Does that title even make sense?

I used to be almost strictly a 'fantasy only' type of miniature painter/collector.

Occassionally, I'd buy a mini 'out of genre', but mostly my stuff was fantasy....based in the 'medieval' type time frame. And I had remained that up to about 6-8 months ago.

I've dabbled into the alternate ww2 genre, the PULP minis, the steampunk genre (thanks to Privateer Press and WYRD(pronounced 'wierd', btw), and now Sci-fi and 'survival horror' type miniatures.

Is it just me, or has anyone else seen a fundamental change in their mini habits? I am really glad I have...there are so many miniatures that I almost ignored previously, that now I am learning to appreciate...VOID, VOR, Superfigs, Alphaforge...etc. etc.

What Genre's do you like best?

I am for the most part a fantasy mini guy, stemming from my (much) younger days as a D&D gamer. I have dabbled a very little bit with the mechs too. I certainly enjoy looking at others' works in the other genres, though. I will hit various sites to see what is new, but as for actually what I paint, fantasy is 95% of it.

I used to be strictly fantasy, and that was in both my miniatures, my gaming and my reading. I started wandering here a bit back with the reading, and then somehow the miniatures followed suite and I find I like something that is much more magic/tech/mystical/sci-fi these days.

Does that make sense?

Most of my reading was strict sword and sorcery, then I got into reading Warhammer 40K and Shadowrun, then found my first books of Dresden Files, Anita Blake and that Every Which Way but Loose witch chick ... and that has greatly influenced my likes in miniatures as well.

You'll see some miniatures here in the future from Wyrd that really start to travel that direction as a particular style has captured my attention and the Wyrd Universe is diverse enough (remind me to type that out one of these days and let ya'll in on all this) to support it - well that's assuming sales support it. :D

Generally, swords and guns together of late have captured my attention.

I was asked a while back if I painted 54mm scale stuff and answered, "No, but I'm certainly willing to give it a try." Ever since I've found myself increasingly pulled at by the historicals particularily the medivals. Now this isnt a huge stretch out of my normal fantasy/steampunk tastes, but it has definately opened my eyes to a whole new world of options i would naver even have known existed otherwise.

I do have to agree with Nathan though that what I'm playing/reading will dramatically influence my current tastes.

I'll buy whatever has the most character, genreally speaking that's fantasy minis for me. Especially with my dwarf obsession. I do buy sci fi stuff but again character is important - Sacred Blade, Olley's Armies and Haslefree (amongst others) do this very well IMO.

97% fantasy and 3% what I happen to find which I like or get (can be anything). Definatly fantasy orientated and I doubt that will ever change.. I might get a few more others (at salute) (sci-fi, steampunk (most others I get fall under fall under that category, well it is closest to fantasy), historical (don't have any yet but want to have a few nice bigger sclae miniatures depending on price, theme and quality), all things else) in the near future to broaden the collection. But they always be vastly outnumbered.

I'm drawn more and more by historicals these days. I'm painting a big batch of Old West stuff, including my increasingly huge Bandito gang, and I'm also building a small force of Greek Hoplites, from Bronze Age and hopefully Vendel soon.

Too many interests! I'd like to do Vikings, samurai, Chinese bandits, US Paratroops, etc.

Anything different to the usual fare of fantasy cliches.

Give me sci-fi, horror and guns and I'm happy as a pig in poop.

I used to be 'all fantasy', but now I'm interested in a lot of different things. The only thing that doesn't seem to interest me at all is extremely hi-tech sci-fi.

Whatever looks good really.

I found out that I had developed quite a collection of Kev White sculpted minis before I even knew who he was or who had done them.
So therefore I conclude I follow the Kev White genre.

Funny...I have found that I collected a ton of Jason Weibe stuff, before I knew who he was....isn't cool how certain minis sculptors seem to hit the right buttons.

I general I prefer fantasy. But I prefer sub genres or altered setting fantasy to tradtional high fantasy. Privateer Press, Rahkham, Hasslefree, Wargods and Celtos for exapmle all have stuff that I really dig.

I do the ocasional sci fi work, but it usually takes a reason (i.e. a contest), and I have to really like the model (i.e. usually kev whites stuff). I think a part of this is there don't seem t be as many people putting out nice original sci fi stuff as fantasy.

I also have begun doing the ocasional historical mini. I prefer non military subjets usually.

I agree! I'm also pretty bored with the high fantasy stuff. Reaper minis usually don't interest me much, for that reason.

Are female minis a genre?

but I agree, fantasy has been largely done to death, and the normal stuff there is pretty boring now.

I used to be a fantasy oly collector, but the net opened up a whole new world of manufacturers and ideas and designs so now htese days I will buy/paint anything that I think looks cool. I have dabbled in PP, Sacred Blade, Future Wars, Warzone, Wyrd, as well as still doing the traditional fantasy stuff. Occaisionally I will paint 40K but that is not often.

I've found that I have really lost interest in straight up fantasy in almost all forms, miniatures, games and reading material. I like some of it still, but it really has to be something that grabs my attention, or is comical or OTT in a large way which I find fun.

Actually, what I wouldn't mind doing is getting some more of the more commical miniatures out there. There was the chaos toilet, the flashing dwarf, the female ogre blood bowl player after the goblin and a a few others out there that I think would be a blast to paint. Comedy is a big thing for me of late, like Cindy's miniature she did over on McGobbo's of the goblin target practicing on a teddy bear. That's a classic. :D

I typically prefer sci-fi minis. No more 40k though, if I paint another skull covered figure that isn't a necromancer it'll be too soon. I'll paint fantasy types to work on my technique, for a specific game, or maybe a contest. Though lately pirate themed minis have been garnering some interest. Since I don't paint fantasy that much, high fantasy isn't boring yet, but my only criteria is whether or not the mini talks to me. It makes it so much easier when the mini tells you how it wants to be painted.

I collect nothing. I've got an overdose of all GW stuff and quite mini collecting in 98 ( when I was fired in fact!!).
still looong time without the mental possibility to look at a mini (2 ore 3 years), selling all my collections.
now, i'm only with Wyrd ( of course) and Rackham. A little battle group from PP and that's enough...
