Once you have your pairing established for your next game, you will be given a single strategy for both players. Then you will be given approximately TEN minutes to [secretly] build an appropriate list to best handle the scenario. Your crew may be completely different from game to game.

I've created the following unique scenario which will run for the second round game. Look it over for any glaring errors or issues needing clarification. Build your army appropriately.
There Must Have Been Some Magic in That Old Silk Hat They Found
* place a 30 mm Snowman token in the center of the board.

Hopefully this'll be the end of the big announcements.
I've got all the strategies in place ahead of time, including the unique strategy. Additionally, here's the replaced special events that affect every board and location throughout the day.
The intent is to provide the information ahead of time to give you an opportunity to plan your army composition accordingly as well as keep the event moving quickly and fluidly on the 12th.
These are subject to change as necessary, so keep that in mind before the event (I'll try to post any changes as they happen, as quickly as possible).

Victory Conditions: Score 4 VP if the Snowman is in the controlling player's deployment zone at the end of the game.
Score 2 VP if you control a Snowman but it is not in your deployment zone at the end of the game.
Game 3: Assassinate (with mandated unique Event: Snowball Fight [see below])
Game 4 (if neccessary): Slaughter
Addendum 4:
Each Location will have a replaced Special Event/Special Feature table unique to the Rise of December:
Black Joker: Flip two more cards
1-2: White-out! (see below!)
3-4: Heavy Snows (pg. 99)
5-7: Thick Snow (same as "Rubble" pg. 98)
8-9: Snowball Fight! (see below!)
10-11: An Open Fire... (same as "Campsite" pg. 98)
12-13: Cruel Winds (pg. 99)
Red Joker: On Thin Ice! (see below!)
During a Snowball Fight, all models may ignore harmless and any ability requiring a Wp check to target an opposing model.
A player gains +1 VP whenever one of their models inflicts damage upon an opposing model with a Throw Snowball strike.
On Thin Ice!
For the duration of the game, any portion of the table without a terrain piece counts as hazardous terrain (damage=2). Models may perform a Df -> 12 duel to ignore the hazardous condition.

Excellent, Godspeed.
Here's another idea that I'd like some input on.
A lot of the locals have been complaining about certain schemes that are "auto-includes" such as Holdout.
Since every army has one faction specific scheme and five universal schemes, what do you all think of imposing a rule like this: "No scheme may be selected and used in consecutive games"
It would mean at least four schemes and they couldn't be used in back to back games.
On the other, maybe it's not worth caring about despite the discrepency.
Thoughts?
maverickman5
12-02-2009, 12:01 AM
Just go all out: No Schemes may be repeated until Round 4.
Omenbringer
12-02-2009, 12:33 PM
I dont think the schemes should be restricted. Even announced they are only worth two points. Not to mention its not just the schemes that can be unbalanced, some of the strategies can be easier or harder depending on Crew selection or faction choice.
In the end it is all part of the game.
Godspeed
12-02-2009, 02:54 PM
I agree. Tho, after getting a feel for my army, my Res. scheme doesn't seem so awful.
nerdelemental
12-02-2009, 03:00 PM
Agreed! No rule regarding schemes! Play the game.
That being said, all of the strategies are announced at the end of the first post so armies can be built accordingly ahead of time if you wish, or at least a general concept of one.
I've made minor tweaks (to On Thin Ice, for example) and some rules additions and clarification (to The Silk Hat unique strategy).
As I receive questions or discover problems I hadn't thought about I'll bring it to your attention. Hopefully all the big stuff is out there for the public to digest before the event and we'll roll pretty fluidly the day of.

For those keeping track at home, I made a slight change to the Special Events/Special Terrain in the first post. Moved some around and changed the Heavy Snows from a game-long Special Terrain to the more managable Special Event that occurs only on flips of 11+ (or is that a 10+? I don't have my book with me and can't remember...)
I'm making new terrain like a madman and even have my six year old helping me make some snowman models. :)
The game boards should look pretty good, I hope.

Godspeed, that's an important FAQ kind of question.
NO, it's just the Special Event I'm dictating for that game. You and your opponent still flip for it round by round. Some games might never see a snowball fight. Some might see it the majority of their rounds!
Probably good to get the fight as you can potentially rack up a ton of extra VP if you're willing to pitch solid cards on a good iceball to the face.

Bring him and anyone else that'd like to play - I think that anyone that shows up that wants to play will get a spot. Pam's pretty committed to this event - the prize support should indicate that! She says she'll bump the regular weekend Yu-Gi-Ugh tournament altogether if we need their space.
Solid.

You should organize a terrain day on a saturday, or do a terrain night some Tuesday. It helps to have extra hands and pre-set stations to assembly line. All terrain made goes to the store so everyone benefits. Pizza for workers is also a bribe.

Turn out was rather low - everyone seemed to have something come up across the board....
No hard feelings, though, as the men in the house had a great time, me included. Great group. No big problems, even with rules questions. In the end, a VP based day is clearly the way to make obvious winners.
Huge congrats to Gary/FOOL for driving ~6 hours from Wisconsin to take home the top spot of the day! After Rob stole one of his box sets from him I lost track of which he ended up taking, but I think it went Lilith, Pandora, and...um...Now I cannot remember. Conga Rats regardless - great gamer, great sportsman, great to talk shop. You're welcome in our house any time you can make it out, man. Don't forget - if you make the drive you're in free for any of my events!
Brian/Paperbagfox took second, losing to Gary in the near absolute mirror match (their Perdita armies were identical save for Fool's with a Witchling Stalker and Paperbagfox's with an extra Marshal). Brian, you said Fool stomped you, but at round three I thought you were both trading blows back and forth. It was probably me with my pesky rules interferance about your Perdita being unable to charge through or around that small puddle that cost you your game. Sorry. I'm a jerk that way. Still, you played a good game.
Rob Steiner walked out with third.
Rob, Josh/jmp_mydog, and Chuck, and Dave had the most interesting spots of contention, all fighting not just for their own win in the third round, but a win with the most VP to hit the third place spot. Snowball fighting was the unsung hero of the day, as predicted, giving a ton of points when you knew how and when to get them. In the end of round three, Josh won his game with 22 VP total and Rob won his with 23.
Just so I wouldn't have any second guesses about "but I had the most VP....why didn't I win overall?..." Fool ensured no shenanigans about it by clocking in at 24 VP. A win for the day with authority.
:)

Great day of card flipping. Everyone was fun to talk to and play against, both Bowshers were fun games and Fool was a great way to end the day.
@Bowen, the game changed when I lost my Nino and Fool still had his with no wounds. The reason I said I got stomped was due to walking out of the game with no VPs. It was a close game till turn 2 (maybe 3) and then thats when it all changed.

I had originally planned the event to run closer to the end of November, first weekend in December but put it back when Pandemonium announced their's just several days before I was ready to post mine and thought it'd be best for everyone to postpone it. I don't blame anyone that had other commitments derail their plans. I had a great time and loved everyone in the room. With lower numbers it's much easier to keep track of everything, keep everything running smoothly, and - most important to me - get to talk to everyone and know what's going on.
I had a really fun day.

I had a really fun day.
Damn it! I knew I missed out on something!
Hey all I had a great time, thank you.
My first game was against Mike. I took Lady J, 2 death marshals, Samael, Nino, and a witchling. Samael was cut in half the second turn from a mature Nephilim, Lady J took down 2 Mature Nephilim, and Lilith herself. Thank you Mike for teaching me how to play Lilith better.
The second game was against Godspeed. My crew was Perdita, 2 death marshals, 1 witchling, nino, and the executioner. Seamus ran forward a little to much very early in the game. Everything shot at him that turn, and could not kill him. I was very lucky and got to go first the next turn, and Seamus fell to nino. If I would have lost init or if Seamus was a little more back, that game would have gone to the wire.
The third game was against Brian. We had the same list except I took a witchling instead of 3 death marshals, and it made all the difference (not really but it sounds cool) The turning point as paperbagfox said was when his nino shot my perdita. I had my nino take out his (the imposter) nino. The center of the board was open for the most part, and I was able to cut down his units as they came to me after that. Brian was very fun to play, and it was another very good game.
Thank you all for the warm welcome, and I hope I can make it up there again. I know that I won't be at the top spot again, but I will try to keep you all on your toes.
BTW: Paradox it was great meeting you also.
ALSO a BIG thank you to Nerd for running the event!:cheer2:
I'm sure that I need to edit this for spelling.

Here is what I ran for the games,
Game 1 vs. Luke. I took Perdita, Papa Loco, Nino, Samael, and a Death Marshal. Used Papa for what he is .... a BOMB, took out three Marshals in one turn with help from Nino. Nino took out Nino with one action (trigger of Trigger Happy helps). Perdita took out Justice with some help from Samael. Jumped on the Claim and that was game.
Game 2 vs. Mike. Like the first I took Perdita, Samael, Nino, and this game I took 3 Witching Stalkers. Mike used the Hag (first time playing against her and the first Mike played her). The game was run, Mike used Conduit on Nino, which in turn took out Samael by him self. Perdita made the snowman and made him run away, then took out Bad Juju. After that is was back and forth. Mike thanks again for the game, I ended up taking her as one of my boxes.
Game 3 vs. Gary (Fool). As stated above I took Perdita, Sam, Nino, 3 Marshals. Even till turn 3 when I lost my Nino and thats when it all changed. Great game thanks again Fool, it was nice to end the day with that game.
Nerd thanks again for the day of fun.

Here's the ranking!
1. Fool playing Guild with Lady J and Perdita lists
2. paperbagfox - Guild with Perdita (and a Sonnia list once?)
3. Steiner - Arcanist with Ramos
4. jmp_mydog - Resurrectionists - ran Seamus every list, I think
5. Chuck - Guild with Lady Justice throughout IIRC
6. Godspeed - ran Res with Seamus all day. No, McMourning at least once with a beefcake flesh golem conversion.
7. Casto - Arcanists with Rasputina spamming tons of pillars.
8. Jeff - Mr.hobbito - Guild.
9. MBowsher - Neverborn. Ran all three masters. Zoraida for the first time at the event, I hear.
10. Luke Bowsher - Guild

Hmmm... 5 out of 10 players prefer Guild. Good thing I wasn't there to tip the scales! :P

The Guild do seem to be the favorite faction in most parts...
I'm glad I like 'em all (read as Neverborn).
Muahahaha
Godspeed

I like them all...Guild is nice, Lady J is a bit boring for me, but I miss my Perdita and Sonnia. Good thing this game is 1/4 the price of PP and I see 5x as many games...perhaps owning multiple factions is doable for a change :D Next up, Zoraida.
