Hi all,
I have just received the Malifaux Rules Manual, and now I hear stuff about Rising Powers.
I was under the impression that the rules manual is the latest version of the rules - do I need to get Rising Powers as well?

Nope!
Rising Powers is the 2nd book and was out about 8 months before the Rules Manual. What Rising Powers and the first book contain that is still useful is Model Stats (which you can get on the cards) and Fluff. Really the only thing they have any more that you can't get anywhere else is the Fluff.
So rest assured, you only need the Rules Manual for the core rules of the game. From there you can simply buy the models you want and their stats will come with them.

Thanks for that.
Shame they took all the fluff out, that's one thing that I'm finding hard to understand as a newbie to the Malifaux world.
But I don't really want to spend £40 on the first two books just for fluff....hmm

Well remember... the Rules Manual is dirt cheap for a Rule book.. it's very hard to beat $15. Yes not having Fluff is a bummer, but it is exactly as it advertises... the rules for the game.
Well if you know others who have the books, you can always read that. The first 2 books also have all the model stats in them, so they are always useful for that at least. In the end, if it's worth the money to you... buy it.

Main reason for owning the first 2 rule books?... Know thine enemy! Also enables you to better choose additional minions for your crew prior to buying them.
And yeah the fluff too!

Theriddler my suggestion would be to find a local club that plays malifaux, and ask to borrow books 1 and 2 for the fluff. I don't know which part of London you are in, but there are plenty of groups in London that play.
Then when you've seen how awesome they are (and want to keep ploting schemes to beat your foe) you'll probably want your own copy at some point.

Yeah, buying the books is essential just because they're brilliant - both the artwork and fluff is well worth the few quid they cost.

If you wanted to come down to the Cross Gaming Club I'd be happy to lend you the books- forums here http://www.crossgamingclub.com/forum/index.php
I have two copies of the first book I think and if you didn't mind a scribbled on, slightly ripped and well thumbed one you could have it for keeps. Feel free to PM me for more details.
