That's right Paint Fans!
The final four is here!
These four painters have already done battle on FOUR fronts! And the stakes keep getting higher. The battle of attrition continues, with the Final Fantastic Four!!
Right to the matchups. These are randomly selected by RANDOM.ORG.
Bexley vs. Beelzebrush
Brushmistress vs. Paintminion
Oh my!! This is going to be good!!
The theme, sticking with our 'meta-movie-theme' is
THE PATRIOT
Interpret that the way you see fit. Show your true colors, go for a movie scene, or just plain ignore it...JUST PLEASE THE JUDGES!!
The deadline is
SUNDAY MAY 4th 6 PM Central Time! (look it up!)
Will the final be all 'B' named contestants?
Will Beelzebrush defend his countries honor against a horde of Americans?
Will Paintminion her dominance?
Will Brushmistress just make up her own theme?
Will Bexley keep hold of that crown?
Will Moavoamoatu ever watch the "Quest for Fire" again?
Who will surprise? Who will advance? Who will fall short?
All these questions, and many more will be answered in the next installment of
THE IRON PAINTER...
WHICH BEGINS
NOW!!!

Erp. Ummm. Nope, I got nada. Can I tie in Mel Gibson?? Hmmm.... (looking around at paint desk full of waiting projects), nope, no patriots here. Aren't they a football team? Never saw this movie, so I gues it's freeform on the theme again...sigh.

I wish you all good luck. I am glad to be out as this theme seems hard. No idea except the movie....but you can't score with the movie theme, can you ? ;)
Such a shame...I am painting 18th century miniatures right now.

Yeah, but I think the key is that I'm always planning on starting early. It just never seems to happen that way. If I were to plan on waiting until the last minute, I'd probably be screwed. Sort of like how I'm also "starting" my main GenCon entry right now. We'll see how much is actually done by August. (Though, I'm guessing it's at least a month and a half of scratchbuilding, so I haven't started by August, I probably won't)

Crazy, but not at all unusual for them. I know that the Arwen Jeremie painted for Games Day Chicago 07 was done in 10 hours the day before the show. I've got two entries on the table that have no paint on them yet...I'm not even done with conversion & assembly and Games Day is May 9th. I'm really cutting it close, but that's what I always do. I painted the Samurai Ogre (http://www.coolminiornot.com/101114) in the final 40 hours (no sleep) before Games Day - the resin in the fish pond was still wet when I got in the car.

Hey BM,
Do you have any other shots of the tree on your Samurai Ogre piece? I'm curious to see how you did the transition from the trunk to the gypsophilia.
Moavoamoatu
04-19-2009, 03:20 AM
Ambrose, you just have to use Milliput or a similar putty. Just drill the trunk to glue the gypsophilia branches in the holes (a 1mm driller is enough) and then use any kind of putty to make the transition (I was too lazy to make it on one of my trees though as my entry was rushed).
TheBugKing
04-19-2009, 10:20 AM
Thanks Eric, I am curious about how Jess made it look more then the process. In the pictures it doesn't show how the joins look. It's obviously supposed to be a cherry tree and they often have large nodules where the branches attack to the primary trunk.
That is what I am interested in seeing. Especially if Jess added a bunch of formerly trimmed branches.

Well, I'm off and converting! Saw the movie now and despite the depressing scenes, it was pretty good. I have a good mini...but not quite the movie look I want, so I'm cutting up a Tom Meier figure. ((((shudder))) And then there's the sculpting part that I have to do to match Tom's work....ehem, so why did I join this contest again???
So buzz all you want "B"s! I am feeling my Yankee Doodle Dandy! And I love macaroni!

Macaroni in the song (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maccaroni_%28fashion%29) isn't pasta, and despite being considered a patriotic song, was in fact sung by the British in mockery of Yankees.

Well, I know that, it's about fashion and being "all that", but that's the point...you can't mock me with it! Americans took it to heart and began singing the song with pride, and thus most Americans still know and sing the song today.
But my converting goes well...though I haven't started the hair yet. Dang Mel Gibson and his unbraided pony tail. I'm singing Yankee Doodle as I chop and swing that file....
So, it's my theme song, but not my inspiration. No girls, no ponies, no feathers.

Yeah, it was something like that. My American history is better than most (since it's mostly self taught, and not based on the lousy job that the schools do- seriously, my son is 12 and I had to explain who Davy Crockett and Benjamin Franklin were. WTF, public school?) but my memory is fuzzy on the actual origin of the term.
[EDIT: Actually, the answer (TBK was right) was in the wiki link I'd posted.]

Nouveau riche (litterally new rich person) means someone who made a lot of easy money in a short time and acts in order to show he is rich : such as driving a sport car, wearing shiny jewels, having a house with rich but awful furnitures,....it's just to show that he is richer than you are. He doesn't act with discretion.
Crazy, but not at all unusual for them. I know that the Arwen Jeremie painted for Games Day Chicago 07 was done in 10 hours the day before the show.
I can top that Jeremie story! ;-> I don't think he started painting entries for ReaperCon 2008 until he arrived there, then he started painting one a day until he finished one he wanted to enter. He was working on some final touchups on the base during a class I was taking. The due date for entries was in the middle of the class. A friend of his came over to collect his entry to make sure it made it in time. He went on with the class, only stopping to work on his entry when we students were working on something and he didn't need to talk or demonstrate. I think the waiting friend almost had an aneurysm he cut it so close to the wire.

I was pleased to see that one of my favorite painters, Remy Tremblay, got two Demons. Maybe when I get a little more confidence I'll enter a GD here. (I'd do so now, but it'd be the primary reason for flying out to one, and I'm not spending the cash to get there unless I feel I've got a reasonable chance.)

Well, it was sort of a Harlequin, if they played their guns like flutes with magical music notes and puzzle pieces floating about. It's a truly beautiful piece from my favorite painter, but I agree with the decision.

You're good enough for GD Bexley, and I truly think it. I am not...and I wouldn't be patient enough to spend hours on my entry.
I don't agree with you Brusmistress, it was a EE miniature....no matter if it plays flutes. But as Jérémie is my teacher and my friend I was disappointed : his diorama is clever and awesome.

Moa - Please don't confuse my agreement with GW and my love of the piece...it's in their own rules, and while the mini is outstanding, it doesn't bear any resemblance to their "world". I love Jeremie's work, and think that he's an amazing person from the small time I spent with him.
- from Golden Demon rules...
"We welcome conversions based upon our Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 game worlds in all appropriate categories, but these should be consistent with the atmosphere of the game worlds and spirit of the miniatures ranges that we produce."

Thus the Feather in his cap called Macaroni being a slur to show that the individual is Nouveau Riche or in bad taste for one's class in society.
It is actually a rather nasty slur but much like calling one's self a merken, Americans are rather oblivious (In general, mind) to these terms.

I don't think I'm quite there yet. After all, they don't have a theme category in the judging at GD.
I will be entering at GenCon, though. If I do well there, then spending the cash for a trip to Baltimore (Chicago is closer, I know, but it's a city I never intend to visit again) to enter the GDs might seem like a better value.
Of course, then I'd have to spend more than two days on an entry.

So:
Million Dollar Idea Number One: Buy a lathe, and go into business selling turned bases in the US.
Million Dollar Idea Number Two: Hire a sculptor, and produce 54mm/1:35/1:32 scale skeletons. (Skulls aren't an issue, as GW proportions are so out of whack that their skulls are the right size.)

You ... could, but the money involved in trademarks is something terrible some days, particularly if you get a lawyer to do it for you, then the price triples.
That said though, GW came out with their own contest the second season that we were doing it and it is a completely different feel to it.
No worries though, folks know where the real Iron is and I know I for one am damn impressed with the results that everyone puts out!

I did make a plinth, though. I couldn't find good sized offcuts of maple at the fancypants lumberyard, and I wasn't going to buy a five foot length of 3"x3", so I ended up laminating some 1x4 together, and then trimming it to size on the table saw. Looks fine, though you can see the layers a little on one of the sides. The stain hides that a bit, which helps.

What a rotten night. I think Beelzebrush has cursed me.
Preface: I'd ordered two sets of five Hornet heads. It's hard to really tell exactly how they'll look via internet, so I picked one set that had a face I thought would work, and another set that contained another face that I thought might work.
I was working on the head, which needed some helmet straps. One had already been applied, and I needed to set it down for a minute to leave the room. I didn't want to wreck the strap, so I put the head in a forceps to set it down.
I came back, and it was gone. It had popped out of the forceps, and shot across the room to who knows where. Since I wasn't in the room, I didn't even have a general direction in which to look. Might have landed in that open drawer, or an empty soda can, or the trash. Or rolled under or behind something. No idea.
After two hours of searching, I finally decided to use the "backup" head. I'd spent about an hour earlier in the evening, debating which head to use. I grabbed the Plano box that had those bits... and no head. There were eight Hornet heads in the box. The one head that's missing? The one I need. No idea where that went. I'd had it earlier. I might have set it aside when debating which head to use, instead of putting it in the box, but I had just meticulously cleaned and searched my bench and the area around it looking for the other head. If I'd set it aside, I'd have spotted it then.
I can't for the life of me figure out where the second one went. The first makes sense for being completely gone (To see if maybe I could figure out where it landed, I tried sticking bits of sprue in the forceps and then popping them out. They went all over the place, some over ten feet away from my bench, bouncing madly and pinging off of anything they hit, causing them to randomly change direction.) but the second? It would have had to have been in the area right around my bench.
I am $$$$$$$$ed right now. No time to get a replacement. I settled on another head to use. It's alright, but a little too young looking for what I'm trying to go for. I might see if an IG head will work- they're so weirdly scaled, it might not look too off. That, or see about altering the Hornet head to look older.

So sorry to hear about your woes Bexley. I sympathize...I was building a model for Games Day (the Ogre Samurai) and had ordered an Inquisitor sword for him to hold. I repositioned/resculpted the arms the model came with and had them such that I could place them in the sleeves of the kimono after they had been painted. The time came for me to paint those arms, and I couldn't find them. I looked all around my table, all over the house in case I space cadet left them somewhere they shouldn't have been. They were just gone. I remembered I had cleaned my table off mid project and the best I could reckon was that I had thrown them away. I had to use the back up sword when I made the second set of arms, and it just didn't have the same flair as the first one I'd chosen & lost. I cried for most of the day after that, and I've learned to never clean a table mid project.

When I clean my bench, I put every tool away, then sweep all the little bit of junk into a small pile. I throw them out piece by piece, to make sure I'm not tossing anything.

Hang in there Bexley, somehow we'll all make our projects come together. I now have to sculpt a hand to match the one Tom Meier sculpted..I just can't stop shuddering. I'm sick of flag painting, teeny tiny models, and Mel Gibson. Did we answer the question about who chose this theme?!

It's up. Twice.
(Supervike: I made one, then realized I forgot to auto-level it. So I did that, but then uploaded the un-auto-leveled one. So I uploaded the correct one, though it may have gotten in after the deadline. However, looking back, I did it right the first time- the one that has the filename "ip6r5collage" is the correct one, and the first one I uploaded. The second one I uploaded is "ip6r5collage2" and should be deleted.)

No disrespect to the awesomely talented and wicked cool demonherald (did I say he was awesome? Yeah, I did, good...) aren't the guest judges supposed to come from the ranks of Iron Painter losers?

This is an odd stage of IP I reckon. There's very little activity and very sparse comments on entries - and mainly from the other painters lol (and not all of them either ;)). It's almost an anti-climax tbh... and it's definitely a war of attrition now....
I'm not really expecting to advance this time. I think my entry is more technical than Bex's but probably not as punchy... however... who knows!

just got back in from London and will be having a good look at the entries tomorrow......
aweome work as expected... agree that it can feel a little bit of an anticlimax sometimes at this stage and tiredness really sets in I'm sure Jim wouldn't mind me asking if anyone has any ideas that may help maintain the interests of the eliminated paintersthroughout the comp more.. always great to get a glut of new blood to start with but hose who get beat seem to vanish...
anyways great stuff and will be casting a careful eye over them and firing in results as son as possible.

You opened a can of worms Ron. Apart remaining painters, people left the IP thread and even former IP painters did. I can tell you why : it's far too long, there are other contests at the same time so people get tired or bored or are too busy. 6 rounds represent at least 18 weeks, almost 5 months !!!! That's half of the year.
When you take part in IP as I did, you hardly can enter another contest at the same time without being stressed. And I don't speak about everyday life (work, family, hobbies,...). To be honest I was really glad to be out of IP in the previous round and I don't even know yet if I will enter IP next year because it takes a lot of time. My wife was upset when I was preparing my entries and I could do nothing else (apart a terrain commission). I could paint my miniatures (about 50), play games, and build terrain since I am out. No more stress and no dealine.
It's not a secret : when IP painters send PM to each other they often say : "I wish I will be out this round, I have so many other things to do". But pride let you in because you wish you could beat your opponent.
I think IP should be shorter and should take place at another moment in the year (not with Games Day, TT//FF or other contests) if you want to keep interest in it.
If you want it to be shorter you have different options :
- 3 or 4 painters instead of 2 in the first and may be second round could be "paired" and you gain one or two rounds this way
- 1 week to paint instead of 2 (but it might be hard because you can't order miniatures, you might be on holidays,...). So 10 days might be corect (1 for Bexley is enough as we could see :) ).
- a new challenge may be : keep the final round painters for next year and give them immunity until the semi final. The challenge would be : "be a survivor, become a Stainless Steel Painter and beat last IP winners".
I am sure there are other solutions to keep IP alive and living.
IP should not last more than 3 months (that's a maximum) if you want people to get involved until the deadline.

Part of the idea with IP is that it is SUPPOSED to be gruelling. If it was easier and shorter and all that, it wouldn't be the same competition.
And moving it to another part of the year would only mean that other painters would have it clash with their GD efforts.
It's funny how you get 18 weeks to become half of the year, as one year has 52 weeks. ;)
BTW, my votes went in this morning.

Yeah, it's the toughest part of the IP contest...seeing how the interest from the eliminated painters wains, while the survivors just survive.
Next round I am incorporating EVERYONE as a guest judge.....meaning I'll be asking for votes or scores from whomever is interested and average them into a legitimate 'guest' judge score.
The I THINK I CAN entries were supposed to help painters still feel a part of it, but quite frankly they get mostly ignored (by me as well!).
Anyhow, this will probably be my last IRON PAINTER.

Most of all, I think they are being ignored by the eliminated painters. I count 3 "real" I THINK I CAN entries (one being a proper entry that was allowed to compete due to difficulties uploading, and one was a second entry by Moa). And, frankly, I understand fully... without the pressure of the competition, why should people push themselves? You might think, when the new theme is presented, "Hey, I've got an idea for this? I'll enter it in the I THINK I CAN...", but when push comes to shove... what's to motivate you to do it in the short time frame when you don't have to?

I'm still here and watching. (do you feel more special now? lol) I guess I just don't really have much to say... I got eliminated, and haven't really found much to say after that, I mean I can't really talk smack now can I? But you know I'm checking those entries.... Some stellar stuff!
I'd agree, this is a grueling competition. I planned on doing ITIC till the end, but the freedom I got after beeing eliminated allowed me to participate in a lot of other things. For beeing the most grueling contest out there, there is absolutely no tangable reward for the all the hard work. Vike promised me a big doughnut or something if I made it through ITIC, but its tough to keep up that pace (for me at least). Plus my entries were pretty pricey and time consuming. I had a blast, don't get me wrong. I don't want to come across greedy or always wanting something or thinking I deserve something for entering a contest, its not like that at all. But I think some random shwag trown out here or there would increase activity late in the game. Just my thoughts for what they're worth in grains of salt.
IP wouldn't be the same without you SV, please don't abandon it!!!

IP is SV and SV makes IP what it is! I think it would be the end of it if you went Vikey. You really do make the atmosphere for the whole thing and it's a credit to you that it works so well... It would certainly be a sad day if you were to stop being the MC!! :(
Re being at this stage of the comp.... I think my point was that you really do need iron at this stage as it becomes a bit of a thankless task. But, it's a task you can't bring yourself to abandon. I really don't think that shortening the comp would work. This is most definitely a marathon and not a sprint.
I maintain that it's the most engaging comp on the interweb and for me the it's best comp on t'web. I get to push my own boundaries and do it under pressure... which at times is quite a fun place to be - but others (such as the deadline being on Easter Sunday) it's a complete feck-up of a pain in the arse but it's that that makes it IRON.
Other times I want to scream............. PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!! :D
Anyway, to summarise... it's a great format and Vikey is DA MAN!

Not sure where the idea that we don't give out goodies came from as we have always done so. Have I participated as much this time around and really talked up everything, no, not in the least, as quite frankly, I'm just too damn busy and if I had it to do again I would make certain there was a more qualified painter and community based person to be there for the judging as these days, its a rush rush run on the whole bit.
Back to the goodies, we give them out, have given them out, send out t-shirts, gift certificates and we even have gone so far as to get a trophy put together which I was about to advertise today but quite frankly, have been too dead tired to do so. Hasn't been said, but the winner of this round of IP gets the new Zomb-pup (working name) bust that we've put together special for contests (only way to get it, no buying).
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff29/Wyrd-Miniatures/Painted/Zomb-Pup.jpg
As for the IP itself, I would hate to see Jim step aside from the Iron Painter but quite frankly, its a grueling process, time consuming and there are ALWAYS people complaining behind the scenes and eating into someones backside about something (this wasn't fair, why did this happen, pick my themes ...) and it can get a bit tedious. Myself, I'm used to it after a few years and that stuff is like water off a ducks back, but it DOES get tiresome. If Jim were to step down on this, which I hope he doesn't, with his blessing and oversight like to keep it going as I feel that it is a staple here at Wyrd. Maybe we'll have to take some steps to change things around a bit, add more prizes or the like along the way (could do the commenting bit for certain now that I think about it), but its something that can be done.
IRON PAINTER is a hell of a contest. Personally I think it takes a lot of effort, imagination and time just to enter these. It is NOT meant to be easy and I think personally that some of the best pieces to come out of this hobby in the last year or two have been from folks participating in the IP. The contest makes you think, push boundaries and more importantly, get competitive and make yourself go that extra mile. I for one am very proud to be part of it.
That's for another time though, we'll continue to give it some thought and see where we're going with it all.
In the mean time, fantastic entries this time around folks, really fantastic.

I reckon that Bex has this to be honest. It's a great piece and he's an amazing competitor.
I'm thinking that I may not want to do the next round anyway. I'm going on holiday on the 20th of May too, so I won't be able to give another round a good shot, also, circumstances are a little fraught atm with an increasingly busy work schedule lots of bad personal mojo (I touched on some of it a while ago) and other stuff, including a couple of commissions and a potential exhibition for my 2D paintings that I need to put in the hours for (this is where my heart lies in terms of painting endeavours). With this in mind, I reckon I'll withdraw from the comp.
I'm not trying to avoid the enevitable - and by all means post the results, I just don't have the time or energy atm to do everything!!... I'm 99% certain that Bex has this anyway..
Good luck Bex

On the other hand, my luck is evil. My bad luck doesn't mean I'll never win the lottery, it means I will win the lottery and then lose the ticket. It wouldn't have me get eliminated in the first round. No, that's too simple. My luck will wait until I see that there's an extra goody for winning that I really want, after making it all the way to the semi-finals, and then cause me to lose. It'll make me sweat through five rounds, fighting the deadline, only to have me lose before the sixth, because I get out of school for the summer next week, and would actually have plenty of time to complete an entry. My luck makes a Brit the guest judge, in a round where I face another Brit when patriotism is the theme. (Not that I think DH would ever give dishonest scores. But you have to admit, the situation is perfectly in keeping with how my luck works.)

Well, I'm considering stepping down for a couple of reasons...but none of them are too serious or filled with angst ridden drama.
I'm a smidge burned out, I think,..I've been taking classes and playing loads of Xbox Live, which has been eating into my quality time. The Iron Painter really isn't too much of a burden, it's fun to do, and I enjoy the interaction. Even the 'behind the scenes' stuff is always amiacable, even when there is opposing viewpoints. But, I just feel a bit 'tapped out'.
I think some 'fresh blood' would be nice for the Iron Painter. Give someone else the reins and see if there are some new twists that could kick it up a notch. See how another organizer could do with themes, and matchups and creating interest, and all that jazz.
The Iron Painter has become a Wyrd staple, and I think it should continue to be so. I'm not needed to make it successful, it's the community that does that.
PLUS....I'd love to be a contestant of the IP someday. I think I could show all those Beezlebrushes, LevyronYOr's, Mamomoamoatmaotu, a thing or two....

It's my fault the I Think I Can gallery started. When I was knocked out last time on the first round, I was very disappointed because frankly I needed to push myself after the chemo, and Skya guaranteed me that IP would do that. It certainly did, plus with the I Think I Can, I gave myself some slack when needed and didn't go quite as elaborate as I would have if I was in the race itself. It literally brought me back to working order by the end. So, it's not necessary as a Gallery, but heck, I think those still in the contest should have to score the I Think I Can's! Give us something to do instead of pester people for scores! Also allow the ITIC people to keep talking smack. ;-)
As for Vikey, as long as you are still around, and heck, if you're in the race, I think we can deal with the change. I understand well the need to step back and make some changes in your life. But who wants to go up against you?! You are the community favorite!!!

I will save my thoughts on IP for another thread another time when my brain isn't frazzled but will just say.. Vikey you really do make the comp for me but that said you hit the most important note it is the whole community that rally fires it and I think that's why it feels a little lonely at the end as the community dissappears and get's busy with real life...
