It was a controlled burn to control the growth of the forest so it's not too dense. It was done by the government state forest dept that was considered successful but got reignited by nature (dry weather + 80mph wind + warm temperature)
Plus fire is a common sense. Everybody should know not to play with fire, right? LOL

<OT> I once had an idea for a reality show where people would break these stupid laws, film it, then see if they end up arrested.
Granted, not all of them would be feasible (the naughty ones, though I'm sure Showtime could probably have their own version of this, with the shows about Vegas whorehouses and all that), but I think it'd be funny to have an acrobat hand-walk across the street in Connecticut or carry an ice cream cone in your pocket in Alabama, or for me to just walk around in Massachusetts (I have a goatee and no special license!) just to see if this stuff actually gets enforced. </OT>

I wonder if I'd lose points for an entry that didn't have a "miniature" in it...
Are you doing your own body painting? or a life size statue? :)
Bexley
04-26-2012, 10:56 PM
It would technically be a miniature, in that it is a much smaller scale than reality. Essentially, I have a scene that fits the theme, but doesn't actually have any people or creatures in it.
I do have a figure in mind that will work. But it doesn't really add anything to the scene; it's just putting a figure in for the sake of putting a figure in. I think the scene actually works better without the figure.
On the other hand, it's a miniature painting contest.
PaintMinion
04-26-2012, 11:17 PM
Bexley, I understand the difficulty - I have an idea that did not involve minis as well. But this is a miniature painting contest, and minis are expected. Work it out your way, I will work it out mine - now I am off to decide which cuteness will get worked into my scene and add to the story. Dagnabit this is hard!
Death Angel

I have my idea for ITIC and started converting last night. Have a Super Dungeon Explore Candy and Cola to complete first, then I'll start serious work on it.
I'd be okay with scenes that didn't have actual miniatures in them, but I don't judge, so that's not worth much. :->
Bexley
04-27-2012, 12:48 AM
Well, I'm going with the miniature. Don't want to risk it, and though it doesn't add to the scene, it doesn't really detract from it, either.
Peterdita
04-27-2012, 01:27 AM

Sometimes I drink the frufru stuff. What can I say, its good but really sweet to keep up a long night on. Gin is my main choice of fire water, Rum is a solid back up, Vodka is just awesome water when you think about it. Tequilla is trouble, Jager is good, but canot be mixed with gin and redbull or I'll end up breaking stuff. Can't hang with whiskey anymore.
My personal challenge senoir year in high school was to finish a fith of whiskey myself every night. I have completed this challenge on a few occasions, but my body has never forgotten. I have one sip and my mouth waters and my stomach turns. I flash back to Early times and grape koolaid, Jack Daniels and hawain punch, puking on my dads shoes getting my ass kicked at Goose Gossages house.
No more whiskey for Pete. It's Forbidden.
My fiance's in Seattle this weekend for her friends bachelorete party thingy. So I have a full weekend with the house to MYSELF!! Think I'll call the mythical twins over and pass out drunk and hungry on the couch or floor, maybe even bath tub. Only time will tell. One hour and half left of work!

Even if I finished early I probably wouldn't post early, no harm sitting on something for a few days so if I spot something later that's a little weak I can try to fix it. That's one of the interesting challenges with IP, no time to get some distance to assess your work more critically.

still didn't buy a single thing or mini for this contest... (did restock on some plaster to be honest..) slowly my pile of minis is growing smaller :)

Proud of your no purchases Demonn Agram! Not sure plaster counts at all.
I need to get a WIP pic done, but camera must recharge. :-)
After a long day of family Birthday partying, I have the firm idea in hand, and prepping is almost complete. As for my marriage, my husband takes our RoboRally very seriously. As this is his Birthday weekend, I will compromise and scratch build a robot. My hubby did the bin digging for certain bits to use and found them this morning.
Time to break out the paints again! This is gonna be fun! ( I keep telling myself) IRON IRON IRON! Happy Birthday Art!
Dang, I need more sleep...

I am very curious to know how the card shoe fits into either of your ideas! ;->
I must hang my head in shame and confess to PaintMinion that I had to buy something for this one. In my defense, it was something that I had intended to buy from the bins at the last ReaperCon, but none were cast at the time and then I got distracted. My punishment for that distraction was having to buy a whole pack of something when I only need like 15% of what was in it (and that 15% was all I originally intended to buy.)

Well, still haven't bought anything and using up lots of nice bits, but still can't fit in another from the bin of "Want to paint now" stuff, except the Freya for Round 2. Does it count that I convinced my husband to buy a nice huge file for his project, and ended up using it to clean the base of one of my models for this round? That does not count, right?
As for the scotch - my husband drinks that. I think it smells worst than paint thnner (except the Japanese "scotch" I taste tested and liked) and tastes like 20 year old bad mouthwash.
Now - that there bottle of Di Soronno, or that Bailey's there, yeah, that will do the trick. A toast to Art's Birthday! Happy Birthday!

I am very curious to know how the card shoe fits into either of your ideas! ;->
haha!
It fits only in a way that it is used to carry (as I said I'm at my weekend place so I had to take my hobby with me) my other items that do fit into my two ideas :)
and my oppinion is that all the materials and tools for that matter which you buy do not count as buying stuff for IP because those are things which you inevitably run out of at some point and you use for other projects as well. If doesn't matter whether you buy it now, you bought it two months ago or you'll buy it right after IP - you still need them...
well, it's time to cast stuff for my entry - off to work!

Mine was pretty lame actually. I behaved and didn't get that crazy.
Had our first co-ed softball game of the season last night though. That was fun. Played LC field and got lots of action, dropped one fly ball, and thats always really embarassing. But I caught a diving one! We lost 12-7. Considering the fact that three of our players were last minute subs that didn't know how to put on a mit, and our pitcher walked in 6 runs... (WTF? its slow pitch softball man, give them something to hit!!) I think we did pretty well. "The runs" will step up and make a season out of it I promise. I am in a quandary though - I took work in progress pics on my old camera with the macro that works. It has a big data card that does not fit into my new laptop, or my daughter's. It does fit in the main computer. The one Art is playing WoW on right now and it is having probs so may be taken in this week.
There's the camera my Mom gave us that has a smaller card that fits in my laptop - but the macro is broken on it - it just doesn't focus how I need it to.
So ...I need a cheap camera with a macro that works well and the newer smaller data cards that fit my new laptop. I want this for Mother's Day. What camera is good out there!?
So, I promised WIP shots and cannot deliver.

I've painted about 50% of miniatures I want to use for my ITIC entry. I still need to prepare a scenic base for them but that will have to wait. I'm about to go and pick my wife up from work and then drive about 400 km more and have a short holiday. We'll be back on Sunday. which will hopefully give me enough time to finish the work. The only Malifaux-related thing I'm taking with me is the rules manual which I plan to have a look at if I find time.
Anyway, good luck to everyone who is sculpting/painting right now :)

While we may a nerdy bunch, the Pacific Northwest Marine Aquarium Society meeting I attended the other day would give most gaming sessions a run for its money. Fish tank nerds are pretty geeky.
I took a shot of whiskey last night and I'm still alive! I was five beers deep and they convinced me, I didn't want to be left out!! Didn't get the usual mouth watering and stomach turning, so this may be a turning point for me. After about 10+ years away from the stuff, maybe its time to give it another shot. Get it? shot... Thank you , Bexley, but that's to use the little disk with the big slots - I need to use the big disks with the little slots.,
Well, it wouldn't have helped you get photos off your big card, but in the future, you'd use it in place of a big card in your camera, then take the little one out for your laptop.
Wait, your camera doesn't have a cable port? That's how I get photos off my camera.
Back from a week long holiday that was somewhat hampered by various dramas. To top it off, there was barely any conveniently available internet, which was so frustrating. I managed to get online through my phone a bit, but it was slower than the days of dial up.
At least I got to see the theme and have a think about it.
I have to admit, I am really struggling with this round. I have a clutch of ideas that I quite like, but nothing is truly sparking and making me feel I've hit the nail on the head. Being someone who puts a lot of importance on theme, that bothers me.
I've ordered a few models regardless, but I'm yet to hit that magical moment of clarity where the vision hits.
Also, I feel like I got one of the tougher draws this round, what with my opponent being an excellent painter and seemingly abandoning her 'theme is for suckers' mantra during this IP.
I have work to do over the next few days, but I'll start my entry during that time too if I can. If not, the weekend is the time to go at it.

Wait, your camera doesn't have a cable port? That's how I get photos off my camera.
That camera is 13 years old. Any cable it had has been lost in 3 moves, a business sale, etc...actually...I cannot find anyplace on the camera where it would plug in...maybe it doesn't have one? I will have to check the online instruction manual.
I just need the big card to work in my new laptop. My hubby said - oh, sure, I have seen those - when I showed him the device. I refrained from inflicting damage. He has agreed to come with me tomorrow.
13 years old! Yeah, I'd say you need, nay even deserve a new one! How can you get top dollar on your commissions with less than awesome photos? I was annoyed with my camera's performance on last round's pictures and was dreamily mulling whether six years was enough time to warrant an upgrade.

Half the project is coming along nicely. Half the project needs fixing. One third of the project needs a do-over. A quarter of the project is gonna be an Iron drainer. Much of it is sorta done. A lot of it isn't done yet. Some of it may be ditched for time. But still well within The Plan.
It all adds up in my mind...
On a happier note, in honor of the faith our loyal MC has in us, the bits and scratch robot turned out pretty cool. Not the size I wanted, but it will do the job a bit better in some respects than the RoboRally piece I couldn't use. Just waiting for the greenstuff hair to set, add a few details, and it's time to prime the robot!
Most exciting part of the whole project! Iron!
As for the rest of you - I know you have iron in you or you would not have gotten this far. So find out where it's hiding and use it well! We can do this!
Can I have a countdown please?!

I have 0 iron in me at the moment. I don't even think I've touched a bruch since thie whole thing started. Any Iron I had went into making the spreadsheet for this contest. I'm already done :P
It's spring in Portland. I waited through months of rain and cold to see this sunshine dammit. I refuse to sit inside and paint, I go outside and play frisbee and drink pabst with hipsters in the park. All the time admiring the female form and thanking my sunglasses for hiding my eyes. Softball once a week, d&d 2 nights a week, fish tank maintnence and fiddling, wedding planning and job search, I got nothing. Other than a losing softball record, winning tip frisbee record, undefeated bocci ball record and friends with names like "Phoenix" and "Ash". First Friday again in the hood.

Two Guest Judges this round!:
1) Returning is "The critical Commander eYe"
2) My favorite Frenchman, the man who defeated me in Iron Painter but couldn't put me out of the contest, he paints with rats crawling on his shoulders and makes it look good. Our second judge named Eric: Mr. Moavoamoatu!
Sigh -realizing that my project is getting bigger and bigger each round. This time it really is gonna be finished in the last minute or even seconds.
We'll be neck and neck heading towards that finish line. It's very suspenseful whether I'll finish everything as I want it in time. Even if I skip Avengers this weekend and convince someone else to cart my husband around for free comic book day. (He's got poor vision, I'm the only driver in the house.) I am trying to console myself with the idea that if I don't finish it I can call it a WIP for a Gen Con entry. ;-> I'm very happy with the idea and how the scene came together, just wish it had a few less bibs and bobs.

Hello painters,
The octopus-ratcacher-wannabe (as Jim-Supervikey would say) is back but as a guest judge this time. It's nice to see "old faces" and I am glad to see new ones.
You all did a great (paint) job so far with nice entries and clever ideas for some of you. I watched your previous entries and it will be a hard round this time. It's also time for revenge as Bexley beat me last time and I bit the dust. So don't disappoint me mate :Smug_Puppet1:
I won't be unfair or partial because it is FORBIDDEN.
Good luck to all of you. I am looking forward to seing your entries.

I can't offer zombies, but I can bring corpses, blood and guts, psychos, mad scientists and chainsaws to the party. :)

If you haven't already, play around in the menus on your camera. I found some "my colors" presets by chance on my old ixus that had great impact on color saturation and balance. Post-processing in photo editing software can help to a degree too.

Yup. Tried all color/white balance combination - none worked. I think it's actually the natural light that messed things up, believe it or not. When I took my work in progress pics using the poorly lit indoor lighting, the color turned out much better. So I'll give it a try tonight and see how it goes (crossing my fingers)

I ran to my basement just to get a quick peek before going to work and now I'll be late to work. Damn you all! :D
I'll take a closer look and give comments to the latest entries later.
Off to work!
I managed to get in about 5 hours of sleep and am up and about again now. Have to clean the house at some point, but feel really grotty, so not yet. Internet chillage is required for now.
I realised I hadn't commented on the ITIC entries, so I've done that. Much admiration for those still going at entries even though they aren't in the comp proper.
Looking at my entry again now I've slept, it still looks ok, so that's good! :D
I have to say, considering the timeframe involved and the 'restriction' of a theme (it's more of a bonus to get me thinking in different ways to be honest, although I'm sure some would see it as limiting) the entries this round show a monumental amount of skill, technique and creativity. I feel honoured to do battle alongside them.
This competition has cost me four nights sleep in a really big way so far, but I'm so glad that I joined up. The challenge to get the entry finished, being a part of the community, the excitement and nervousness of seeing what my opponent has come up with, the anticipation of another round (hopefully), I'll miss it when it's done. :)

Heh. I've lost a fair amount of sleep as well, not to mention a few days of PTO as well.

Okay so is it just me or this theme just screams: Little girls are TROUBLE? :)
Little girl having a picnic in forbidden area
Little girl longing for toxic fruit
Little girl got kidnapped and hacked by alien for going to forbidden area
Little girl about to be a snack of ancient monster for sneaking in the middle of a ritual
Little girl (okay a bit older) causing 6 deaths in both her and her lover's family
Hmmmm...

I've just checked out all the entries for this round and I am impressed with the creativity and skill of the top 8. The judges will have a hard time choosing the best 4 here.

and, why do your kids have to write essays on current political situation? It just shouldn't be in schools. it's one thing to compare one democracy (like German and French) to another (like the US) - but to write bibliographical essays on a living person STILL in office (or is the essay due in December? :) )
Oh the teacher gives them some spiel about the project being good for them to think about the upcoming elections and responsibilities of voting and that writing the essay the way the teacher wants (a bit different than normal people) is good for them, not to mention giving a speech is a good skill to learn.
I am an English Major. I write essays in my sleep. What the teacher tells them to do is silly and strange. Now, give them a topic they LIKE, create a computer graphic arts poster to go with it and I would not have been tortured. My daughter gives her speech today and turns in the essay - and she is so depressed I want to cry. What a horrible thing to do to us mothers just before Mother's Day!
That said, my daughter is very smart, but very focused on what she wants to be - a graphic artist and computer effects specialist. If they would give kids choices along the lines of their skills and interests, I think they would learn more useful lessons.
oh. Sorry, I didn't realize I was up on the soapbox. I'll just step down now and go see the entries, ok?

Finished commenting. What a great round of entries! If I hadn't already been knocked out I'd be getting it now for sure. It's going to be really interesting to see who advances to the next round.

You folks are unbelieveably good! Its really cool to see what you come up with in this time frame around the theme. You all did really well. It sucks that some of you will have to be eliminated, but thats the name of the game.
Judges have their cards and I'll be updating you as I recieve the scores back.
GOOD LUCK!

I just don't get that in an ellection year a school (teacher) can give an assignement to students on one candidate while leaving the other (whoever he is) out of it. School should be without politics. it should be there to open your mind about everything around you, even politics but not to take sides whichever they are...
that's just my 2 cents...
anyway, when are the results coming?

not a bit older. Juliet was 13 when she died. I believe some of the girls in other pieces in round 4 are even older than Juliet...

Sorry, I did not mean to give that impression - the kids can choose what candidate to do a 5 page essay on (bio, educ, career, 2 issues), then do a 2 minute speech with visual aid that is not a person or place. I cannot imagine the pressures on a kid in a divided household. Our rule is, we do our own research and make our own decisions and do not talk about politics, unless it is vague and an obvious agreement situation. In a large clan, these rules are essential for peace. Have you seen what is happening in Wisconsin? On one side, my Aunt is pro-Walker, on the other side are all my friends. I keep very silent. Peace is achieved as long as we all respect that everyone has a right to make their own political decisions.
Anyway - great entries all, I have a couple favorites and do not want to go up against any of the people in this round, much less the top 4! But I love it because it pushes me to be better! IRON!

Really? No zombies? Hmmm, perhaps that was a zombie cow I saw...? Wow, better be careful though, or the next theme might be zombies just to keep the judges happy..

I'll do my best to post the scores tomorrow or on saturday.
I watched the entries : no zombies but awesome entries in this round..I won't tell you which one is my favourite but some of them are trully amazing (and curiously correspond to the games I play and the miniatures I am painting these days).

Thank you for validating my husband's opinion on my piece. I should've listened to him more :)
I think you could make an argument that mummies are the original zombies? ;->
