ok, so it's sort of miniatures, but also sort of not, but I stumbled across this site and was incredibly impressed by his work

Realistic fishing lures (http://www.solarexpert.com/fishing/more-fly-tying.html)

There are some techniques here which would look amazing in dioramas, all you need to do is exclude the fishing hooks

Those are absolutely fantastic!!

The guy is quite an artist...the mayfly is especially real looking.

My Grandpa used to make (and sell) his lures. It's a very similar (in nature) hobby to being a miniature lover. He even got a few of the sporting goods stores around here and up to the mississipi to carry his stuff....very cool.

It's funny you bring this up I've just been trying to figure out some good flies for a Nurgle beasty I'm working on for GDUK and was looking through my dad's flytying stuff and there are some really cool things...he's been tying them for a few years nowhere near as realistic as this guy but some of the techniques really have piqued my interest and got me trying to figure how to carry them across to minis....cool stuff...
Oh and stick a few maggots on that bottom pic and *shudders*

yeah, there really has to be something to this, since the realism is pretty extreme and it uses completely different techniques than are popular in the miniature hobby right now. If I had the time I'd definitely be into digging deeper into just how he manages it and trying it out. But at $150 per little fly, seems like it much be a good deal of work

I think most interesting are some of the tools in the how-to section. I can see many of them coming in handy.

Though, the super cool vise he uses seem to run around $400. Bummer.
