Chaos should lend itself to this theme really well! Good luck with it.

Its a 10mm (you will be amazed at the amount of detail i will be able to paint onit!) scale LoTR fella, iv painted the cloak at the back, but im to tired to take pics now so il just leave it for now.

10mm Matty! Very brave of you for a painting competition mate, be interesting to see what you come up with for the flesh.

@professor villanousprimate- Yep, thats a Rasta Dwarf! The Idea came about from a play on words whilst reading a well known monthly GW publication! The dreadlocks are as far as the conversion goes however, as I am still in 2 minds wether this will be acceptable however and not cross the line and upset anyone, So I will steer well clear of any stereotypes that may be too much.In 16 hobby years I have never seen a dwarf with dark skin before (or even painted dark skin before!) so thought this would be challenging and true to the theme.

More 1:3 really as a Feegle is 6 inches. She's more like a young Kelda (females are very rare). She's turning out nicely. Blue skin suits her. I did find a perfect candidate for a male Feegle (much wilder, not sexy, booze drinking mad scotchman) which in retrospect might have made the feegle inspiration more clear. Ah well maybe later. No way i can do both of them on the base I made and make it look good.

And yep Nemain is a Celtos Gael fig (OOP due to being sued by Rackham when i-kore still owned the range). I could add a touch of scotish look and had enough skin and hair in that one to play with the Feegle coloursceme

Heres what i have done on mine:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n312/matty1001/IPWIP2.jpg

I had done all the freehand in red, then decided to do some in brown, then i went completely off the red so im going to paint over it all. But it takes AGES to get the colours right again. Iv already went over a red pattern which was just under the hood.
The trims will be done in Gold NMM, though iv never done this before (gold NMM) so that will be a challenge.
Other than that there is just a few bits which needs tidying up and slight reworking.

What do you mean siding? It's just factual. He did start from a blank mini after the matchup and theme were announced and finished within the two weeks, so it would be a valid entry. Just because it was finished within a day and he didn't post wips doesn't change that fact.

And from what little I know, Eric is planning on doing a different mini for the IP anyway, hopefully he will entertain up all with WIP shots along the way this time. *nudge, nudge, Eric!*

Well, I still prefer the surprise.
I may post a series of WIPs in the last couple of days.
I managed to get a couple hours of painting in. The skin tones I've chosen are going to take a lot more work though.

Oh, and I counted. I actually had to drill 35 holes for this project. (that includes both holes for each pin job)

EricJ
03-06-2007, 10:29 AM
wait, 35 doesn't divide by 2...some holes must not be for pins! (figured it out all on my own, smart)

orkydave
03-06-2007, 10:45 AM
I would thought that anything that Eric paints up for Wyrd would be an 'official' paint job and colour scheme, and therefore totally unsuitable for a DIFFERENT coloured flesh themed competition?

Just my thoughts!

(not that I am trying to find a sneaky and underminded loophole to throw a spanner in the works of one of the strongest painters in this competition mind!!!)

Good work so far Matty, the freehand is looking good and I swear you are improving with every mini you paint!

Cindy and Henrix- They look like cool minis to paint up with lots of flesh to play to the theme.

@ Henrix- I have heard that nail varnish remover is great at protecting your mini's mate, why not try it on this one !!!!

(not that I am using sneaky underhanded tactics to sabbotage my opponent either!)

Iff
03-06-2007, 10:47 AM
Maybe he managed to include a three-way pin. ;)

I'm going a bit in the same direction as Orkydave, it seems. Not rasta per se, but I have a dwarf prepped and primed, with a preliminary color scheme in mind. I don't have a camera at home, so probably no WIP shots from me...

Iff

Maestro

wait, 35 doesn't divide by 2...some holes must not be for pins! (figured it out all on my own, smart)Eric, if you pin 2 arms to a torso and drill the hole right through the torso into both arms, you'd have 3 holes for that 1 pin. Doesn't devide by 2, does it..?

God, your thinking is about as shoddy as your craftmanship...

John

I would thought that anything that Eric paints up for Wyrd would be an 'official' paint job and colour scheme, and therefore totally unsuitable for a DIFFERENT coloured flesh themed competition?

I was just saying, technically, it would be a valid entry, however it would score low in the "use of theme" area. Also, it appeared that I was supporting Callumrice in the other IP thread, so how could I be favoring both? I'm still waiting for a nice bribe from either.... oops, did I say that outloud?

And Meastro, I already used Eric and "shoddy" in the same sentence. Find your own adjectives to insult him with! Hardly the creative one, are you? Your IP future doesn't bode well.....

;)

EricJ
03-06-2007, 11:52 AM
hmmm, I guess then he must have...A LOT of arms for that many holes...so the new tactic is to confuse me long enough to miss the deadline!?

And it's skin of a different color, not "non-official" color, nothing says the official color can't be different, does it? :D

vincegamer
03-06-2007, 11:56 AM
I just keep wondering: different from what?

Oh, that and that it's "flesh" of a different color, and "flesh" doesn't necessarily mean skin.
For instance it could be the flesh of a peach.

Wren
03-06-2007, 12:15 PM
If you have a peach with flesh of a different colour, I suggest that you do not eat it...

I picked out my mini, inspiration for said (one of those where I'll never paint it as cool as it is in my imagination ones sadly), prepped and primed back on Friday, but I've gone back to working on commission stuff in the meantime, so it's all nekkid and has flesh of no colour as yet.

Well, not really, but I have to try to get some smack in here and there. This is a colour test for the mini I plan to do. It's based on some cool looking fish. I have doubts that I'll get this mini to look even half way as cool as the fish, but it's worth a shot. I don't always do colour tests, but there were two sorts of fish I liked and I needed to explore the options for the blue, too, so it seemed like it'd be useful to do for this one. Bonus points to anyone who can figure out the mini from my photorealistic renditions! ;->

vince - I'll have to test again once I've made progress and have another picture. I tried doing what you said and when I right-click on the picture I just get the option to copy the actual picture, I don't get an address to copy. Something must be slightly different with this version of the site software, because I did manage to suss this all out on my own to post WIP pictures on the last IP.

orkydave - sort of a cross between your two guesses actually (though not a GW mini), though minus the bickering dinosaurs. Not that that isn't a cool concept for some future date. ;-> I'm impressed you could discern actual limbs in my stellar sketches.

Well Ive started some basework on mine and I have to say, Im suitably impressed! I gave a tip away earlier on another thread "my painting would be better if...". Bet you cant guess what tip it was!

My painting would be better if...
I stopped painting with my pliers
I used paint instead of my own blood
I looked at the model whilst painting it
I stopped thinking "it just needs a little more neon green"

I decided to make a change last night, so even though I have already painted all of the skin, I had to drill another hole and this morning I glued a pin in it.
(the astute will note that I did not drill 2 holes and yet I used a pin...)

You know, I'm getting close here. I think I'm going to have to figure out what to do for a base pretty soon.

Valleyo still water (love this stuff eventhough it does shrink a lot, But with plenty of ayers it looks good), Vallejo water effects (lot less happy with this one. It's like handcream (colour and consistancy and way of working with it.) If put on more then about a mm thick it doesn't dry u clear enough, or not at all or takes for bloody ever. But with very thin layers working it up, keeping on the safe side it does work). And white paint

Well the 54mm LoTR fella went **** up. Because it was just a 'collectable' style mini, the emphasis on the detail wasn't to great. The mail armour was proving impossible because of the lack of detail. I could have pulled something off, but due to limitations in the sculpt it would have been much harder, with not as good results. (if you understand what i mean!)
Sooo....im going to continue a piece iv started during these two weeks, it ain't perfect for the theme idea, but i can probably achieve a much better paintjob on it than the first idea.

I actually made a bit of progress today. In the spirit of fairness to TAB, who must be quaking in her boots to be paired up against the reigning Iron Painter, I have decided to use my entry as a test of the P3 paints. My last attempt at using these did not go that well, but as they have three colours that fit one of my fishes, two of which are not great coverage colours traditionally, I thought I would put them to another test as the P3 paints are supposed to have wonderful coverage. Also because of the fairness to my opponent and everything, right.

I didn't do a side-by-side test, but I'm not super impressed with the coverage on the orange. It took roughly five bazillion coats, which seems in line with anyone else's orange. It is a nice intense colour, though. That makes orange a bad choice for this mini, as it has a lot of shallow detail that might be a little softened by the many coats. I have not started on the flesh yet, but I did do some work on 'hair of a different colour'. I'm not sure if the magenta has great coverage, I will have to test that some time as I love that colour but it's frustrating to get a basecoat with the equivalent Reaper Master Series paint. The orange at the roots doesn't seem to be showing up as nicely in the photo. And let's see if I can actually get the photo to show up this time before FF completely despairs of me...

My IP entry is going like **** :(. I primed him Friday first with white and then with a green spray from Tamiya. Couldn't probably get a worse result than that...the green dried real splotchy (like the surface underneath was greasy) and all detail was covered by the green paint.

He is now in the acetone, but with only one week ahead and with all kinds of stuff going on here at home I'm not overly enthousiastical about this :(. The putty has to be redone and I probably cannot use the green spray again because of the hideous results.

Good. That's the purpose of these pics.
I actually find it hard to take a pic that doesn't completely give away what I am doing.
I thought the jig-saw puzzle in the last pic might give it away, but then I realized you'd probably have to think like me to see it.

Now I will feel bad about the thrashing I give you.

On a related note, when doing a fancy base, do you usually cut off the slotta before painting?
After seeing what others have done I realized I was going to have to do a special base, so after having painted everything but his boots I then clipped off the slotta and took the dremel to clean up the bottom.
I only broke 1 thing on the mini while doing so!

Anyway the base is built and mostly painted, though the wife says it needs a coke and maybe a hotdog. I'll see what I can do.

Nice seeing some WIP pics in the gallery! Less than a week to go! Get cracking!

Wren
03-12-2007, 10:52 AM
My progress from this weekend is more wilting flower - I still hate the coverage of orange. Also the colours I've selected seem to be no joy to photograph. Since all I managed was to refine the hair in ways that are probably unnoticeable and paint another zillion coats of orange to cover up paint spatter and such, I am not bothering with another WIP just yet. Maybe this evening, though...

My progress was actually good at the weekend but I am very aware Im slowly running out of time with still a substantial part of the mini left to paint!

Its one of those minis that when you have painted one bit, you decide that the next part is detrimental to the mini looking good, then once thats done, you decide that the next part is the most important and so on. So now, I believe I have the most important part of the mini left to paint in a short timescale. Going to get cracking on it the nite! Looking forward to it now, even although Eric has probably concocted another masterpiece!

The man stammered, " I think I want a second opinion" and left. The next day, he saw an Asian doctor and after his exam, he asked the doctor " Will you have to amputate?" Well here is the base, it doesn't have so much negative space when the miniature is placed onit. The snow isnt really meant to be there, but a cock up with water effects meant i had to add it, otherwise it was laughable!
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n312/matty1001/base.jpg

And here is a sneak peek of the model, the painting is going well, apart from the theme bit. It was easier in theory than it is in practice, and if i had the time i would start a new mini, but considering this is the second mini iv attempted for this iv already wasted enough time.

Will Eric surprise us all and actually submit an entry?

Piece of clear plastic rod sanded lightly at end and painted

I hope your wife's doing all right vince.

I painted today, but I'm not sure I should have bothered. I'm cranky, and it just made me crankier. I'm still not sure about the P3 paint, maybe it's a wetblender's wet dream, but I layer and glaze, and it seems tricky to get the consistency I want. And I hate the bottles. I didn't think I cared that much, but apparently I've become a dropper bottle convert along the way. If they were at least twist off... but this flip top thing, I get paint all over me every time I open the things which I worry about smudging on the mini. I usually use toothpicks to get paint out of twist top bottles, but it doesn't work as well with these narrow, deep jars, so I'm using a paintbrush and it's messier, makes my water messier more quickly, and doesn't seem as exact. I think I'm using three times as much paint as normal (and I normally use a lot of paint compared to many people I've seen) between the messes and the consistency problems. It's got great colour intensity and is a nice smooth paint, but I'm getting the feeling it just doesn't work with my style of painting. Ah well, maybe I'll try a little more tonight.

It was fun to know you Callum..

**Tell tale...... youll pay john, youll pay..**

Now come on Nathan, it was blatantly obvious I have shown nothing but respect for your amazing minis. I mean, truly brilliant, amazing, unique minis. I thought it daft to even send one to maestro though, he could only ever bring down the look of them. It was a tragic waste of a mini and in my humble opinion the worst dunking job I have ever seen on a mini.

Please, accept my humble apology for that tricksy maestro messing with my words, he is a dork.

Im so sorry.

Right after I posted those, I got called in to the hospital for an emergency case and will not get to work on it anymore tonight. I am on call for the whole weekend, so if the hospital keeps me busy, I will be hosed.

Houston - we have a problem.

Deadline is upon me and I don't think I'm going to make it. My two ladies had a wee accident and had to be restarted - and with my day like it is tomorrow - I'm not sure I can pull it off....

So Monki - how's yours coming along?

DrEvilmonki

My lad will be done. Not a masterpiece by any stretch but I think suits the theme pretty well.

Edit - remember they are a day behind us, so in effect you have until Monday.

I'm still working on my entry. A bit behind schedule, but I should be ok. I haven't anything from red in a while; did he get scared when looking at the pictures on my website? (Well, I did warn him, didn't I? :D)

Pshaw, I'm not scared. I'm feverish, and hacking up a lung, and otherwise poorly disposed, but have shown my true iron by soldiering on and finishing my entry tonight. I just need to seal, photograph and post it by the deadline.

(Sadly the whole feverish thing means I'm too stupid right now to figure out your hint in the WIP picture, though. Other than fire + brush makes me cringe a little for the brush. I look forward to seeing your entry!)

Got mine up. I had trouble uploading the photos, they were getting shrunken down although the image size was under 200kb. I made a shorter montage with only two views and that worked. Is it possible for me to delete the excess images or does an admin need to do that? Also I can upload a picture with the other two views if the judges want it.

All the entries I've seen so far look great (I think you have this one in the bag TAB!), but I'm still pretty under the weather so I'll have to come back and comment later. Good luck everyone!

Do to work, both Tyneth and me haven't been able to finish our entries in time. Sorry to Jim, Maestro, Thryth, and the other Iron Painters for letting you down.

Just for kicks, we uploaded our latest WIP in the gallery section.

Good luck to all for the next rounds.

Bugger! I just got back from work and after a full out weekend - obviously missed my deadline. So hats off to everyone who finished - excellent work.

I guess I can now tell you my plan that didn't come to fruition.

Celebrity mud wrestling! Flesh is definitely coloured differently after some time in the ring - so I had two models - one standing over the other - both covered in mud with bits of their natural skin/hair tone showing through. The two girls were also different ethnicities so there again was a play on flesh of a different colour theme. A small section of the ring complete with posts and ropes was constructed and I built up the mud with many small layers of PVA.

Great plan (I thought) but too long to execute when you have to start over - so no joy in foiling DrEvilMonki's rise to the top. So - good luck to all those who continue and mr monki - what kind of figure would you be after as a prize?

@WolfDreamer - You could still always post what you got in the IP WIP gallery like GreenStuff and Tyneth did, then we could at least what you almost had, and DrEvilmonki can thank his lucky stars that he didn't have to compete against it. :D

My how I love confidence!

What if

a. you don't advance?
b. it doesn't match the theme?
c. maybe I missed the point?

Well, c is generally a given so that shouldn't affect anything.

a. What, just because we've submitted our entries I am not allowed to talk smack anymore?

b. Doh! (you mean you didn't get the bribe?)
