With the Halloween and Harvest season right around the corner, it is once again time to kick things off with, to date, our most popular contest, The Rotten Harvest!

Round about the paint pot go. On the palette throw
royal blue and blood red. Thirty-seven Days of Dread;
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and paint pot bubble.

The contest will run from September 25th through October 31st and during that time competition entries can be submitted. At the close of the contest, voting will commence for one week where you will be allowed to vote anonymously through the Wyrd forum software as well as leave comments and critique which we have found our previous entrants have greatly enjoyed. After the voting, announcements will be made and prizes sent to the winners, along with the random prizes that we give away with every contest.

The specific rules for the contest can be found on the Wyrd Miniatures website on the forums under 'Wyrd Painting Contest: Rules and Information'. I would really like to stress folks to read the rules, as folks tend to miss them for some reason and they end up misunderstanding the contest, the theme or disqualify themselves.

Due to the sheer number of people that have entered unedited photographs in the past we will no longer do any editing for you. There are many free photo resizing programs out there. Wyrd staff will attempt to notify anyone who's pictures were deleted due to size or for any reason, but can not guarantee notification.

The categories for the contest are:

Witches and Warlocks Spellcasters of all sorts, from high fantasy, modern day dabbler to the far sci-fi future. If they carry a wand, cast a spell or even have a hint of mysticism to them, this is the category for them.

Not Quite Dead Yet Still stumbling around after all the major organ functions have shut down? Have a beef with the living? This category is for the Undead, or as they like to be called 'Living Impaired'.

Things that go Bump in the Night Creatures, critters, monsters and other things that have a tendency towards anti-social behavior and prowl the night looking for victims. Caution, here be Monsters!

The Trick or the Treat This is our catch-all category as there are some miniatures that are just right for the theme but just don't seem to fall into any other category. Zombie Hunters, pumpkin characters and I'm sure several miniatures I never would have even contemplated.

The Harrowing Harvest A diorama with two or more miniatures locked in combat, or something as equally disturbing.

Wyrd Miniatures will be supplying prizes and gift certificates for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of each category, except for Best of Show and Best Base or Diorama as that category has only the one winner. We'll also be offering a 'Best of Wyrd' manufacturers prize for the best Wyrd Miniatures entry, which is a $100USD gift certificate on top of any other prizes or categories you may win.

WYRD PAINTING CONTEST RULES AND INFO

Every contest needs rules and this one is no different! Pay attention please as we don't want any hard feelings or disqualifications due to rule bending/breaking. If you have a question, ASK!

In order to participate in the contest you must create an account on the Wyrd Miniatures website in order to submit an entry and to vote in the polls which will decide the winners of the contest. You are encouraged to enjoy the forums and participate, but it is NOT required in any fashion in order to enjoy the Wyrd Painting Contest.

When participating in the competition, you must submit a miniature that is in line with the current THEME that is being hosted. There will be several themes throughout the year so if one theme doesn't catch your interest, perhaps the next one will.

The work must be yours alone, no passing off of someone elses work as your own. You CAN submit a miniature that someone else has converted or sculpted for you though - just not painted, based .. etc.

You are allowed to submit MULTIPLE entries to the contest. As many as you can paint, you can submit though you can only place once per category (you can win in multiple categories, just once per category). Please, when submitting though, indicate which categories you are submitting for as well as the manufacturer and name of the miniature. Each miniature can only be in ONE category for the competition. I reserve the right to place a miniature in the proper category if it is not stated or is 'misplaced'.

The miniature can be from any manufacturer, or a custom miniature you have created yourself as long as it lies within the current theme. Conversions are allowed and encouraged.

The miniature cannot have been displayed in any form elsewhere on the internet or published mediums such as magazines. All contest entries will be displayed anonymously so as to give no one person an unfair advantage (this isn't a popularity contest) and thus there can be no signatures or watermarks upon them. No announcing on forums, webpage, blogs or any other type of medium about the type of miniature that you will be painting, nor concept sketches.

The categories for the contest will likely change from theme to theme as well as the possible number of categories should the subject matter allow for it.

When photographing and editing your pictures, please submit them in .JPG (JPEG) format, with a file size of no larger than 300k. Photographs can be no larger than 800 pixels wide. I'm not much worried about length as it will allow you to fit in angles of the photograph. If you send me a photograph that doesn't fall within the limits prescribed above, I will ask that you fix this as otherwise your entry will not be accepted.

Miniatures can be submitted any time during the contest though none will be showcased till the day after the final submissions date. Submissions will be accepted up till Midnight, EASTERN U.S. time, on the closing date of the currently running contest. Submissions after the cut off date will NOT be accepted, no exceptions.

In order to submit an entry for the contest, go to the current contest gallery and upload your entry. As the gallery is set for moderation, your submission will NOT show up immediately but will instead wait for me to review and edit accordingly. When submitting your contest entry, please take the time to describe the miniature and its manufacturer as well as any other contest notes you wish me to review before editing.

::- Direct Gallery Link - :: (http://wyrd-games.net/photopost/)

At the closing date of the contest, the submissions will be published to the proper contest gallery, anonymously, and the voting will begin.

In order to vote, you must be a registered member of the website.

A poll with your choice of winners will be presented to you where you select your favorites, one poll for each category. While viewing the contest submissions in the gallery, you will be allowed to leave comments and critique on the entry. Please try to be constructive with these comments, as they will be published publically once the voting is completed!

Voting will be open for seven days immediately after polls are posted for the contest.

Winners of each category will receive prizes and random entrants will be selected for the 'Random Schmuck' prize. Please, do not request a particular item, as that is the quickest way to not receive it.

Should there be any questions, or if anything is unclear, PLEASE take the time to ask in the forums as that is the quickest way to receive clarification on a subject as well as bring it to the attention of others.

Quick question about how the theme works...so, for a particular category, such as Witches and Warlocks, I don't have to make them more Halloween like to fit the theme? I just need a spellcaster, period.

Yay, this is my favorite contest of the year. A plea to the forum members to submit and vote for this contest. Painting contests are the foundation of these forums. Plus its always fun to compete with some of the great painters on these forums ( Peterdita your certainly one of em).

Now i just have to find a way to get through the commissions on my desk....

Awesome, I think I might be in for this.
Good excuse to bump the malifuax models to the top of the paint chain.

I echo the question on pg 1 though, do the models need to be converted to a halloween theme? I'm thinking maybe some subtle theme on basing, but not wanting to tweak the core model(s) too much... is that cool or should I start making tiny boomsticks and candy?

Cheers.

TO THOSE ASKING ABOUT "THEME"

Mini's do not have to be "halloweeny or converted to be halloweeny in any way. However, this is sort of a 'seasonal' contest and the minis that tend to do well, fit within the specific category they are sumbitted and usually have some sort of autumn/fall/halloween flair included. I reccomend checking out previous years entries to get a feel for it.

Awesome, I can now see the previous years galleries, (i too was getting the permission issue this morning) and can see the basic theme ideas now.

I'm also thinking its ok to use non Wyrd parts/whole models. Seems kinda cool they are flexible here. While I am planning some Wyrd models for my first go (its only polite right?) I have some ideas for puppets that a certain ex french model company fulfil nicely.

(moved this question over from the main sticky of the rules as this thread looks more appropriate). I’ll be brave and do this painting thing! My enjoyment of Malifaux is about 75% building and painting, so what is the harm? I’ve been watching these forums for months by the way but this is my first post :)

Question – is there a limit on the size of the base for the non diorama categories? Could I for example put a mini normally meant for a 30mm base on a 50mm so I had more room for scenic basing?

What proportion of the basing needs to be made by the painter? I assume small details can be purchased (jugs, etc) but purchasing a pre-made 'art base' would disqualify you?

Thanks!

There are no limitations in the on base sizes
yes, you could put a 30mm on a 50mm
As far as premade bases go, you can use whatever you want. You could for example enter a mini with a precast resin base or use the Wyrd inserts. Nothing against that. I'm not sure what a premade 'art base' is but as long as you paint it, everythings good.
You may want to read the rules on the first post again. If you don't see it mentioned then its fine.

Would taking two small models that belong on 30mm bases and putting them on a 50mm base count as a single entry? Or does that upgrade it to the WORST/SMALLEST diorama ever.

I want to put 2 models on 1 base as they are very small and they come 2 to a pack so ill be getting 2 anyways. Hope I can just enter it as a single model because it really wont be diorama size or quality.

Cheers,
T

folks, I would reccomend you read the rules on the first page. If you still cannot make a reasonable determination on whether or not your entry is allowed, I'd read them again and look through old galleries of Rotten Harvest to get an idea of what creative things people have done. If it doesn't say NO in the rules, then you should be fine.

My experience with Wyrd contest over the years is they are meant to be fun and a way of bringing the painting community together. Not for DQ'ing people for some technicallity.

Just paint something up and submit it. :P

Someone else was kind enough to direct me to this since I missed it. I have a few recent projects I'd like to toss in there. Need to borrow my friend and his camera or else it becomes cell phone pics for me.

How many angles should we include for a miniature? Just one or as many as we think we need to capture what makes it a cool paintjob? (say, 2-3?)

Hi, I am a long time lurker who finally decided to give the contest a go this time around as I had a specific model I thought would make a good entry. So anyways, I wound up submitting two entries. However, after I upload the pictures it says I don't have permission to view the galleries I've submitted the pictures into. I realize this is to keep the minis under wraps until the voting starts, but is there any way I can check under my account settings or something just to make sure the pics went through OK? Since the cutoff date is supposed to be very strict and the galleries don't go live until after the cutoff it would be nice if I could be sure my pics went through w/o issue. :)

Peterdita

RH V is an old gallery.

I'ts very dubious that zKotte is looking at the correct images, but maybe there is some sort of entitlement glitch. I can't view the gallery. Either way, If you submitted an image and you got the "You don't have permission to view this" message, you should be good. Just make sure you're image is up when they release the gallery.

I was working on some of mine last night and I'm enjoying them. Can't wait to see all the stuff everyone else comes up with. Creative folks out there and always some nice and clever work.

Good luck finishing up everyone! Last weekend...

I finally uploaded my entries (tried a few times so there may be a few identical entries from me - sorry for the trouble whoever gets to arrange everything in the gallery) but I still can't see the gallery. From what I read on the previous pages it seems like it'll be open when the voting starts so I guess my entries are somewhere there. Still, it would be nice to be able to check if I didn't mess anything up and my entries are there ;)

Currently in there deleting extras, moving to appropriate categories, etc.

As I always do, I'll put it up for a day to see if someones didn't get in after a quick look (which I can also verify through the gallery log), add any thing may have gotten missed, then take it from there.

In reality this gallery may not open for a day or two folks. Depending on how many entries there are and how many Nathan's already moved around it takes a bit to get them all sorted. He has to rename all the files so there aren't names in them, delete duplicates, move entries around into the right categories and even possibly delete any that snuck in after the gallery was closed.

Anticipations a bitch though aint it?

I thought I remember reading that if you were the big winner of a previous Wyrd contest you were forcibly graduated to another category? That's stated here: http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13179

To keep the contests fun for all. All past BEST OF SHOW winners and Wyrd Staff can only enter the MALIFIX MASTERS category.

I couldn't tell you if that's the current rule set or not.

WYRD PAINTING CONTEST RULES AND INFO

The miniature cannot have been displayed in any form elsewhere on the internet or published mediums such as magazines. All contest entries will be displayed anonymously so as to give no one person an unfair advantage (this isn't a popularity contest) and thus there can be no signatures or watermarks upon them. No announcing on forums, webpage, blogs or any other type of medium about the type of miniature that you will be painting, nor concept sketches.

So I had a question about this. I haven't posted the pictures anywhere online, but a guy from my local hobby story saw my finished result for Rotten Harvest 2011 and said that he would go online and vote for me. A couple other friends were planning on doing the same after seeing my entry.

Is this permissible or should I ask them not to vote?

I hadn't really thought about it until I was rereading the rules. I figured that the fair thing to do would be to ask them not to vote, but I wanted to get a more official answer.

Sorry to be such a rule stickler; I just want to keep things fair.

Peterdita
11-02-2011, 01:21 PM
I would not show any of your work, in person, or online until the contest has completed going forward. It's supposed to be a secret, and showing your work to people who are active board members or voters in essence breaks the spirit of the rule.

At this point, I would ask your firends to kindly vote for the minis that they think deserve their votes, not because they know you personally.

bjorkgnu
11-02-2011, 01:25 PM
You can tell them to vote for my entry, Sk3mo. It's the only fair thing to do. :)

I got one in, although I'll be putting the "new" mini haloMike added into the Monster category...with the 9.9 I scored over at CMoN I think I might have a shot. If it's good there, it's good anywhere, right?

Regarding the Masters category, I've not seen that enacted as of yet. It was originally put in with last year's RH contest, but Peterdita was not separated out even though he was top dog for the summer contest. I don't know if there is a minimum number of entrants to open the category. Pete and I will be in, but I'm not sure if any of the other previous BIS winners are entering this year.

Sk3mo, I'd agree with Pete on this. Certainly, it can be difficult to paint something in total seclusion; most of us will ask an opinion of a spouse or friend or a painter at the local game shop. I will occasionally ask advice or opinion from painters I admire via e-mail or PM. I've not asked them specifically to vote for me, though. If they do go ahead and vote, I guess I would ask that they vote honestly regarding there favorites (not to say those are exclusive of yours, necessarily). Of course, this is just my very humble opinion. I'd wait for the boss to show an official ruling.

That's a lot of zombie hookers... do you have them already lined up or will you need to acquire them after you win? Or is this some sort of campaign promise that get conveniently forgotten?

Bah, you think the waiting is bad now, wait until after you've had a chance to enjoy, peruse, ogle, and comment on all the entries (i.e., 24 hours after the galleries and polls open). Then you've still got another 6 days to wait for the polls to close, and then even more time for the results to be tallied.

You kids have it easy. Back in my day we had to wait for painting galleries to open while buried neck-deep in a nest of fire ants with our noses smeared with honey.
