ok, well I thought I'd start one of these thingies also, I'm sticking up my last mini I did, and then work going forward, including WIP's

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/EricJ/Painting/Hyrekia-multi2.jpg

And here is my latest WIP, for the Works of Heart Hurricane project

any comments, critisism and suggestions always welcome!

As usual, I'm damn jealous - especially consider the rest of us schmucks use free flow, $100 brushes and all this other stuff and you do it all with cheap arsed GW brushes and water. Arrrgghgh!

That said, I would really like your hair receipe for the blond lady up top there and the armor receipe for the wood elf.

What are your plans with the banner itself - I know you have shied away from freehand in the past.

EricJ
09-12-2005, 11:13 PM
ummm, I am actually guessing at the hair now, it's been a little while, and I have the memory of a goldfish. But I think it was (in order of basecoat to highlight)

Snakebite leather/bestial brown -> Bubonic brown -> Skull white

actually rather simple in terms of color.

The armor for the wood elf is:

Scorched brown -> Graveyard earth for the dark areas

Kommando Khaki -> Bleached bone for the lighter areas of the wooden armor

I have stayed away from freehand in the past, which is one of the big reasons I'm doing a lot of it on this guy, to push myself a little. So far the wood armor, leaf skirt, cloak runes, and dagger handle (my favorite freehand on the mini actually) are all freehand, and then of course the banner....which at the moment I'm at a complete loss for. I'd like to mix some wind imagery into it, just to fit the cause, but we'll see. I'm tempted to make a spongebob banner, so I can buy him back cheep, then repaint the banner for GD LA :firedevil

Beautiful piece Eric! What are you planning on doing with the base - keep it on something as small as what you have it mounted on now or do something 'display'.

Either way - lovely use of colors and I know it is probably a small thing to notice overall, but I love the gems on this.

EricJ
09-18-2005, 12:48 AM
The base is still up in the air, I need to do a game base for him, but I may make it fit into a larger display base, I sort of see him up on a rock with that banner.

I'm glad you like the gems, it'd been a long time since I really did gems, I had to re-invent my method for doing them. :)

Nathan Caroland
09-18-2005, 01:58 AM
Yeah, see him up high waving on everyone. Sounds like a plan (you need to hold onto that bugger, win a GD, then sell it - heh).

As for the gems, one of these days when you've got time, you'll have to show us up a tutorial on them. One of my many weak spots.

One idea I had was a version of a hurricance warning flag, but I think the colors would clash too much. Maybe an "elvish" version?

Just an idea

The front of the banner read in elvish

and this is the back completely done, now that the blade on top of the staff is finished :)

However, the water base doesn't strike me as particularly wood elfish...

I don't know about that...maybe if it looked more like a lake or river, rather than an ocean. How big of a base are you considering, Eric?

:juggle:

Nathan Caroland
10-03-2005, 10:40 AM
Some very large rivers and rapids that move through forests and woods - might explain it away. Still, perhaps not rough water. At this point though, I would just go with what really catches your interest as to be honest, it is going to sell, and frankly, you're giving it away and won't be able to enjoy it anyhow.

EricJ
10-03-2005, 10:52 AM
yeah, yesterday I was all motivated to do more, today I'm realizing I'm sort of sick of the damn thing and want to be done so I can move onto some other projects.

Like....
Mini-company display minis
GD entries
all these fun sculpts that really interest me more than the darn wood elves!

so yeah, um, it might just get a little square base with some rocks and leaves :imsorry:

Ritual

That might not be such a bad thing! You know, sometimes less is more (damn, I hate that expression...). The future buyer might want to be able to use it for gaming and then an appropriately sized base is important.

EricJ
10-03-2005, 11:15 AM

I do want you to know that I did pick up the phone and start dialing some large family members in San Francisco for a small 'visit' Eric.

Yeah, well, me, I'm biased but in the end I would say do whatever catches your attention. If you are just giving it away and are sick and tired of it, toss on some leaves and rocks and call it good. If you want to have at it for a damn sight more, then do something more elaborate. Comes down to personal wants really.

THAT. IS. SO. COOL!

I love it! I want it! I think you did the right thing with a simple base, though that isn't simple for me, but I suppose it is for you. Very nice!

Speaking of WoH, I think that is a nice idea! I have to ask though, why are they selling everyone elses stuff, for some very high dollar might I point out, and calling it administrative fee's? It doesn't cost THAT much to sell these things, the Takhisis Dragon they are selling right now should cover EVERYTHING for the foreseable future.

Just wondering.

Jaw dropping Eric, really, really nice.

Ms Lily,
Hi, Administative fees, Shipping fees to the painters, ebay listing fees, ebays cut of the selling fee and paypal fees, Tracy found rather quickly that all of the fees for the shipping and auctions were more than she can handle out of her personal account. She is using the admin auctions to cover all of the above listed fees, when all is said and done, any admin money left over will also be donated (or so I understand). Tracy has spend a lot of time and effort on this project, she is not makinig a dime. :hail:
I hope this helps explain the Administrative fees, if you need or want more info, visit the WoH web site WOH Web Site (http://www.worksofheart.moonfruit.com/)

LOL, it's honestly really simple! I found a nice sized rock, I glued it to the base, then I glued some sand to the rock, painted the rock gray and the sand green...threw a couple leaves on their and voila! Base :D

Thanks for possitive feedback, I really nearly burnt out on this guy, so it helps :)

oh, and I forgot to mention a big thanks to Cindy for her help with a sketch I used for the banner (although her drawing looks way nicer than how I painted it!)

Thank you for pointing this out Mrs. Gin.

I have nothing against WoH or Tracy, sorry, didn't know her name, but the whole fees thing sounds off. I realize there are costs involved, and that there was shipping, but a lot of people on the site did that 'Adopt an Elf' and paid for the miniatures shipping and if I see right on the site, this is the first time I've been there, that a lot of people have donated a significant amount of cash, and then you have all the stuff being auctioned off for administrative fees.

That adds up to a LOT of money with just a bit of calculation and I have to say that I have sold stuff on ebay before, one thing going for almost three thousand dollars, and what she has there more than covered the fees involved. I hope it all goes well, just that it seems a bit much for people to be giving up all their stuff for fees which aren't going to be 'that' much, especially when the S&H fees being quoted are high for what the actual shipping is, so that helps cover some of the costs.

Again, I'm not trying to belittle what is being done, I just find the costs amazing.

I so love those metallics. They look crisp and pop more than Michael Jackson in the 80's! Truly awesome.

Not only my favorite WARMACHINE faction...also one of the coolest models in that range...and you did one heck of a job!! I really like that deep red and the NMM.

I do get the feeling that this photograph isn't as good as your usual work. It seems a bit dark and the NMM doesn't pop as much as it usually does.

About your NMM, do you have any tips on placing highlights and shading? I really like that style and would like to try it, but usually I get stuck when I need to find a place to do the highlights.

Oh and I would really post this on the PP fora...people will adore you ;)

Yeah, I didn't take the photo myself, I actually sold this one off about 5 minutes after I got it out of the PP case at Gencon (after finishing it about 5 minutes before it went into the case), so I never got to photo it myself. The fellow that got her (Rodnik, great guy!) was kind enough to take these shots for me, I finished them up/adjusted levels. I admit they're not super sharp, and the colors might be a hair off (I don't have the original model anymore to compair to get the colors perfect), as I don't think true white lights were used, BUT, I'm not going to complain and I'm very appreciative of his help getting these photos. I think the lack of full spectrum white lights dulled down the highlights a little.

I'll put them up over on PP once I remember my log in over there, lol, but thanks for the kind words!

Hey Eric, I hope you don't think me presumptious, but I thought I'd take a crack at fixing up your picture a little bit. Does this look alright to you? If you don't like it, just let me know and I'll remove it asap.
