I think it is that they are to far apart for human eyes, or somehow to frontal for lion's eyes (might be a "distorted" look due to a short muzzle too). I agree, the eyes look a bit off... but otherwise a very nice fig.

After spending a couple minutes googling "lion roar" I have concluded that the eyes are too big, too far apart, and not high enough. Also the mouth isn't muscly enough.
