Me and my buddy played our first game of Malifaux yesterday and boy was it fun!
We really liked that noob-feeling you have when playing a new game for the first time. You're spending more time flipping back and forth through the book than actually playing the game. That said, it was very insightful and we liked the mechanics a lot. Unfortunately the mail man tried to deliver my package with arcanists twice (but I was at work...) and decided to drop it at the mail office instead of with the neighbours (what he usually does). So I had to play with starwars playing cards and the rulebook for stat cards but in the end it worked out fine.

I played Rasputina's group and my friend played Sonnia's group. I killed one Witchling with the ice golem (charging with him is hilarious!) but two of my Gamin were killed by Witchlings (these critters are nasty) and Samael blew the golem away with two flaming bullets (ouch!). Rasputina had a hard time against Sonnia's and the Witchlings defences. I think I only hit once with my spells (which did minimal damage due to the witchling's resistance against magic) and the others missed due to Sonnia's annoying ability to discard cards to prevent the spells. Rasputina on the other hand was blown away by Sonnia's explosive spell which did 5 damage after two nukes.

My buddy then did a very nice trick with Sonnia. He first shot one Gamin for 4 damage (with a well placed cheat of fate) so it had only 1 wound left (it was practically impossible to deny that as he threw down a 13). He then used Violation of Magic IIRC to remove the last wound from the Gamin and then pop a Witchling in base contact with Rasputina. I felt cocky and thought it would work out fine so my Gamin charged one Witchling for some damage (I forgot the Heart of Ice rule the whole time!). The witchling next to Rasputina then swung its blade and hacked her in two. My friend flipped well enough and hit me with 1-5 combat difference (I used soulstone and drew a '2'...crap :D). He then had to draw two cards and use the low one...he drew a 12 of crows and the red joker! BAM! Dead Rasputina.

So I was wiped out with a big difference. Although it was only the first game I did get a feeling that for beginners this matchup is difficult for Rasputina. Her magic abilities are having a hard time against the Witchlings and Sonnia. The good thing is that my buddy is very enthusiastic about the game and that he will order some Neverborn after his holidays

Hopefully a second game soon! Let's see if TheWill2 is up for it...

I really enjoy reading people's battle reports and first impressions.
Looks like you had a lot of fun...
...and some bad luck.

I wish I had my rulebook already.
Can't wait longer. Must play.. MALIFAUX.

On the other hand, I feel, that I read the forums so much, I'm already pretty familiar with the ruleset, or at least the general mechanics behind the game.

I feel your pain man, Sonnia's a nightmare for Tina. (as she's supposed to be though). I felt utterly helpless against her. I suppose the trick is to bombard her with everything you've got, which will eat up her cc and hopefully nibble away at her before sending a Cerberus in to finish the job (if the bloody thing can ever get "leap" to work!). The problem with that is if you're concentrating on Sonnia, all her little buddies will be shooting you to bits!

I cant tell you how many times my defense flip for my Master has been horrid. Its happened to my friends, too. In short, if your Master gets threated, save a card to cheat with because history tells me you'll need it!

I love "first games" :)
