Hello painters!!
Round one is officially in the books, but never being satisfied, the Iron gods demand more sacrifice, so onto round two we go!
v22TTC, despite falling short last round had a good enough score (a damn fine score actually) to advance using our coveted "Hey Gimme Another Chance" prize.
Names were randomly matched up using RANDOM.org, your best supplier of all things random.
Przemas vs. LavronYor
Lukhan Sanath vs. JakubT
v22TTC vs. CommanderY
Stubbdog vs. Thryth
alizardincrimson vs. Morf
Brushmistress vs. Dragonforge
HamishMcGreigh vs. Bexley
ThunderhawkerMinis vs. Ben$quig
PaintingPloddy vs. Wargriffon
Waghorn41 vs. Darklord
Moavoamaotu vs. Hinton
There are some UNBELIEVABLE matchups this time.
Most notably, poor v22TTC draws an immediate rematch with CommanderY...then again, its a great time for revenge!!
And some very 'heavy hitters' got paired up.... DANG this is going to be good!
Right to the Theme:
LIGHT MY FIRE
Again, how you choose to interpret that is up to you. Obviously the key word is fire, but it's all about pleasing those judges! Remember also, that we have 11 matchups, and provided we have 11 advancers, another painter will be spared the axe with the GIMME ANOTHER CHANCE prize!
The Deadline is SUNDAY MAY 18 at 6pm CST! (my time, look it up!)
Can Moavoamaotu and CommanderY keep up the amazing quality?
Can Brushmistress and alizardincrimson save the contest for the women? They stand alone, in a field of Iron deprived men!
Can Waghorn41 score more than 25?
Will Hinton be able to stay awake, with his double work duties?
All this and more will be answered in this most contentious round of the IRON PAINTER...
Which Begins...
NOW!!

Being drawn against Paintingploddy in this round is bad enough as a few friends had already ear marked him as one to watch as it is :D
I have to agree with you Jim this is definately going to be an interesting round.
Don't know where you get these themes from but hell I wish you would keep the lid on the box and not let them run wild like this.

hey, it's not unnecessarily OSL, while that is one obvious interpretation of the theme, you have to remember, judges do tend to like more inventive interpretations too :D

05-02-2008, 10:50 AM
I agree, OSL is but one choice the painter can make..."Light my Fire" can go many ways!
If any of you care, I went and finally left comments on the previous round. I try not to do it at least until after the judging.

Moavoamaotu vs. Hinton
Well, this is pretty lopsided.
Will Hinton be able to stay awake, with his double work duties?
Probably not. I'm at work and having trouble staying awake. I need a caffeine I.V. drip.

Anyway, as I said in the other thread, I'll have entry, even if it's nothing more than just basecoated.

See, CommanderY - told you it was fated for me to take you down: this is Wyrd after all!!! ;)
Your one trick pony was a cute little nag, but let's see you pull that off again.... This time it's two weeks of painting - no messing about with GS, learning how to use a camera, photo editing software nor researching my so called opponent. Victory conditions and idea locked in, `opponent' vaped!
Waddya say to double or quits on the mini from Round 1?
HamishMcGreigh
05-02-2008, 09:02 PM
So v22 and Commander Y are going to have to bludgeon themselves against each other again? I like: Two man enter, one man leave!
@ Bexley: Worry not, I suck at OSL too. Why don't you paint a mini and then douse it in lighter fluid and take photos while it burns.
v22TTC
05-02-2008, 09:23 PM
I think it was more like I was bludgeoning myself against him whilst he was out for a liesurely stroll... last time!:vb_devil:
Now I see I really need to butter Ritual up... "Hey, I used to be a Goth too (for many years)... fancy a slightly used `The Reptile House E.P.' T-shirt?..." ;)
I see my plan for a Rocky style win paid off - get battered and battered then come through at the end: Biff!
Thanks for the chance to carry on - I love IP; perfect blend of brutality with just a little compassion. Best competition format I've ever come across! :)
@ Bexley: Worry not, I suck at OSL too. Why don't you paint a mini and then douse it in lighter fluid and take photos while it burns.

I see the poor Commander's too scared to show his face... nevermind - you can always do a troll crying "Mommeee!!!" because he's just burned his finger [and still probably win... grumble...]. ;)
Anyway, that's the come out fighting bit out of the way - truth is I was totally delighted to be up against you this round... I had a feeling I would be... kind of feels right, you know, and you were a phenomenal challenge and top bloke! :)
I hoped the very literal (plus humour and other bits) interpretation of theme would get me some Brucie bonus points last round but didn't seem to matter a fig so I think I'll take a leaf out of your book this time... you'll see what I mean....
My gut/Muses/Inspiration is/are speaking very loudly to me but I might be leaving the door open for a bit of `you didn't take the theme very literally'... which would really peeve me! We'll see....
Think I might have to give GW some of my hard earned for this one too.... :(

OK, minis chosen, prep done on the one I own and starting as I mean to go on with an all-nighter so I can get to the shops early... let's just hope I don't have to order the other minis....
Reckon we'll be seeing the same minis pretty often this round. I've decided to trade off some Farside style humour for a bit more theme literalism... shame really but I wasn't feeling too lucky on that one.
CommanderY: Been thinking it would be ace if I won this one, you went through with another chance and we were matched up again! I'm sure you've got a pretty good chance of being the highest scoring loser this round.... ;)

Not really one for this smack talk milarky just out for the fun and enjoyment of painting :D should be a good match between us and hopefully a very close scoring round I look forward to seeing your entry.
I've had several ideas and picked out a number of figures to play with ideas and word play on the theme and I think I have narrowed it down now :D I did consider using a few FW Death Korps figures and a guy on fire but it would involve a lot of messing about and a bit longer than 2 weeks to make a decent job of it I think so I have gone for two figures and a play on the theme :D Am I going for OSL? well that would be telling and you will have to wait and see.
I have two that will fit what I want niether of them are GW or FW (and like my 1st round entry I think I will try and stay away from them as much as possible) so they will be cleaned up and primed later today and should be ready for a start painting by tomorrow. I think I can get them both finished by the deadline but I am struggling to pick one in particular so it will be a case of which ever one looks best when finished and the photos taken.

Hmm, a Yorkshireman AND a Sheffiel Wednesday supporter. Methinks you've just cursed yourself doubly my lord. And then you only THINK the esteemed judges are good looking. Thrice cursed.
Me, I KNOW our transatlantic cousins are smart and sophisticated with Hollywood star looks and I'll buy them a drink or three when I'm in the States in August if they're in the New York or Niagara Falls area. Anyone for a large slice of cheesecake too?

I am ready to start as I bought the miniatures this morning. This time it won't be GW but Rackham. I first wanted to use a fire Reaper elementalist but it was a bit too easy to post a single miniature (especially when Vikey wants me to keep the pressure). So I went for a scenery once again, without OSL, without fire and without light.....and it won't be blue at all.

Hi,
I believe that Hasslefree ZOMBIE-HUNTER (B) has one (looks like one to me, anyway). I don't know about the flamingo.

Hasslefree and Weswind too (road warriors range) : both make chainsaw warriors and Hasslefree makes chainsaws alone.
For flamingo, try Hell Dorado miniatures.

Well I got the GW thing (= paying an insane amount of money for a mini I don't even like and once owned but gave away) out of the way this morning then tried to track down the third model I need... everyone's out of stock or closed for the Bank Holiday (as are the distributors) so I'll have to wander over to Sheffield on Tue morning to get one (the only place who had one in stock - but they're closed 'til Tue)....
Shouldn't put me too far behind but it's nice to have all the major elements together so you can get your composition sorted before slicing and dicing your minis up.
Much as I'd love to do a night time scene with sweet OSLs, I think it might end up too much like my first entry and as an unknown I kind of have the disadvantage that I need to prove that I can actually paint, conventionally, so this piece will have a bit of everything (paintwise) to put that one to rest - so I can then merrily experiment with later rounds.
This has kind of doubled the work I'm going to have put in but probably needs getting out of the way.... :(

Well despite the shock I had yesterday I managed to stop my hands shaking eventually, long enough to finish cleaning up my entry and prime it and this morning I have startind splashing paint on it :D hopefully by tomorrow evening it will be far enough ahead for me not to worry too much about it as I lose 3 days this week as I am involved in a charity golf competition.
I am my handycap or its the 13 sticks in my bag that is the handycap still working on it though and I make sure I get value for money by playing the most golf each time :D

I've been quietly plotting all the possible inferrences and subtleties of the phrase "Light my fire"... I may end up with OSL flames on burning people, or a cushy love scene with candles, or an attitude filled army scene with cigarettes, or perhaps a creepy looking arsenist...
But I've not done much but ideate yet, and gather bitz... and gaze into blister packs... I'm painting a damn Eldar army with all of this too!!!
Anywho, I'll be around... maybe even a WIP pic will show its dirty face..?

Well, Thursday evening my wife and I headed out on a roadtrip to Nebraska for a wedding. Only 16 hours by car...
Merrily rolling along through Colorado on Friday, I sent Jeremy (Angel_of_Menoth) a text message, asking him what the new Theme and matchup was.
So he sez, "Light My Fire."
And, honestly, after the Dire Troll last time - there IS only one thing I could possibly do for this Round, right? I mean - isn't it obvious?
But I didn't actually own the Pyre Troll. And having no stores where I'm from, everything has to be mail-ordered. And that would get the Pyre Troll to me... Oh, approximately 2 days after the deadline.
So I text Jeremy again, to find me some Privateer carriers in Colorado - and lo and behold, there's 3 in Colorado Springs which was just coming up over the horizon.
A little VZ Navigator cell phone magic later - and one of them is only 2 miles off the highway. Sweet!
And on the last peg of Trollblood blisters, at the very back... They had one. So I'm locked ad loaded.
We got home again about 3:30 AM Monday morning, after driving straight through on Sunday. So after a day of recovery and catching up (and my baby Doxie is HUGE now, in just 3 or 4 days, my god...), I'm back and ready to begin.
I just might have an entire Trollblood army done by the end of the Iron Painter. Now if that ain't a cool by-product, I don't know WHAT is!

I'm running two companies, have a pretty regular life, no children but a high maintenance dog ;)
I gotta say that the entries so far ROCK! I love your entries, guys!
PS: I'd love to be a part of BlitzPainter. 5 days a round.

Blitzpainter could be nice but not for all rounds as we need time to rest and do someting else.
The other idea could be : get all themes at once and post all entries.......but it wouldn't be the same challenge.

You could always have a "Special Edition" of the Iron Painter. Have all of the past IP champions face off in a special contest where each round is one week. Maybe the rest of us could vote on the theme. It could be:
The Iron Painter of the Iron Painters!

Yeah, I had a very similar thought regarding that.
Like what Jeopardy does with the Tournament of Champions.
But, we need more folks to win, other than Skya....lol

Well, it could be a four way matchup between this IP winner, Skya, Wren, and Cindy.... speaking of Cindy, where has she gotten to? I don't recall seeing her here much recently. ???
Actually that could be a very cool charity event. Get 8 best Iron Painters, do 3 rounds and auction the masterpieces. That would be SO cool!

IIRC, something similar was discussed a while ago and some of the people who would have been involved weren't too keen on the idea of losing their pieces - something I 100% understand!
Would be nice to see some variations upon the IP format from time to time though; as mentioned previously, it'd be interesting to see a round where folk could score the pieces (the popular vote, or whatnot, which might get a prize or would decide a tie) and then the judges would score the pieces - their scoring being dominant, as it should be.
I'm not to keen on public scoring. Look at CMON. It's a celebrity festival. Some items published in the same time have 10-20 times as many votes as others. And then, there is the sniping...
ThunderhawkerMinis
05-10-2008, 09:42 AM
I agree about the sniping at CMON. Some folks are just bitter about the fact they cannot reach the level of some of the painters there and take it out in the only way they know how. Generally though it evens out in the end.

Couldn't agree more about CMoN - it usually makes me feel a bit ill to be honest - but don't forget that we're all righteous, fair and pure in heart!... ;)
So, got my lovelly new Nikon P80 but have no time to play with it (though reading 20 pages of the manual a night before going to bed is working wonders for my insomnia!).
Realise that despite my best intentions, I have ended up having a crack at something too ambitious (three big minis with a decent amount of conversion) and that Pyre Troll can only really be described as a miscast - no wonder it was the only one left in the north of England.... He's turning into a real time-pit, just to get him to look presentable - he's the one I was relying on to be fairly quick and easy.:censored:

While I'd certainly be willing to do a season of Iron Painter Championships, for one thing I wouldnt want to change the format too much (1week rounds sounds amusing though) and for another I'm not willing to devote *that* much of my time to a charity event.

I'll keep giving it my all but I'm finding that two weeks just ain't enough, given my other commitments.... :( In all honesty, I'll actually be quite relieved if I get knocked out for good - my other commitments involve a lot of patience (something I've never been richly blessed with) which is totally at odds with the IP tight deadlines....

Well, Corporal Why, that's not a bad smack-talk comeback (though I don't get the reference to that dude from Hair...).
Might as well call it double or nothing at this stage - it'll be cheaper for me to ship two minis at the same time anyway.... ;)
I considered my last/first piece to be more or less finished, just needing another day or so to polish it but pretty much everything's kicking my ass this time round, so whatever I upload on Sunday will probably need at least another week to get it looking like I would want... it'll be a bit embarrasing really ["I can paint - honest!!!"] but I won't DNF.
Still, I've learned a lot (again) and if I get knocked out I can devote myself to that Anima 2D painting competition - there's a slim chance that a mini might be made from the artwork... reckon that's worth some serious devotion... and there'll always be IPVI (where I'll be better prepared) for me to give you the spanking you so richly deserve! ;)

Commander Y: Cheers for explaining the reference (I like to know stuff) - I know explaining a gag is a bit of a sinking feeling.... EDIT2: We don't tend to call it `Manchester, England' too much either.... ;)
Don't want to sound too defeated - you just never know how kind the next few days will be to me (not very, I'm guessing, but who knows?) and judges' subjectivity can do surprising things....
Anyway, Infinity minis aren't so spendy over here (probably not so much over there either, except relatively to the super cheap prices you get most minis for) - like £5 or £6 for a regular sized, white metal dude is pretty standard (on the low side) around these parts.
So, whatever happens, I'll send you the catgirl - it'll be a nice feeling to see her painted in your gallery, knowing I sent her to you. If I lose, I'll send you another sweet Nomad; if I win... well, I'll be pretty busy dodging the flying pigs but we'll sort something out, but Kitty's in the bag anyway! :)

But what I want to know is - what are you using for such a perfect black background? Well my entry is in, I really am not happy with it though and to be honest unless it looks better on the judges computers than it does on mine I can't see me making round 3 :(

I mean, what was I thinking!? An F'n DRAGON!?
I briefly entertained the idea of painting up a dragon I have, but didn't think I would have time for it.

That's kind of funny; this round I worked with GS for the first time ever and I kind of liked it. It's pretty obvious that I didn't know what I was doing with it, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.
Working as fast as I can; trying to get one more mini painted before the deadline. I definitely won't be able to get everything done, but most of it will be. After I get back to a more normal schedule, I'll finish it up.
