Great theme, and some interesting match-ups. Moa vs Bex, Skya vs Brushmistress... interesting. AND, there's seven match-ups meaning that there will be seven winners and YET another gimme' another chance. Who will that be?
And Jim... I think Jess will remember the theme, alright! It's just that she won't give a damn about it! :D

cool theme - repeat of last years final then (only without me) will moa get revenge?
so r2 d2 we meet at latst.
you have the advantage that i will have only 1 week to do my entry in but the disadvantage that i have 1 week also to think up the best ever theme (and you know my theme-fu is strong already.

Oooo - deadline same day as the WAMP Wyrd competition (but 6 hours later). EDIT2: Nope, exactly the same time ... that'll be fun....
Have to think about this theme (with a view to actually finishing an ITIC) - bit hard though with all them extra padding words....;)
I know I seem totally crap and unreliable but I've more or less sorted everything out now regarding my return back to the old place and there have been some 'aggressive negotiations' so I can dedicate myself a bit more to this.
Not that I'm motivated by revenge or endlessly annoying or anything but, Commander Y: do you fancy some ITIC opposition? We could arrange independent scoring and the usual mini forfeit for the loser if you like, for extra incentive (just don't send me one of mine back!;)). [Since you continued in the ITIC last time....]
Just let me know Dude - if it's you I might break out my new brush....;)
EDIT: Well, what are the chances of two consecutive posts beginning with 'Oooo'?....

True, it can sometimes be hard to find modern miniatures or unarmed miniatures such as civilians. The other problem is to find compatible miniatures as manufacturers have different standards for the miniatures size and that's tricky.
I have the idea for sure now, I almost have the miniatures too and I can give you the tittle of my entry : "escape from Jim's mind".
Jim I have to admit that this theme is the best I have ever seen : I had many many many ideas when I saw it as it can be interpreted in many different ways. Now it will be hard : two IP5 finalists paired in this turn !!! I am sure the others will be glad if one of us is out this round.
Bexley, are you still looking for a miniature ? Is it to ship it to me ???

And even if you find one that works, it's never quite the right pose, or there's one part of the clothing that dates it to the wrong era, or something.
The sculpting I have to do won't be too complicated, so I may be alright. And it'll be the first time I paint a Wyrd mini for IP. Well, part of a Wyrd mini.

I've got three potential ideas for ITIC but don't actually feel like doing any of them: two are puns, the cleverer one involving a mini I would both have to buy (and therefore wait a week+ for) and would never want to paint in a million years....
Just out of interest, is anybody considering a pun based on a song and a certain Wyrd mini? If so, I won't. Probably the one I'd most enjoy doing, though does mean I'd have to order the mini.
I'll defo go for it if Commander Y accepts my challenge - might devote myself to the Wyrd WAMP competition (and finishing off some minis) otherwise....
I'll see how it goes.

I've really been struggling to figure out an idea for this one.
But tonight I was hit by a bolt of inspiration, and have come up with something. If I can pull it off well this will easily be the most ridiculously stupid project I have ever done (but in a good way). If I don't pull it off well it is going to be a train wreck.
Triumph or disgrace awaits, stay tuned kids.

Splish splish, I was paintin' a bath
Long about a Saturday nite
A rub-a-dower, just relaxin' in the shower
Thinkin' everything was alright
Well, I stepped out the tub, put my feet on the floor
I wrapped the towel around me and I
Opened the door, and then I
Splish, splash... I jumped back in the bath.
Well how was I to know there was a painting party going on?
They was a-splishin' and a'splashin'
Reelin' with the feelin', movin' and a'groovin'
Rockin' and a'rollin', yeah
....more later. I've got some Orcs to convert... Sculptie, bring it on! I'm out to have some fun with this....

Commander Y: It's too late for the challenge this Round (it appears it takes a week and a half+ to get a mini sent 50 miles in this ridiculous country ... still waiting...) but consider it an open challenge for every Round (though you'll have to let me know soon after the theme's announced).
So it's just occurred to me that this mini painting lark is supposed to be enjoyable (and actually finishing stuff seems to go down well). I got a box of new, shiny minis on Friday and I'm just going to paint one of those (two if I've got time, which I probably won't with the other competition). So:-
Brushmistress: I'll swap you some Iron in exchange for some of your 'Theme is for Suckers!' mega-flair: I guess you won't be needing it this time. I'm not painting a Werner mini, just so you know - the one I'd like to paint which fits the theme happens to be about the only Freebooter mini I like which I haven't got round to buying yet....
Bexley: Bad Bexley! That's fighting talk where I'm from! Well, where I'm from everything's fighting talk (it's a bit grim ... so glad to be back...) but you know....

And just when I thought I'd finaly got all the fall-out from my move out/move back sorted (and paid off most off my debt) so I could concentrate on the good things - minis! - just found out today that the ol' bureaucracy's been up to its tricks in my absence and brought into play an event that could have me arrested for fraud at 9 tomorrow morning, if they feel like it....*
Mmmm, reckon sorting that out might be my main priority....
[I hope you guys realise how nice I am in almost constantly biting my tongue about such things so as not to upset anybody ... much as I'd love to share what ... never mind....:vb_devil:]

KatieG: Yeah, my handbook tells me that things are supposed to quiet down as you enter your middle years.... Dunno, but the one constant in my life is that given any chance whatsoever, any bureaucrat, official or 'authority' figure will always f**k me to his/her maximum ability.
Come the revolution, I'll be sure to show them the same mercy they've always shown me [thinks of some of the scenes in 'A Tale of Two Cities' and rubs hands with glee - now, if we can just get people to stop watching TV...].
Bexley: It's the curse of IP I tell ya! Seems to even extend into ITIC. Seriously, since I came back from Ireland about six years ago I put myself back together and got pretty serene. IP5 mashed me up in every way (or the events going on around that time, plus IP5 itself) to the point that I realised that I had to change where I lived. Saved up for nine months, moved, IP6: Boom!

For IP5, when I needed suds in the washtub, I made tiny little balls of green stuff in varying sizes, sliced them in half, and then glued them onto the water surface, starting with the larger ones towards the center of the suds. But that won't work if you're using a resin for the water.

For suds on the "Dirty Laundry" theme last IP, I made little balls of green stuff & glued them together. I then pressed them into some sculpy (a kind of over bake clay) to make a mold. After the mold was hardened, I rubbed a little vaseline into the mold, and them poured resin into it - pop out the resin and voila, clear bubbles. I added some micro glitter to the resin with mine to give them a little sudsy sparkle.

I wonder how many bathroom scenes we'll get this round...
One thing about bubbles, I know something that doesn't work (so no need for trying it...). I once wanted to create them with Realistic Water from Woodland Scenics. I thought, if I lower the surface tension with some soap mixed into the liquid Realistic Water, maybe the bubbles stay long enough to dry before they pop. Nope. Didn't happen.
I'm glad my model already has bubbles sculpted on!!!

I'm waiting for my order. Luckily, next week is "spring break" and I have the entire week off. Granted, most of that is going to be devoted to another project, but I should be able to get an entry done.
I plan my pieces in "stages" so that once a certain level is reached, I can enter it or continue working towards the next level. Suds, though, that would really be fun...
This type of planning sounds like it would make for a great tutorial. Or class!

I usually do mine that way as well- at least, for IP, with the tight deadlines. I work out all the stuff I want to do, but only begin with what I need to do for the entry to work. Once I reach that point, I begin adding in the rest of what I'd wanted to do, if time allows. Which usually means the accessories get painted last. Except in the last one the girl got done last, as the jacket and metal tools were more important than the figure was.

I'd thought of doing the shower scene too. I was thinking of doing it from "inside" the shower, with the shower curtain as the "back wall" of the scene, and then painting the silhouette of Mother on it. I didn't think I could do it convincingly enough, though. Also, I expected a lot of shower scenes. Also also, I wanted to get super nerdy and incorporate more of the subtext and motifs of the movie, since we spent an entire month on it in a film class I took in college. Finally, that will have been money spent on something useful.

My entry is inspired by a Graham Masterton novel (Walkers), a movie (Mirrors) and a french roleplaying game (Patient 13).

Why is everyone jumping on the movie? "Psycho" the just the theme idea, it says nowhere that it has to tie directly into the movie of the same name. At this point I'm dreading seeing a gallery full of a bunch of shower scenes. Ugh. Thank god I'm not a judge since I think at this point I'd give bonus points in theme for NOT doing the obvious.

It would only be boring if there were a lot of shower scenes trying to directly recreate from the movie. And at least Neolis, I know, doesn't have a shower in his entry. Now, back to Pryvet Normunz Showur....

Dunno if the shower scene is that unoriginal, for me, it was the first thing that came to mind, so that's what I started, it'll end up fairly complex though, considering monochromatic painting. Just seems to me that that's basically what happened with everyone else too, hats off to Hitchcock for making such a memorable movie I guess.

I am not doing the shower scene, but I am doing it all in black and white. I figured I wouldn't be the only one. This'll be the first time I'm actually using the movie instead of a different interpretation, though I'm not doing an actual scene from the movie.

I am going to market fine precision ground tweezers (both regular and self closing styles) with silicone rubber tips. So when, say, you're trying to carefully glue an arm on, the rubber gives the tweezers some grip, so that the arm doesn't fling out of the tweezers and fly across the room. (Not to mention, the silicone would prevent the tweezers from being glued to the part you're gluing...)
No, it means you rule at IP. The only reason I'm not doing it is that I don't think I could pull off painting the silhouette to look like it's being seen through the translucent shower curtain.
Who says it will look decent when I paint it? I just had no better idea. If it isn't good enough, at least I've learnt several things:
1. making a shower curtain from plasticard hurts your fingers (I heated it above a flame to bend it)
2. monochromatic is horrible to paint, by now I even think I can see color when I'm painting only black and white... my brains are really fooling me.
3. I really have to watch more movies so hopefully if I proceed to the next round it is a movie I've seen recently... that should provide more original ideas.
No showers here, although the whole silhouette idea did go through my head. I'm just not up for something that friggen complicated that I dont think I'd enjoy painitng in the first place. I did have great idea involving a mirror that I just couldnt get to work... and another couple really cool ideas that the figures dont even come close to existing for. Meh. Suffice to say I've gotten nothing done on this piece in the last week except for throwing one idea after the other out the window. I do think I've at least finally settled on what I'm doing, now to see if I can actually make it look good.

Art mentioned doing a B&W piece...but I found too much humor in the colors and stuff I'm doing so it's full color. Shower is all painted, only have a shower curtain to do...and I found some wire form sheets that are meant for sculpting and such and just might work perfectly, or Art brought home some cheese cloth and maybe a combo will work. It will be the last thing I work on probably. My wall and floor turned out really well, very happy with them!

Of course, he can't actually "beat" me, he can only even the score. You could even argue that since he wouldn't be beating me to win the whole thing, that I would technically still be slightly ahead...
Realistically, though, my bigger concern is time. Late last night I finally finished building everything, and I primed it all this morning. But I only have about two or three hours a night to paint, because I'm doing a huge project for Cipher Studios that has to ship the morning after the IP deadline. I'd prefer that if he beats me, it's because he beat me, not because I had to half-ass it. (Or, more specifically, if he beats me, I'd rather deal with all his smack knowing it was at least a clear win, instead of always wondering, "well, if I'd had the whole weekend to paint like I usually do, then maybe...")

Just setting us up for your resignation speech are you?
How generous of you. All this hype and all that results is a half assed entry. What a sham.
Bexley
03-17-2009, 10:47 PM
Not exactly... half-assed or not, I'll never hear the end of it. I don't want to be kicking myself forever for not properly beating him again. (If I really wanted to deny him a fair fight, instead of a half assed entry, I'd DNF, so he'd never be able to truly say he'd beaten me. But that's the kind of thing a weaselly frenchman would do.)
Regardless, it's up in the air. If I've gotten enough done on my other project by Friday evening, I will be able to take Saturday off and paint all day, as I usually do for IP.

Don't try to find any excuse Bexley just in case I would kick your ass this round. Last year I had Malifaux gameboard to build during IP. This year I have a terrain commission, I had to prepare a wargame convention for last week-end and tons of miniatures to paint and I don't whine. :D
If I beat you this round I would technically crush you and not even the score as you write : last IP, it took you 5 rounds to beat me, but if I win this year it would take me only 3 rounds to kick you out :vb_devil:

*A bunch of snotlings crawling over an ogre pinching and biting them in a state of total frenzy.
*Vikey behind his PC after seeing he's made a miscalculation...again ;)

I figured since you had goblyn's "schizo" comment in your sig line, that you were happily psycho, and that was the basis for my psycho comment. Not any insult to any painting to terrianing abilities on your part, lord knows, my own abilities are mediocre at best. I don't know about the terrian building part.. maybe if it involved using shovels I'd stand a chance agianst you. ;)

Ahh the joys of emotionless text.
I certainly wasn't hurt by what you said. I was just shooting back what I got. I even tempered it a whole bunch for fear of pushing your insult buttons. (Dreams of statements about can't build themselves out of a wet paper bag come to mind... <sad face>)

I don't know. You asking me out? I like flowers, long walks on the beach at night (I don't go out during the day) and dark chocolate. I prefer to build terrain over painting minies and need a good amount of me time.
If you can put up with that, convince my wife that she no longer wants me and convince me that you are a better choice then my wife I'm all for it.
Not that I like to add stringent stipulations to things mind. I think all of that is really reasonable!
So, Saturday 'Dita? Or are you still trying to extricate your self from the belly of that frog?
Peterdita

lol,
Well Moa passed me like a prune and after some arcanist repairs, I'm back up and running! (well limping at least)
If I give you any flowers it will be for you to make me honey. I don't normally do to the beach during the day either, I'm to pale and the sun burns my white flesh.
Dark chocolate we can share.
I would love to sit down over a large pizza, some beer and build some terrain with you. We can fiddle around and get nothing done. Then you can show my how to skulpt fimo bases and chip paint.
As for your wife... She prob just needs any excuse to jet anyway, so that shouldn't be to hard. I'll just let her know that we need a new queen and she better run before the workers kill her.
Saturday will not work for me. I will be finishing up my IP entry like a frantic mad man without you. Although this one is sort of a terrain thing that I could REALLY use some of your thoughts on. Bummer for me your not on my block.
So in summary, maybe just a prolonged engagement?

You could run fishing lines from the shower head, then paint water effects.gloss gel onto it. Then coat the fig with some gloss varnish. Of course, you stand a good chance of ruining all your work, too.
That problem honestly hasnt been number of ideas... I've had a lot of ideas, but ideas I'd actually enjoy painting. Part of creating a diorama for me is investing myself in the project, being in it in a sense. Psycho is not some where I really want to be for long enough to paint something and the one I've come up with that I'd be willing to do just arent interesting enough to keep my attention... Meh. If I end up with time I'll have to put up a montage of the pieces I've looked at and tossed out in the WIP section. :P

Bexley is right the fishing lines trick is the best but it might be dangerous for your miniature and you should make a test first.
You can also try to use water gel such as Woodland scenic on a sheet of paper, let it dry and then cut some "water lines" in it. This trick is used to make moving water or staglagtites.
You could also forget the showerhead and just place some water around her feet. In this case you could use the technique used in a previous IP : "the rain trick". Sorry I don't find the photo of the miniature. You should see rain drops around her feet.

I'm not in the IP anymore, so I've been painting some minis not thinking much about the contest. Yesterday I finished one of them, and I realized it could be posted in the ITIC gallery, as it fits the theme :) It's uploaded now, feel free to check it if you have some time ;)

Was this the one you were looking for Moa? It was done by previous IP winner Skya when the theme was "weathering" (IPII, round 1). It's one of my favorites by her.

Actually, I just found the image in the gallery, clicked on it to 'blow it up', then right-clicked on it and chose 'Properties' on the menu that pops up (usually at the bottom). Then I copy the Image URL and paste into my reply in the tags. Simple. :D Basically creating a link to wherever it's already hosted at.
Which is why if you click on it you end up at my website instead of at the Iron Painter Gallery. :)

I am lucky because I am french. I didn't realised psycho was the Hitchcock movie because in french the tittle is different. So I had many ideas but none of them about the movie.
Some examples :
Colour purple = la couleur pourpre
Ful Metal jacket = Full Metal Jacket
Psycho = psychose
As it is a very old movie I could not think about it. Hey Jim, is the next theme a Charlie Chaplin or a Buster Keaton movie ????
Good luck Hitchcock fans.

As for the shower head, either fishing line or sculpting some kind of shower of water, making a mould and casting it in water effects. I'm going all the way, might mess it up, or it might turn out really well, it's IP, you gotta take executive risks :p:

Besides movie titles weren't always themes. In the past, themes were more plainly stated, like "weathering", "OSL" or "NMM". These movie titles are just Vike trying to get creative with it.
