Woot!

So... theme? Since there's no drawing random matchups and all...

Beelzebrush

I'm surprised I got thrashed by that much - and that is a substantial thrashing at this stage imo... and came third overall. It's been an odd comp really... half cocked at times and I'm baffled as to how I ended up in the semi final at all really.

I truly think it's my last IP, it's just too much of a drain for a very negligible return for the effort...; besides, my work evidently seems to be reducing in quality, and that's really the only thing that drives me to do this sort of stuff really....

Anyway, well done Bex, pm me your address and I'll forward you something for your efforts.

Well, Paintminion, you better win, so I can say at least I lost to the Champion:p:

Nope. Summer vacation starts next Thursday. I'll have nothing to do but paint for the eleven days before the contest.

...probably still put it off until the last Friday, though...

Dang it! I have to do another round?! I better dig deeper for some more iron then, because this is ReaperCon week and I'm just about out of iron! Hmmm, no matter what the theme, I'm thinking it will be a Reaper piece. :-)

But congrats to Bex for his win and becoming my hard to beat opponent (making me shake my brush in despair...Bex, why'd it have to be Bex?), and to the others who have won their freedom. Use it well.

I'm gone for Mother's Day weekend, so I won't see the theme until Sunday night now...Vikey, rest well from your travels. You don't have to post theme until then. ;-)

I disagree. I think getting the theme today would be just fine.

I'll still do breakdowns and such, but I better post the next theme: Look for the new thread!

Beelzebrush

Gah! where's the breakdowns :D

I'm itching to see where I lost this one...

I reckon it can only be on the overall aesthetic (which is where I'd have expected to lose slightly). The theme was very similar to Bex's so can't really see any points lost there, I reckon I edged it slightly on the painting side. Of course, it's only guessing :D

Reddog
05-10-2009, 12:16 PM
I'd like to see the breakdowns too!

Beezle I think your base was too big for the amount of figures on it! That really is my only complaint.

As for Patriotic I guess that Bex's guy carrying a big flag made it more patriotic than a union jack painted on your bot's head!

ArrrOOooo!

Beelzebrush
05-10-2009, 01:01 PM
Aye... I wish I'd had more time for a couple more zombie things on the base... and this would definitely be the overall aesthetic.. Oddly it looks fine in RL. Having a bigger flag would be a totally daft gauge of patriotism lol....

Cmon vikey let's see em!! :D

Congrats to all the participants on a fiercly fought round. And congrats (and commiserations) to Bex and Paintminion on continuing. I'll be rooting for Paintminion since it's time for the ladies to take back the IP bragging rights!

I'm watchin this like I do my sports .. not really wanting any side to win particularlyjust wanting a great match...

Paintminion was unceremoniously dumped by me in a titanic first round scoring blitz in the first round when we met in IP so I kind of feel that from that alone she deserves my cheers and flag waves.

Bexley's work so far this IP warrant the crown . consistently igh and boundary pushing and a great pleasue to witness.. And it would be great to knock out a two time inner next IP.....:D

both have produced some of the best themed entries over previous IP's and either produce giggles or sheer respect so halfway through the first tub of popcorn and looking for a coke.....

Sorry!

Here are some breakdowns!

Get jiggy wid it!

Best in Theme:

Bexley 19.5
Paintminion 19

Best in Technique:

Bexley 17.5
Brushmistress 16

Best in Overall:

Bexley 35.5
Beelzebrush 33.5

Here are the ballots:

Eric

Bexley
theme: 4.5
technique: 4,5
overall: 9.5
Notes: Great great entry, the whole scene you've set it amazing. The technical painting is top notch with just a few places that I think could have benefitted from a little more time. This is an amzing entry for 2 weeks work.

Paintminion
theme: 4
technique: 4
overall: 8.5
Notes: Great painting, and overall nice piece, I have to admit though that seeing it after Bexley's made me want this peice to have more to it. That said, you did a great job here

Beelzebrush
theme: 4
technique: 4.5
overall: 8.5
Notes: Really nice weathering and painting overall. I like the theme, and think zombies were a nice touch. I would like to have seen cleaner lines on the helmet, since that was the focal point of your theme.

Brushmistress
theme: 4
technique: 4
overall: 8.5
Notes: It it very well painted and of course fits the theme. I think like most of the other pieces, Seeing Bexley's first left me wanting more detail in the piece, but it is a very strong entry.

Nathan:

I think its great to see everyone doing the patriotic bit for their own country or background with the two Americans, one British and the French heritage. Fun stuff folks as this personally to me was one of the more troublesome themes this time about.

Bexley
Theme: 5
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 9.5
Bex, you continously surprise me through this Iron Painter if I'm honest as it seems you have upped your game considerably from the last time about. This shows very well, and personally, don't see a problem with the light pole as we've got some of those that color here down town, think they are supposed to look ol' timey.

Paintminion
Theme: 5
Technique: 4
Overall: 8.5
This is very nice Sue, love it actually, and would have scored higher if the base hadn't been so plain jane. Excellent work though.

Beelzebrush
Theme: 4
Technique: 3.5
Overall: 8
This is a good entry Beelze, just doesn't have the feel of your last few though like something was rushed or inspiration didn't really take a 100% on this one. Excellent base work, and I'm going to award decent points for the theme as it does impliment it in its own way (much like our own hillbilies around here with their hats!), but I think this one could have gone a step further. Zombies look like they are in for a thrashin' though.

Brushmistress
Theme: 4
Technique: 4
Overall: 8
Frenchie!
Smooth as usual and a fun piece here. Bit basic on the base as I've come to expect some more intricate pieces from you but this one is done well none-the-less.

Ritual:

Brushmistress
Theme: 3
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 8.5
Comment: I really like this miniature! It is a cute sculpt and you've painted it excellently. I wish the more subtle nuances would show better in the photo. The mini suits the theme rather well, but you could have done a bit more in that area, I think. But, you get good scores on the technical and aesthetical parts. Well done!

Beelzebrush
Theme: 4
Technique: 4
Overall: 9
Comment: A lonely guy defending his space (or country) from a horde of ravaging zombies... Yes, I'll buy that! Well done, especially on the scenery! I really like the destroyed walls and the general colour scheme of the scene.

PaintMinion
Theme: 5
Technique: 4
Overall: 9
Comment: Beautiful piece! And, I guess I can't fault the theme ingredient here. It's about patriotism AND it ties in with the film as well. I must comment you on the bravery of converting a Tom Meier miniature. I wish the photos were a bit bigger and a bit sharper so that I could see better the quality of the conversion, but from what I can see you've done a good job of it. The only thing that bothers me are the stars on the flag. They look a bit "doodled".

Bexley
Theme: 5
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 8.5
Comment: Great idea, and kudos to you for doing such an involved piece with so much converting and scratch-building needed. I like the piece very much and it is very well done, but there are a few things that bothers me slightly (rather small points, but nevertheless...). The rubble on the ground look a bit too much like a sheet of putty that's been randomly dented. I think it would have been better to have used sand, small pieces of rock and other loose stuff. The stars on the flag look a bit sloppy compared to the rest. The shoulder where the gun hangs from looks a bit awkward, but that could be a camera angle thing. Finally, I think the very saturated colour of the light draws too much attention away from the miniature. Too an extent, the flag (which is also very saturated) balances this, but still the light is the first thing I look at every time I look at this entry. Still, very, very well done, and I am amazed someone would undertake such an advanced project with this time frame.

Demonherald:

Bexley

I ike the overall look of this piece.. A few technical points pul it down a touch , the model itself is a little bit out on proportions especially the neck area which throws it out . The flag is very well done but the "stars" kind of spoil it for me.. That said I don't know many who would manage all the build involved and still manage to have time to paint actual stars.. The last thing is the lamp post . it throws the piece off balance and the shock of colour from it doesn't really tie to anything else n the scene making it stand out all the more.. That said still a mightily impressive amount of work considering the time frame.

Beelzebrush
Theme 4
Technique 5
overall 8

Like the comic myself which really helps you here however without prior knowledge of the comic and the character in question the piece doesn't shout the theme so I had to take that into account . the armour is lovely and would love to see it in the flesh . A lot going on with an unusual and pleasing effect. The overall scene is nicely done. could have maybe done with the base been a touch smaller to tighten it up a little or maybe add more zombies but all in all great stuff.

Brushmistress
Theme 4
technique 4
overall 7

Great final choice of figure . Different to the other entries and despite being a single unconverted mini does say patriot to me . The paint is s always pretty much flawles but the lack of any extra modelling and basework does lose a technique point from me I'm afraid. Great mini and one I have ust being painting and realise how teeny tiny he is bravo on taking a brave understated approach with this one and using great painting of a characterful mini o sell the theme.

Paintminion
Theme 5
Technique 4
overall 7

Great Job Sue.. This is a small and delicate piece and daring to e a crack at converting a Tom Meier piece does indeed warrant kudos.
I would love to see you do something like this in a larger time frame as it is a bit different to your norm but works really well. Perfect theme. technique wise a couple of areas could do with tightening up but again time and scale count for a lot . The paint has n overall feel to it much like a canvas painting and I really dig that. The base . OK time gets in the way and at least you d make a stab at it but I know you agree not your greatest . That said I think with a little tightening up the corn stalks idea does work quite well and acts as a great setting for him..
so please go back to him and tidy up bit s I would love to see it . Great piece ..

It's great to see the comments from the judges, so thank you all for taking the time to judge this round. I certainly don't envy you this job! I'm concerned about Bexley's talents in this competition, but I promise I will do everything I can to beat him! Besides, if I don't give 150%, Skya is threatening to thrash me. So for IMMPS, for women painters around the world, I will carry this flag with my head held high as I spiral down into ...Vertigo. Hmmm...I have lots of ideas...but I'll have to settle for one...but which? And it will have to be a Reaper piece as I'll be at Reaper! And it needs purple and teal on behalf of IMMPS, better work on the dagnabit base, some humor to it so I can smile through the painful paint sessions...hmmmm...I'm clueless right now, but it will come to me! I'm not backing down now!

Hey Bex? Go take a vacation, a break, watch some movies, get a social life for a few days, will ya?!

You know Bex, you have a few fans. You are one of these talented folks that we all love to hate though.

It's ok to hate the guy who appears on top and consistently does exceptionally well because the jealousy you fell will not do any harm. It's also much more fun to root for the underdog.

You are just screwed for a fan base in so many ways.
I'm sure you are beginning to understand how the Yankees feel. LOL

So I hope Paintminion wins. Only so that you lose. Otherwise I would so be rooting for the male in this competition. That and the non IMMPS painter as well!

(So yeah. I'm really rooting for you but I can't come off that way or I'll get strung up Malifaux style!)

It's finals week until Thursday, if that helps. I have an advanced trig final tomorrow, a CNC programming final and a Solidworks CAD/CAM final on Tuesday, and sometime by Thursday I have to demonstrate that I can sweep the head of a universal mill perpendicular to the table, center the spindle on a hole, and center the spindle over a slot in less than eight minutes. So there's your few days. After that, though, I'm unemployed and on summer break. :)

That's so true....especially when you get knocked out twice by Bex the master...but I remain one of your fans Bexley as your entries are really creative.

I also like what Paintminion did in this IP.

Good luck to both of you.

It might...mind if I go ahead and wish a few more delays on you, a full time job, needy family? I still haven't settled on anything yet...but I'm swinging towards a certain scene. And like everyone else, I'm a fan of yours too. As a matter of fact, I have a song, just for you...

Well, I reckon Bex's performance in this comp has been nothing short of mind-blowing. Superb builds, superb ideas and kick-ass, seat-of-the-pants stuff that's worked a bloody treat. I reckon you'll probably win again (or maybe PM could do it - especially if you repeat the quality of the marshmellow dwarf toasting guy)

Looking forward to the entries.
