Hello paint fans! We have had quite a bit of excitement already in just the first round of Season Three! I am very excited to see how this will play out.

Please review the rules http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?t=1983.

The only change is that from now on, any TIE will be broken by the highest score in THEME. That still being tied will go to the judges, and failing that to break the gridlock, the ole trusty coin toss.

The DEADLINE is Easter Sunday, April 8th, 6pm IOWA (central standard) time. If your entry is not in by then, you are done.

The Match-ups

These are randomly drawn, one at a time...every pair becomes a matchup. I am doing these as I type:

TAB Studiovs. Orky Dave
Maestro vs. Iff
Dr EvilMonki vs cdukino
matty1001 vs. Stupidcow
Ericj vs. Wren
vincegamer vs. Zeke
Thryth vs. Jubilee
Beelzebrush vs Mosch

The theme.....

PAINT IT BLACK!

No not the Rolling Stones song...You must USE THE COLOR BLACK on your mini. How you go about doing this is up to you. Main feature or accent color?...again up to you. Remember though, you are trying to impress the judges. I am sure they will not only be looking for the color, but also how well that color is represented!!

Only EIGHT painters will come out of this with a VICTORY...the rest get sent packing.

Will TAB Studios take advantage of the 'give me another chance' prize?
Will vincegamer continue to dominate his opponents?
Can DrEvilmonki shake off his weiner title long enough to stop the power that is cdukino?
Will Mosch continue to surprise?
Does reigning champ Wren ever get a break? First TAB, now EricJ! Being the champion sure isn't easy...
Will callumrice continue to smacktalk?
Can IFF win without the benefit of a coin-helper?

Find out these answers and many more in the next round of the IRON PAINTER which begins...

NOW!

Thought you had seen the back of me eh Maestro? You wish.

This time I aint supporting the cow, Ive set myself the challenge of bringing Maestro crashing out in round 2. By my sheer smacking he will GIVE the round 3 ticket to Iff.

Im looking forward to evilweenies matchup, I got to tell you. Thatll be a good one.

As for Maestro, Ill see you later....

Ok good point Malebolgia, but I got a better one. You ready boys and girls?

Prepare, cos its good. Real juicy.

You ready now?

Yes kids, VIKE messed up his counting.... again!! Ha ha, someone buy him a calculator for christ sake!

My scores,

Skya 11.5, Duende 16.5, Ritual 15, FF 15. Tell me what that adds up to.

58!

Why then is my score recorded as 57? My god, this is unreal.

Put me through on unfair counting merits please Vike, you know you want to.

URG!!

Ok...I really did my best....I checked and rechecked all my figures....I see why I have Callum's wrong...

So sorry....please forgive me.

When I do the scores, I have a tally sheet that I have made up. Each contestant has 4 judges places and I copy the scores from my PM to my sheet...then I do the score calculations.

I wrote down a "6" for your overall from Frustrated Father, when it should have been a "7"....Looking back on it. My math was right, just not my data entry skills. Again I profusely apologize.

I am just dreading the day when my stupid mistake is going to cost someone a 'victory'....I really do try my best...but there is alot of information, and I try to get it out as quickly as I can.

Well, my ordinary bend of mind might lead me to paint a scottsman in a kilt with this tartan:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/Black_Watch.jpg

But I tend to make obscure references like that and most people won't get it, so I would probably not score well. The judges are probably expecting black paint somewhere on the mini.

Okay. I'm done!

I painted a black hole - you just can't see it because no light is bouncing back from it....

matty1001
03-23-2007, 11:32 AM
Black o bugger, I have to admit im pretty rubbish at painting black. Though I have a few ideas up my sleeve.
Anybody know how long delivery is from Hasslefree? I ordered yesterday and one of the minis is perfect, although it may not come in time.

you could probably get away with loads of stock brokers jumping out of windows too :D

vincegamer
03-23-2007, 11:39 AM
Yes, it is the Black Watch.
Actually, I currently have 3 ideas in mind. One of which is probably too ambitious as it involved heavily converting a vehicle - but it would sure be unlike anyone else’s.

Ritual
03-23-2007, 11:46 AM
matty: HF are quick, as long as what you ordered is in stock! Sally mentioned a while that most things were back in stock so if you ordered "old" stuff it shouldn't take long. If you ordered things on pre-order it may be a bit longer...

matty1001
03-23-2007, 11:51 AM
No nothing preorder or stuff out of stock (I ended up getting the white metal Artemis instead of the resin one because they were out of stock for a while) so il just hang on and start one of them when it comes.

Yay, I have moral support! Maestro, I'll just leave the smacktalk to Callum, so I can devote myself fully to the miniature(s).

The theme looks pretty demanding. I'll have to do some serious thinking here before I start. And if all else fails, I'll just tie again and trust in Vike's lucky coin. :)

You may have an easier time this round orkydave.

I was going to bow out and side step because I have a chance to have my artwork in a library gallery and possibly purchased by the collage, my teacher asked last night during class for 5 entries and I want to do an acrylic or oil for it. The clause is I must turn in the work to the provost by Friday this coming week.
That is on top of 3/4 time work,1/2 time school and chemo.

To be honest your post above was the deciding factor. Your kind attitude is worth the effort and I committed for the long haul. I am going to concentrate of that 2D opportunity first then work on this but I will take much less time working on this round, so lets get busy and paint that ****.

I've had some surprising wins (including last round), but squeaking by this one seems pretty unlikely. I think this theme plays pretty well to Eric's strengths, and I've only got a week for this as I'm going on vacation next Sat. (I might be able to paint while away, but getting decent photos seems a lot less likely.) I'm comforted by the fact with such distaff talent as Cindy, Jubilee and TAB the certainty of another victory for the ladies will barely be dented by my almost certain loss.

03-23-2007, 01:11 PM

I think you've chosen paints up fairly quickly! :)

Well its either that idea, or Cyril Abati's Alice in Wonderland idea, though that may be a bit technically difficult for me.
One reason i have ordered a bunch of HF minis is they are so simple and are fantastic without adding any clutter or extra 'stuff' that detracts from the mini. Plus they should give me a lot of practice with lighting effects and supersmooth blending.

Hope you manage to get something in for this round Tab, as its always great to see your stuff. That must be really exiting though having your 'painting' paintings in a gallery though! If you could take photo's of them and post them up when done I fo one would certainly like to see them!

Tough theme, here are a few ideas for the hopeless...

According to Mick Jagger,

" I see a record and I want to paint it black,
I see some pepper and I want to paint it black...."

or the Beatles, " Blackbird singing in the dead of night...."

or from movies

Lord Vader during a power outtage on the death star
or Wil Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in their suits...

Just a few ideas... hope they help...

You know I had this idea today about something from a horror movie scene. A hallway with a faulty light casting bad/little light on a man or woman walking down the hallway and from the dark some large creature coming to get them, mostly in black and shadows but a little bit of the creature coming into the light behind them (tentacles, claws .. etc) with glowing eyes.

Not something I could actually do myself, but boy that would be neat if someone could pull something like that off.

Anyhow, just my idea when I was going over the theme which is currently kicking my judge butt other than doing black clothing, etc.

cdukino
03-24-2007, 02:22 AM
I actually had a more or less simular idea to you Nathan. But like with the paintballing gobbo's idea from the last round this idea got weighted and placed in the never gonna make that in just 2 weeks corner. Let's just see how well I can do the main figure (who doesn't need to be in heavy shadow liike in your idea). And then see how much basingtime i have left

ps. Black. bloody hell. Defimatly not my strong point.

White. I never got the point of grey or black primer.

Well, I finally had two ideas for this round. One would have been pretty cool, but would have ruined the miniature for me (it would fit the theme, but not make much sense outside of the contest) and probably be way too much work for a week. The other idea is simpler but will probably get lower scores (which probably gives me no chance of getting to round 3, c'est la Vi). Not sure when I will be able to start painting (it is primered :) ).

My two cents on the theme... (yes, you can skip to the next message now :) )

I'm quit enjoying the competition. I just wish that I could dedicate more time to it.

It makes me paint miniatures in a way that I normally would not have (to meet the theme) and it really pressures me to make time to paint (which is very difficult for me to do).

This round has a difficult theme, but I am happy with the idea that I came-up with for it. If I can get it finished in time and do the idea justice, I will have painted a miniature in a way that I have not seen before.

For what it's worth.

The trouble I usually have is the lack of shading opportunities. I normally rely a lot on shading, so I don't have to highlight so much. With black, I really have to work extra hard on my highlights.

Second is the lack of 'color'. When painting black, I have to put extra thought in the texture I'm trying to paint, and in its reflectiveness. With highly reflective materials, you have to make really sharp highlights, where it's tricky to get smooth transitions. With comparitive dull materials, you have broad highlights which can leave the appearance of grey instead of black.

That's what I usually run into when painting black. For this round, I haven't gotten a lot of painting done. Luckily, I'll be home alone this weekend without any distractions. I should get some good painting hours in then.

Eric, most of your blacks are done as if in real darkness, or use OSL.
Most of us aren't as used to doing that. We expect the mini to be in a bright room and thus black is kinda dull.

I'm glad I didn't draw Eric as my opponent this round.

I enjoy the challenge that the themes give.

My challenges this round aren't the theme so much, more-so:

Painting black is, I think, technically difficult for many painters.
Having so little time to dedicate to this round.
Being paired against someone that is a better painter than I.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with IP in general. Possibly my headspace isn't right for the challenge at the moment to take on pushing myself. That means I am broken not the competition.

I have decided to scrap what I was doing, just to finely detailed for what I wanted to achieve vs my current skills. Given a month to work on it I may have gotten something resembling the picture in my head but not with the deadline as it stands.

What I am going to do is paint over a figure I started over a year ago but just couldn't complete - the only problem being it was for someone else.
So I will paint over what I have done (which just doesn't inspire me to continue) and I will have just over a week to get a finished product.

vincegamer

I don't think the theme is so hard.
I think we all just have high expectations.
We can all paint something black. The question is whether we can paint something black that will knock people’s socks off.
I’m not expecting to expose any toes ("Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Mose supposes erroneously..."), but I will challenge myself a bit. I will be attempting to make a distinction between black cloth and black leather - we’ll see just how successful I am.

I started this morning. I’m taking a mini I agreed to paint for a friend. It’s a GW zombie that he assembled. I have begun modifying it to give it a pop culture reference. I’ve already done some putty work to the face and I removed the sword he had. I’ve got more putty work to do, and if I can find good hands in my bitz box I’ll replace the ones he has. This is for my friend to game with in Warhammer, so no fancy base this time (but I will do something special).

p.s.
I don't think supervike should distinguish some themes as harder than others. That would all depend on what you're used to. Eric for example sees nothing hard about the current theme.

matty1001
03-28-2007, 10:07 AM
And depending on the interpretation of the theme, there may be nothing hard about it at all.
Which is why i am so eager for the mini I have in mind to arrive, because my interpretation on it will be easy to do.

Jubilee
03-28-2007, 11:11 AM
Maybe it's because I'm used to painting from dark to light, or maybe it's because people are always telling me I don't highlight enough, but I didn't think painting black was as hard as it seemed at first glance. It was kindof nice to push myself to do something in a color/style I don't often paint.. :)

I see your point, but then should we call the first couple rounds the "TIN Painter?".

While I don't purposefully make it hard on painters, I certainly wouldn't want to make it easier for them either....

If people have to drop out because the 'theme' is too hard then they weren't cut out to be iron painters anyhow....

Besides...there are plenty of cases where the theme wasn't the entries strong point, yet it still made it through.

The beauty of the matchups means you only have to do slightly better than your competitor...Its not an overall competition. You beat one painter at a time...

Duende
03-28-2007, 09:49 PM
I agree, the difficulty of theme isn't really something that can be pegged down. Something that's difficult for one may be a cakewalk for another.

Besides, if a painter can't handle a "difficult" theme early, what makes them think they can handle it later? Especially later, since this is basically a painting marathon for whoever makes it into the final rounds, we're talking weeks of churning out entry after entry... you would think in the later rounds an "easy" theme would be a welcome break.

And like Vike said, this is IRON Painter! I you can't hack it, then take a seat to the side and let the others show thier "metal".

I finished my project for the library/college gallery/purchase contention below is a slide show link to the quick pictures I took running out the door.

I finished an hour before the deadline and have very little sleep for 6 days hence. I started it last Saturday night.
This it is my first painting on canvas. I used acrylic paint.
I was surprised because I only have 2 drawing classes and no other art experience but mini painting.
My family put up and helped me so much I owe them big. I basically painted straight through the time frame i would sleep a few hours then wake and restart.
I owe you an apology Wren I am very sorry I have not been to the post office and feel badly for that. Your mini will leave the house Monday please forgive the delay.

I slept today and started tonight for this event and I am plugging right along. Ready set go, my theme is "Acidy spit ... I want that! "

Okay, so here's what I did:
Prime black
Basecoat flesh
think some more
think some more
Decide it needed more changes:
remove hands/guns
add new hands new guns
putty to repair the sleeves/hide where the hands join
putty the back of the coat to make it full and flowing

So, now I think I'm ready to reprime and start painting (well, after I've done some sanding on the coat - it just cured after all.

Smack talk seems to be going downhill lately. Is it because the smackers has all gone to the sidelines? All I hear is "oh my model is coming out so well, oh my model arrived today & I'm gonna start doing this that, my model arms broken...blah blah"

You know what, who gives a damn what you are doing anyway. Just show us what you got. Maybe some decent wips? And no close up, guess what model is this bull**** please.

Hmmm... and this place starts to smell better now, are we missing Maestro?

TAB, your picture is fantastic! I really like it, and I hope they select it, but even if they don't I think you did great stuff well worth losing a little sleep over. And please don't feel you need to apologize to me, I'm hardly the quickest or most organized person in the world. Get some sleep and take your time getting to the post office.

Iron update - I'm in a hotel in Ohio now. I've brought my IP piece, and hope to work on it more later today. No WIP yet, I'll test how that goes later also, I only brought one lamp and I normally photograph with two.

And yes 2 weeks is too long, how about 2 days?

Lots of posts here from round one losers still, do they have nothing better to do with theit time (like a round 2 mini?) !!!

Those canvas work look fantastic tab!! I had to enlarge the picture and had a really good look and they still look like a photo! fantastic stuff! If they were on a 28mm model instead of canvas then I would be very worried! However, this is IRON PAINTER, not namby pamby pretty flower painter!!! And theres no second chances this round either, Missy!

Have been in hospital this weekend after bleeding out of my left ear and going deaf in it. Was working on my entry but have scrapped that idea after it went **** up! ( I blame poor lighting, hospital food and cocodomol, not my painting skills, theyre more iron than iron man doing the ironing whilst listening to Iron Maiden whilst simitaneously watching the iron Giant on cartoon!) Should be able to salvage the mini for ebay in the future, and have an idea to work the base into my duel entry for this years Golden demon.

Have had a lot of time to think about the competition and have came up with a much cooler and funnier theme idea! I must say that deafness and blood has been a bit of a blessing in disguise as I am much more motivated with this idea, and may even be finished and uploaded later on tonight!

Anyways heres a picture of the abandoned Emperors championhttp://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k74/Orkydave/DSC00293.jpg project and the start of the new idea too!

Thanks for the concern ear wise guys and gals, Had an operation on them just before christmas to help sort them out and they have been buggered since then! The bleeding was caused by a perforated ear drum with an infection behind the ear drum and in the canal too. Slowly getting the hearing back in it now so fingers crossed its all gonna be ok!

Hi all. I'm still on vacation, so am not caught up on all the hilarious smack and such. (I did see the new concept art on the front page, looks great FF!)

I did work a bit on my entry earlier in the week, and then did a few test photos I was going to try and post as a WIP. They came out terribly due to the poor lighting I have to work with. If this was the kind of vacation where you go out and look at sights and such during the day but don't have all that much to do at night after everything closes, I'd have kept at it, but I'm at a game con where there's always stuff to do, so after a couple of days I said screw these Wyrdos, I'm gonna go play some games and have fun on my vacation! ;-> I do feel badly for not entering something, I'd have preferred to give Eric and clean and honourable win. I'll have to see if I can come up with something cool to send him to make up for it. I guess I really am mashed up aluminum and not Iron after all!

Good luck to all of those who did finish, I look forward to viewing all the entries, commenting and catching up on the smack next week!

theres 9 entries but only 3 actual matchups!!! No Way!!!

Just wondered what will happen now in respect to qualifying? By my maths (which are probably on par with vikeys so may be wrong!) 6 painters can progress, 3 winners from the matchup and 3 'unchallenged'.

6 isn't enough people for a quater final but too many for a semi final. My brain hurts just thinking about it!!!

A plus factor for those still left in it is that the reigning champ and shoddy, the bookies favourite DNF!!! This has opened the contest right open IMHO!

A big well done to all us real painters who got something finished, which judging by the small turnout is quite an achievement in itself!

This is pathetic. The rules were explained at the beginning and you think it's beyond your ability to keep up why the hell did you bother to sign up anyway and ruin it for those who are actully willing to try and do the work to win? Out of eight matchups there's only THREE where scores will actually matter for anything! I can understand the reason why Mosch had to drop out, but where the hell is everybody else? This is a joke, I put together a nice prize package of my own but now I'm beginning to wonder why I bothered....

This contest was started all for the purpose of some good fun so lets not get too worked up. I am pretty sure all of us here are mature enough to take this competition seriously, respecting your opponents whoever they may be, by putting our best effort to come up with a good entry each round. More importantly, to be able to accept "no shows" from them due to unforeseen circumstances.

We had 2 very successful IPs before and I hate to see this turn sour. Like I said previously, lets move on and to those who dropped out hope everyone is doing fine, better luck next time.

Now you see how tough the Iron Painter is. :wallbash:

I agree it's by no means a given that people will have time to finish their entries. The last two times I participated in IP, my entries were very last-minute affairs.. :) The slightest sort of mishap would have prevented me from entering at all. I can't even remember if I finished a mini in the 2nd round of IP1, myself (or did I not participate in IP2 and just get to the 2nd round of IP1? My poor muddled brain..).

There's no reason to get upset.. the rest of us can still have fun!

/ali

ps.. why does a set number of people have to advance? Why not the 3 competing winners and those who had no competition.. ?

orkydave

if 6 advance, that would mean 3 people progressing to the semi final.

2 would draw each other and one would get a free pass into the final whih hardly seems fair.
