Ok, just a simple question, when playing a scrap, what size have you found is your favorite? It seemed like a good time to ask to see what peoples initial impressions of the best size was, before different standards got set influencing your answer.

Vote away!

Hannibal and I have played 30SS exclusively once we got our learning games out of the way. As soon as we own more models (C'mon, RESTOCK!!!), we'll move to 35SS.

30ss has been the regular so far but the games are now inching up to 35-40ss for the added options or extra ss.

I have only played 25SS games so far, but based on the lists and models I keep wanting to build/add, I am consistently falling into the 35-40 SS range.

Does anyone commonly play games that aren't in multiples of 5's? I could see the rare game where both you and your opponent are just short of fitting some model into your list and decide to go for it but normally people favor standard sizes with round numbers.

And that's when you add the leftovers to your starting Soulstone Pool...

I like 35 points.

It allows you go a blister pack or two beyond the starter box in most cases and really lets you start to mix and match units.

You certainly could. I'm just pointing out that in all the reports I've seen so far people have played 25, 30, 35. I've never yet heard of a game which wasn't a multiple of 5 so I was curious.

Personally I'd probably go with 35. Big enough to let you beef up your starting Crew, but not TOO large.

35 is my favorite.

And no, I don't think we'll ever see a game not in an increment of 5. No tournament I run. Doubtful any games I quickly agree to play.

I sometimes like going with the big sized games, too, but my full preference for game sizes goes: 35, 45, 40, 60 brawl, 30. (I've thought about this a lot....)

I want to play a 42 Stone game!

Seriously. I wish I could have multiple choices on this poll. I like the 25-35 range.

We have been playing 30 or 35 SS and I enjoy both. I think there are some models that really need the room in the 35 SS game to be worth fielding.

Although i don't plan on going beyond the 35-40 mark as I really want to keep to a skirmish style game.

35 feels like I can bring the stuff I want but still make tough choices on bringing extra minions or adding to my SS cahce.

Plus, it plays quick!

I'm liking 25 soulstones alot right now but we need some restock because I want to play some 30 SS games. That is were I think the game will really shine!

I actually voted for 35ss, I think it's a point in a scrap that really provides a good balance of choice, speed of play, and crew flexibility. I actually think that playing at 25 is almost a completely different game in a lot of ways, where you really have to maintain a focus in your goals, which is fun, but shows a bit less overall strategy.

I agree though, it seems odd to do a game size not a multiple of 5, although it's in the rules, I don't see it happening often.

As Kealios said, we've been doing a lot of 30 SS games. I'd like to go up to 35 SS but might even consider 45. It would let me take Ramos and the Steamborg in one list along with all the needed arachnids.

25 is the way to go for me. Just enough wiggle room to experiement, but still small enough to get it going quickly.

Oh for the days of 80 stone scraps and 12 Stone Ortegas...

I'm going to try and get some 30 ss games going around here. See if the public is up for it.

anyone an idea of what size the game was designed/tested for?

I know the rules say you can get to brawl size and beyond, but I wondered what size game the designers envisioned when they were making it.

:)

I'd guess the game was tested with many of the stone sizes in mind...

Personally, 35 feels pretty comfortable. Just sayin'.

Then again, I play so many 40 and 45 that they feel nearly as comfortable, too.

30 SS is a great Size for the Gremlin Crew. It allows for a competitive list without giving our opponent the edge. Much more or less and things quickly go the opposite way.

I voted brawl but for scraps, 35 is the norm for me.

Brawls have sat in the 50SS range and are a tonne of fun, especially on a 3x3 board!

I usually add up what my opponent wants to play with and round up to 5.

Increments of 5 is a good way to know how many Soulstones is reasonable without overthinking it.

My third game was 50SS and started to become cumbersome, mind you, if we played it again now we'd be a lot faster.

The real clincher for me is 35SS is where you can (theoretically) have enough models left at the end to achieve Reconnoiter.

We're actually re-drawing Reccy at 25SS because its too hard to do while actually getting stuck in and having fun.

One thing we've done to reduce brain strain is laminate printouts of Strategies to the Malifaux Artwork Postcards and stick Schemes to old Magic: The Gathering cards with their backs spraypainted identically.

That made the game a lot faster and allowed Schemes to be brought in earlier with new players.

I think my most enjoyable games have been at 40 ss, when I have the time for them. 35 is also acceptable.

Not common, but every once in a while.
