View Full Version : GenCon 2012 Master of Malifaux tournament...

Hey all,
I know its now a year away, but just thought i'd bring up the idea of putting together a group of us to represent Europe at GenCon next year.
There is already some competitive banter on the forums about who is going to win http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24044
Although I plugged the UK players as giving them a run for there money, it would be good if we could get some strong European competition as a whole for the title of Master of Malifaux.
As the cost of going to GenCon will not be cheap, I thought i'd raise the idea now, and see who might be interested in going...will prob be looking at saving £75 a month between now and then to cover cost of flights and hotel, plus any spending money. I wanna go either way just to experience the biggest gaming convention in the world!
Anyway, give it some thought and lets see if we can get a small group of us together to show them Yanks how you really play Malifaux! :thumb:
Edit 24 August: Have spoken to Zee at Wyrd HQ and he can confirm the following for us:
1. It will be a 40+ person tournament.
2. Should be fully painted crews only. Games likely to be 40 SS Scraps and probably be Domination format.
So plenty of opponents and good sized games.
Edit 26 August: Have now started the ball rolling with more details and travel/accommodation arrangements, more to follow. In the meantime, you might find it interesting to check out the following PodCast - The D6 Generation podcast episode 81.
Edit 5 September: To keep this first post from getting too long, please refer to my post on page 2 of this thread (post number 15)

Excellent. If we can get just 5 people from Europe to attend, we will have a noticeable presence, but the more the better!..
Will mention it on the 10th then, cheers.

Hell Yeah!!! Count us in!!! Group of about 4-6 that I know will be mad for this! We represented at gencon a few years ago in the l5r tourneys as Clan Cymru and we went down a storm. We had loads of Americans buying us beers and generally taking us under their wing. Think they felt sorry for me because I turned up to my first game wearing just my welsh flag :) but they seem to love foreigners on tour. If you don't mind a load of crazy welsh malifaux players jumping ship with ya, keep me posted. Can say that 4 of us will be definates and another 2 possibles. Sounds awesome dudes

Sounds like a dam fine idea. We don't get much opportunity to socialise with other malifaux players And this seems like a great way for us to spread our malifaux seed. Thanks a lot dude and don't forget to keep us posted :)

**Update
Hi all, just a quick update for you all...I am in negotiation with the Official Travel Organiser for GenCon....currently discussing likely costs and what can be included in a group booking. More details to follow but for now heres a heads up of some of the things we may be able to take advantage of...
1. All transport, from Origin Airport onwards and back to be arranged for us (regardless of your origin airport/country) NB, you will need to ensure you have a valid passport.
2. All hotel bookings and transport in America to be arranged for us (and this is likely to include a discounted Hotel booking for the hotel that GenCon will be held in!)
3. Welcome dinner, the first day we get there we all meet up for dinner in the evening, again organised by the GenCon official travel organisers, cost for this will be included in the package.
4. The organisers who I am negotiating with know the Wyrd owners and are looking to negotiate sponsorship/involvement from Wyrd during our visit. This is purely a potential bonus, not part of the deal and not guaranteed at this stage, but if we are lucky and Wyrd are onboard, could include anything from 1 or more of the Wyrd crew joining us for dinner on the welcome evening, to possible freebies for travelling all the way from Europe and supporting Wyrd at GenCon. Watch this space!....
5. Possible GenCon related events such as a trip around the Dungeon...more details to follow...
Hopefully that has wetted a few appetites...Regardless of what may or may not be included in the group package for all going to GenCon together, the main thing will be we all get to meet up, experience GenCon, and show those Americans (and Canadians!) how we Europeans play malifaux!!

Ofcourse! I am hoping for as many people from as many different countries as possible.
Also worth noting the more people we can get on board, the better the price for all of those attending and the more likely we will have support from Wyrd....
I will update the first post to include the names of those who have put their names forward as hoping to attend.
As for price, the first post mentions saving about £75 a month til Gencon (so around £900). I appreciate this isnt a small figure, but the biggest cost will be flights. Again, if we can get a good number of people attending the travel organiser is hoping to negotiate a group discount with the flight operator.

arround £900 is something i can live with, it's a lot better than the €1000 to fly to US of A (this is wihtout costs of hotel etc)

Great! Well as it stands, we are waiting on the airlines to offer prices for that time of year. They only tend to advertise costs 10 months or so in advance, so the travel organiser is hoping to negotiate costs in the next month or so, then that being the biggest cost, we can give a more accurate idea of cost. But the organiser said my estimate of £900 should be around the right amount. Certainly a lot better than €1000 for just flights!

You know you want to mate!!... come join us..If you can convince James to join in (im chatting with him this weekend about it), then you can share journey to the airport, and share a room with him... those are all things that should be built into the costs...to help keep this open to as many people as possible..the plan is not to price anyone out, but there is obviously a limit to how cheap it can be made as the flights are the big hitter

Hi all,
Just a quick note to say I should hopefully have a a great deal more info on this by the end of the month, negotiations still in progress and draft itinerary being put together...but just a couple of things you might be interested to know...
1. Hope to have some interesting news from Wyrd shortly regarding support from them for us European lot making the effort to go over to US for this as a group....watch this space
2. I am hoping that, further to negotiations with Battlefoam and Wyrd, a couple of those taking part in this delegation will hopefully (subject to this being agreed) win a Wyrd/Battlefoam bag just for coming along..
So those are just a couple of potential highlights for those coming along for this trip to the worlds biggest gaming convention and the most sought after tournament of the annual internation calendar (after Neverata's GT ofcourse :adore: lol)
I will be posting here full information in due course...
Finally, if your name isnt on the first post of this thread, and you want to come along and join in this outing, please PM me, or post here to let me know and I will add you on the list.
Many thanks

Hi Everyone,
I now have a further update on this venture so lets jump straight to it..the outline itinerary is as follows:
Tour Details:
Day 1 – Tuesday August 14th
Tour members will be arriving throughout the day and everyone will have transportation arranged to take them directly to the hotel. A Geek Nation Tours representative will be waiting to greet you when you arrive. We will have a leisurely, relaxing free day to explore the area. Depending on your arrival time and your interests this can include taking in a couple of Indianapolis’ museums, which are just a short walk away from the hotel. Join us in the evening as we get to know each other over dinner and even get a few games in with the gang from Kentucky Fried Gamers. We will dine and game at two of the favourite destinations for local gamers. First, we will head to the RAM (http://www.theram.com/) to eat with the KFG crew and then move to Scotty’s Brewhouse (http://www.scottysbrewhouse.com/locations/indianapolis-downtown/) for some gaming.
We will be staying at the beautiful new JW Marriott Indianapolis Hotel (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/indjw-jw-marriott-indianapolis/). The hotel is connected to, and just a few quick minutes walk away from, the Indianapolis Convention Center.
Day 2 – Wednesday August 15th
Today we will be continuing our exploration of Indianapolis. We will take in the Indiana State Museum, walk the canal and even explore the Mass Ave. Arts District. Here we will see live theatre, galleries and boutique shops. Our sore feet will get a reprieve at the end of the day with a shuttle back to the hotel.
For those that want to stay closer to the hotel, the KFG crew has invited us to game with them all day long - just make sure you remember to stop in time for our welcome dinner!
In the evening, join us for the welcome dinner, which takes place at our hotel. It will be time to listen to our guest speakers from the D6 Generation Podcast and from Megan Culver, Director of Gen Con Marketing. Fun will be had by all as we discuss how to get the best out of the Gen Con experience. We will be treated to Gen Con advice that is sure to be of interest to the newbie or veteran alike. Share a drink and mingle with the D6 crew, Megan and the other tour participants to discuss all things Gen Con... Megan will also be handing out our badges so we will be all set once the convention begins! No ticket pickup line or postage fees – just roll out of bed on Thursday right into the con.
After dinner, we will continue our pre-Gen Con gaming with the Kentucky Fried Gamers as we return to either the RAM or Scotty’s, depending on your gaming tastes. This evening will be a bit more structured, game-wise; as we have the pros run our games. They will give us a taste of everything from roleplaying to boardgaming to card games and miniature battles. We might even have a local brew or two!
http://www.geeknationtours.com/admin/FileUpload/pics/0242_12117_8_07_GEN3%20(2).JPG
Day 3 – Thursday August 16th
As we will already have our badges, we will be able to jump right into the Gen Con goodness! At this point you will be ready for the spectacle that is Gen Con. If you have any questions at all our Geek Nation representative will be there at the convention with you. As a matter of fact, he will even walk to the convention with you to ensure your Gen Con experience proceeds without a hitch. We will be starting off our Gen Con experience early as we head off to the opening ceremonies at 10:45 a.m. just outside the exhibit hall.
We will meet each night to regale each other with our experiences, the games we played or saw, and to share other Gen Con “war stories”. Past Geek Nation participants agree that our nightly gatherings are a wonderful part of the convention experience - a time where you can get to know other geeks and maybe hear a great suggestion or two on what to do the following day. You can join us every night or you can do your own thing, it’s entirely up to you. Geek Nation Tours wants you to have the most freedom as possible to “Geek Out”, so our meetings will be completely optional – you can come and go as you please.
Day 4 – 6 – Friday August 17th through Sunday August 19th
You now have three days to completely geek out! You are free to experience Gen Con as you want, though there will always be a Geek Nation Tours representative on hand to deal with any questions or concerns you may have. Join a role playing game, demo a new boardgame, or get your picture taken with a cosplayer. Your schedule should be all set at this time but you can always choose to head off to Gen Con’s boardgame area to grab a game with some friends. Lost your companion? Don’t worry – you can always find his exact location with Facebook “Places”. We will be there geeking out as well, having a great time and planning the evening’s get-together where we can recharge and prepare for the next day of Gen Con fun.
Our Geek Nation representative will be leading groups to see the Hickman’s Killer Breakfast, Terrorworks, the D6 Gen’s “Play by Mob” event, and the famous “True Dungeon”. Be sure to sign up for any or all of these events – they are going to be a great!
Sunday night we will be getting together for our farewell dinner. Join us at Scotty’s for one last meal, a drink and a farewell to Gen Con.
Day 7 Monday August 20th
Today we will transfer to the airport and head home.
End of Tour.
I have also received the following information from Geek Nation Tours who have been doing the hard graft to put this together:
Hello Ashley,
I thought I would send you another email letting you know the following:
1) I have a special promotion for your group. If you book asap I will raffle off 1 Battlefoam Custom Malifaux bags once the bookings are complete. One lucky person in your group will receive the bag prior to the tour to make sure all of their minis get to Gen Con safe and sound.
2) I am talking to the Kentucky Fried Gamers and they tell me they will have something arranged for you on the Tuesday and Wednesday nights prior to Gen Con... It will involve playing Malifaux at the RAM or Scotty's pub :)
3) I am still contacting Wyrd and hope to have something on this front for you shortly..

Just to add to this, Geektours have quoted $1309.6 for flights to Indy (I presume Wednesday in & Monday out). If booked in the UK (with 1 stop) it looks like they are $150 cheaper (likely Delta don't do this price if booking within the USA).
I've emailed GT to let them know, and I'm sure we'll (well, Ash ;)) will look at this closer to actual booking

I've spent a little time today getting prices and I'm getting around £775 as the cheapest so far (but thats with me planning on flying out of Manchester).
TBH I've no idea if this is cheap or expensive as taxes are making up a good £290 of this!!
Does anyone know if flights usually go up or down as the departure time gets closer?

Price changes are a lottery - cheaper as it gets closer but more expensive as seats get booked. So empty plane closer to the time is cheap, full plane close to the time is expensive.
I too have acquired a deposit :)
Hello all and thank you all for your deposits. I can't wait to get to Gen Con..Very excited indeed.
Air is always problematic you never know when it goes down. The airline can put on a sale when they please and if you have a ticket already then there is no refund. The issue however is normally it gets more expensive as you move toward the date.
Don't wait too long...unless you are a gambler...

Hello I just moved the final to January 25th. However if you get the deposit in prior to this time I will be more than happy to extend the deadline for your group. Ashley and I can work something out that works for all parties.

Can someone set everything out or should we book on our own?

So due to various reasons, there's a vague possibility I could be going to this. I'm not 100% sure it's worth my one holiday of the year to go and play toy soldiers...someone convince me.
Sure I can step up from that...
As a geek you really have not experianced anything as cool as a con. There are tonnes of stuff to see and buy and you get to try loads of games or all descriptions.
As for being on the tour you get to hang out with people that love the same things you do - that have a common vocabulary and that you will instantly bond with.
You will come back home with tonnes of great memories, new friends and maybe a few new games and/or miniatures in your hands.
It really is an experiance.
My job is to make sure you have the very best of experiances and I will guide you through the registration and other processes.
Enough?

Yep it's me. Come to ruin hobbies on another continent.
Really looking forward to getting some games in against you guys. :)
Well, that is both good and sad news. Good to see Leggo and Mythicfox! Sad that it may only be 2 representing all of the UK at Gencon. On the bright side, there is no threat of a UK invasion of the top tables. I hear Mythicfox really isn't that good at Malifaux..... :slap:
On a serious note, as the date gets closer let us know your plans. I certainly would love to meet up for some beer and malifaux while your at Gencon!

Absolutely Bill, it'd be great to get a game or two in, and make you eat those words :)

Hello Hello!
I just returned from my Star Trek and Gen Con tours and had a blast... We even had the honor of having Eric and Casey from Wyrd at our Welcome Dinner.... What a great couple! They were awesome to the participants and the Q&A worked out great! They even demo'ed their new Evil Baby Orphanage game for us prior to Gen Con...
Thank you again for all the support :) and hope to see you in 2013
