View Full Version : Malifaux Crew Builder?

For a few other games I have created an on-line "army builder" so that I (and others) can build armies while away from our reference materials, be it cards or books.

Pulp City Team Builder (http://www.totengraber.net/pulpcity)
Anima Tactics Team Builder (http://www.totengraber.net/anima)
etc.

I'd like to do one of these for Malifaux, but I don't want to overstep any bounds. I am basically asking the creators if it would be okay by them for me to move forward with making the Malifaux Crew Builder. If there is certain information you don't want posted, like abilities and such, I can exclude those things and only include Soulstone cost and abilities that affect crew building. I can make it work and look however you'd like. If something like this is already in the works or you don't feel like it is needed, I can drop it.

I am also gauging interest from the Malifaux community as to whether this is worth the effort.

Thanks,
Totengraber

Well i can say for the rest of the community but i think that an army/crew builder would be awesome! cant see how it would be wrong, just a sign that malifaux is being treated as a proper miniatures game... :)

Very cool, I say go for it. I'd use it for sure.

I have been debating putting together an Malifaux iPhone army builder app but no clue when I am going to find the time to start it.

Should have an answer for you later today Toten, was on our 'discuss everything' list the last few days but that list tends to get bigger and bigger and only so much time in the day. Appeals to us though.

Yes, would very much like to see one. Some folks talk about how games with low point values don't need one but that really doesn't help if you don't have your book or cards with you when you want to mess around with some list ideas or if you're a new player planning to pick up a book and a 35ss army as your first order.

And a big +1 to anyone who wants to tackle an iPhone version as well!

Anything that lets me subtly sly off in work to build armies/crews gets my vote!

A phone app would be awesome, and think about how cool it would be if it had the full cards. I could just have my phone out while I play. I'd pay for that!

You could always just take pics of the cards to put on your phone. (Provided you just used them for personal use so nobody's toes were stepped on.)

I like the idea of an army builder...I say go for it!

I don't think replacing the cards is such a good idea. As if my opponent has a question about one of my models all I have to do is hand them a card and not a 200 dollar phone that will/can end up dropped or have peanut butter smeared in it.

But an app to make lists would be neato-keen.

You have people eating PB while playing? Your store has weird rules. Or lack thereof.

I don't have an iPhone, but I could program the site to detect the browser so that the site could be formatted for the iPhone. It wouldn't be a downloadable app, per se, but would be usable on the iPhone.

Works for me. Also, mobile devices really appreciate if you keep the size of the page reasonable and don't re-download the whole page every time you make a change. I can show you a web-based Infinity army builder that does this and it's really slow to use on the iPhone for that reason.

We do have the creator of tabletop commander on the forums. **nudge sam** maybe he is up for it?

On a seperate note... Someone makes an Iphone app that'll let me access all the card for building purposes. (if the wyrd guys allow it). I will be happy to toss out 25 dollars in credit for merchendise on the store here to the person that makes it. Anyone else wanna contribute to the "xprize"?

I have to agree with Chase on this one. A Crew Builder/Game Aid application for the iPod Touch / iPhone would open my wallet for sure. I would definitely be willing to pay a premium for that, especially if it featured a virtual deck of fate cards. Flick the deck to flip over a card, shake to shuffle, track SS's/Body Parts/Corpse/Blood counters, etc. Lots of potential there.

That being said, I'm also not opposed to a free web version either. Being able to tweak a crew list easily and on-the-fly would very nice indeed! Especially if it were able to detect your device for display purposes.

I'm curious about this too. I wrote this one for Warmachine & Hordes awhile back:

http://www.engineeringcalculator.net/ArmyBuilder.html

I'd like to do something similar for Malifaux, as it looks like I'll be playing this game for awhile to come :)

I think Privateer Press has figured out a happy medium. Until very recently, they have regulated what stats get posted online. I say "until recently" because they just released the MKII stats in pdf form on their website!

Anyway, as a result of their policy, most builders for WM do not have all full stats/abilities listed (as far as I know). And of course you cannot charge for the app.

....plus, instead of working we could all be planning out our next borken crew online!

I'd love to see engineers for Malifaux, Jeff.

Turns out it wasn't too hard to convert the WM builder code to a Malifaux Crew builder.

I've got everything working similar to the WM & Hordes builder, just need to get the Resurrectionists, Neverborn and Outcast data entered...maybe get it done tonight but these Bayern Dragon's Breath dark heffs are going down fast....may not be able to type much longer ;)

Honestly, Jeff, this looks better than what I was planning on doing.

I haven't had much time to work on the builder I was going to make, so if someone else wants to do this, please feel free.

I don't know though, I like the layout of your web builders and it looks like you are doing some validation plus including alot more model info than mine. As I've found with WM & H there's room for more than one. Mine probably won't be for everyone. Not sure how much validation I'll do. I would like to include more "model characteristics."

Well, it's done thanks to a healthy dose of OCD and beer...a Malifaux Crew Builder is online.

http://www.engineeringcalculator.net/CrewBuilder.html

Feel free to submit typos, criticism and bugs...just be kind, this is a hobby project and I was drinking when I wrote it :)

Here's a summary:

- Choose a Faction and Encounter Level from the control panel
- Add models by clicking the add button
- Remove them by clicking the "X" or dragging them out of the Crew Box
- Sort models by dragging them up or down in the crew box
- Companions are shown in parentheses below the model name
- You can Save and Load lists (need to sign in first)
- Click the "Show Copy & Past List" then press print to get a nice printout of your list

Limitations:

- Hobby project...bugs probably exist :)
- No Validation (an exercise left to the user)
- Sign in requires: Google, Yahoo, AOL or OpenID account.

Awesome job! Looks good, and easy to use!

Only one little thing to mention (as far as I looked)
in the first sentence is written this: "Use this page to build your next Malifaux Crew" With malifaux crew being a hyperlink. However, this link is directed to the privateer press site! ;)

One little bug I found:

Is that not supposed to be Seamus? Or is that right?

Quick work! Thanks Jeff!

Typos:
- I see that the FA on the Rotten Belle's is 1, instead of U.
- Bete Noirel instead of Bete Noire.
- A lot of the names in the Ressurectionist section are done as plurals, whereas singular would be better [Necropunk, Rotten Belle]
- Are the Mercs listed at 1 extra SS cost? That should be the case, if not. However, depending on the Master, the cost for Killjoy would change, so I'm kinda curious how that is worked out.

Also, the Totems should probably not be FA: U, and probably FA: 1 [except for Vultures and Mosquitoes].

Looks great though! Good job!

there's also a couple of problems with the exceptions:

1) Zoraida can hire any model with a WP of 4 or less (this includes papa loco and the gremlins)
2) Hamelin can hire a Ht 1 model (lots o' option)
3) Marcus can hire Any beast at no additional cost (Waldgeist)
4) Leviticus can hire any undead, construct or soulless.

Good job on a quick setup.

Yeah and as someone else mentioned Nicodem can hire any undead at cost as well. Which means Killjoy at the moment but who knows in the future.

Most of these things are possible, just not as easy as they could be:

You can load a different faction in the control panel and then add the models to an existing crew. So, for the Nicdem/Killjoy example, add Nicodem, switch to the Outcast list then add Killjoy at 11 instead of 12.

Some of the items listed will require better auto filtering. But this means that the models would need to be filtered based on Master, not faction. Something to think about...

Totengraber
10-15-2009, 12:05 PM
That is what I was running into. The validation of what is available under a master with weird rules or a minion who could allow other models to be recruited (or had restrictions in a scrap vs. a brawl) was making it such that I couldn't figure out a database design that would answer all the weird (Wyrd?) crew-building rules.

Good job, Jeff!!

MontanaJeff

Characteristics have been added to the models. I don't have the Johan/M&SU exception in yet. Probably will just a "M&SU" version of Johan at 1 pt less.

Obviously this is not the AoI or Tabletop Commander of Malifaux but hopefully it helps a bit with trying out some ideas and saving your lists ;~)

Thanks for all the input so far guys!
