I hate to be the first nay-sayer, but the avatar sculpt just doesn't do it for me. At first I thought it was because the arms are too static, but then it dawned on me that the wings are waaaaaaaaaaay too small. I think if I get it in the future I'd be chopping them off and replacing them with something with a far greater wingspan.

The alternate sculpt is brilliant though :)

The rock under the front paw is part of the sculpt, the rest of the rocks of the base were added by our painter. The entire sculpt is being released as metal.

On the avatar, I was hoping for something just scary and beastly or impressive. To me, that miniature is the stupidest looking piece of $$$$$$$$, I've ever seen in a miniature game. I actually regret buying marcus now. I mean damn, that miniature is retarded. Just my two cents' -shawn

Speculation:

It's still got that staff, so I'd imagine it'll still have that attack, but will prolly gain a claw attack of a sorts.

Flight? I'd hope so (though as people have mentioned, the wings don't seem to be able to support the form).

Terrifying? Possibly.

Super Stare Down? I mean, look at those eyes. Any beast should recognize Marcus as the alpha, and simply forfeit. I'm picturing: (0) When an opposing beast within LOS takes an action other than walk or pass, it must make a Terrifying check or fall back. The check would be fairly small, (8 or 9) since it's so powerful otherwise, not that I know the scaling the avatars are supposed to have with regards to the power of the rest of the game. Interesting thought.

Lose scout? I dunno... Not that he'd need it with flight, of course

Well I was trying to decide between putting together a Marcus crew or a Rasputina one. This helps me decide. Definitely 'Tina for me! The alt sculpt is alright although I actually prefer the current one but the avatar is nothing like I pictured he would be. There's nothing wrong with them they're just not ticking the boxes for me though. Show us Rasputina next please! :D

As for Marcus, I don't like either. The alternative looks like I might change my mind when I see him in the flesh but I'm not keen on his face or pose, crouched like he was hunting/prowling would have been much more evocative IMO.

The Avatar........ sorry Wyrd, I love you dearly but this has just turned out looking goofy as hell. The pose is weird, I'm not sure what he's supposed to be doing other than showing off his manly chest. The face is plain goofy, the wings are tiny and the base looks, well, lazy. I think it would look better without the random pile of slate. I'm very surprised because all the other Avatars so far (artwork and minis) have been absolutely stunning! I like this concept for Marcus but I just feel so much more could have been done with the idea.

Chimera in a classic sense he is neither, because that'd be half-goat, half-lion, with serpent for a tail, 3 heads and wings.

Sphinx or Mantygre perhaps? They normally don't have human torsos though and I think Mantygre would be wingless too. On the other hand Mantygre is horned, and Sphinx is not (and often a woman).

Malifaux isn't the place for our human myths, I think. :D

Not really. There was a smiley = it was a half-serious observation about Marcus not being a classic mythical beasts.

Then, if we go by the fluff, Malifaux is the place that gave inspiration to our myths and legends, which still doesn't make it an exact fit.

A melting pot would be a place inspired by our myths and legends perhaps (which arguably it is as a game), but then it still isn't the place you can apply the mythical with any dose of certainty.

In other words, Marcus is his own creature. :D

I don't think as many people woould be upset about him turning into a chimera if the miniature didn't look terrible. His face looks like garbage, and alot of the details on his body aren't so hot either. And I think most people were hoping for something dark and wicked beastly rather than a big giant goofy looking horse man with wings. I think I was pulling for a werewolf with viscera hanging off his claws and teeth. Honestly, I don't even wanna put this miniature on the table.

Alt - Think this looks great...has a very feral look about him. Think I would paint him up a deep purple with yellow eyes to get a panther look going.
Avatar- Not so sure on this one. I like parts of the model but not so hot on others. I would really like a better shot of his snake tail which is the coolest part of the model for me. I have to say, something is going to have to be done about the pose of his arms. I can't get the image of him water skiing with a rope around the middle of the staff out of my head :) I would probably try and convert the pose so he is holding the staff over his head personally.

I never liked Marcus much (miniature and fluff-wise), but I prefer the original to the alternate version, and the avatar form... well, it looks like an homage to Warhammer Fantasy 4th-5th Edition. I think it's a lost opportunity as the model could've been so much more with a different pose and different wing placement, while keeping to the chimera concept.

After Johan and Lelu, my disliking of this Marcus leads me to believe that either a) I just cannot associate these "manly" men with Malifaux in a positive way due to some misguided preconception of mine that all that is Malifaux needs to have a certain finesse to it, or that b) some Wyrd sculptors are just having problems sculpting good male models. They are doing a great job on beautiful women and fat or slim men though.

I'm not so much into GW these days, but they are making some good miniatures from time to time, and the Marcus Avatar could have learned a lot from this one.

When I first saw the Marcus Avatar, I was immediately struck by how similar it looked to an early-2000s Daemon Prince conversion my (at the time) early-teenaged brother made.

The impression still hasn't changed, unfortunately. It just looks goofy, somehow, and while it definitely shows the chimerical workings of the Order, it just doesn't do anything.

Likewise, I much prefer the original Marcus to the alternate.

I realize that all of this is just me throwing my Internet Opinion (tm) around, since I have absoultely no intention whatsoever of playing Marcus, at least as long as his rules remain as poor as they are and his crew remains so visually disparate.

I think the alternate is amazing! 'nuff said.

I'm back and forth about the avatar. Stellar concept but I get what some others are saying about the pose being a bit too static.

That said, I also think it is an inspiring piece to the painter side of me and I'm going to break my brain trying to paint the $$$$$$$$ out of that!! Ideas started flowing through my mind as soon as I saw it, if I can pull off half of what I'm thinking I'll be very happy.
