View Full Version : Are 'Focus' actions affected by abilities that reference 'Strikes'?

Example from a game tonight - The Alp's Exhaustion ability - "Enemy non-Nightmare models suffer 1 Wd when taking a Wk or Strike Action within 1" of this model"
If a model makes a Focus Action for 2 AP, does this count as a Strike action for the purpose of this ability and others that reference strikes (same question applies to "Casts" and "Channel" actions)...

If it says Strike Action it is referring to the (1)Strike. (2)Focus allows you to take a Strike but it's not an action.

but it's not an action.
its 2!
:peep:
there are a lot of ways to bypass not actually taking a (1) Strike Action against an alp.
In fact the only way this ability goes off is if you actually just make a simple (1) Strike, or if you (2) Flurry, as that explicitly gives you 3 strike actions. There could potentially be other abilities that say they give you Strike Actions as opposed to just strikes, or attacks, but I am not aware of any.

I'm talking about the Strike, not the focus, duffus :slap: and even that is a single action, just costs 2 AP.

Duffus may well have some valid points here..

Itīs still a bit weird..Hope there will be some erratta for it...
I know, that what the Marchalls said is official as well, but it feel a bit...nerfing (Yup, I play Alps :D )

I would not expect an errata, as the rule does not really change anything.
Per the Alp Card:
Exhaustion: Enemy non-nightmare models suffer 1 WD when taking a WK or Strike action within 1" of this model
Pg 39 of the rules anual defines 3 different actions you can take as general combat actions.
(1) Strike
(1) Defensive Stance
(2) Focus
Focus is a separate action than strike, so your taking a focus action not a strike action.

there are also many ways to move without taking a walk action. getting around alps takes some creativity but can be done.
if you think this is a nerf to alps maybe taking candy from children is more your thing :lollypop:

 got to give some counters to alps keep in mind a focus strike is very expensive...2ap. You already are probably taking terrifying checks at negative If playing against dreamer.
A 3ss minions who can tarpit almost any model for a turn is huge. Not saying alps are op but if this was different that would make them ridiculous. Few models can spend more then 2 AP.

I'd just like to check whether Lilith's "Whirling Death" would count as a Strike Action. I'm guessing it does, as the wording is:
"(2) Whirling Death: Discard a Control Card. This model immediately makes a Greatsword Strike against every model within 2."
But I figured it's worth checking
Cheers

If I'm understanding Ratty's previous ruling, Whirling Death would not count as a Strike Action. Only (1) Strike is a Strike Action. Focus, Whirling Death, and the like are actions that create strikes. Confusing enough yet?
Some different nomenclature for (1) Strike would clear this up, maybe (1) Melee, or something, but it's not really a big deal as this wont come up very often.

you are correct it would not trigger it

actually what you used - (1) Strike - (ie. spending an AP to make a strike action) is the difference between doing something else that simply gives you a strike.
