We do it all the time in our group for unreleased models. And even when models are released, we typically let people use their proxies for a week or so until they've had a chance to get the released model and assemble/paint it. Even after all that, if you've got a proxy that you just like playing, rather than the official model, often times nobody makes a fuss about it, as long as you have indeed bought the official model at some point, and you're using the official stat card.

My local rule is you are allowed to proxy one model or group of same models in an event. They need to look like what you are playing, be painted and you need to produce a stat card that you can easily hand your opponent. This is generally for local events with around 10 people.

For anything bigger I general default to the official no proxy rule because it becomes hard to police what people are proxing what models.

For me, I require any proxies to be fully painted and based and be a reasonable representation of the model it is.

This typically only applies to unreleased models, but some players really don't like some models and go out of their way to create a cool "conversion/proxy" which I let slide if there's been a real effort made.

This also only applies to events with less than 15 people, more than that and it's to difficult to police.

personally I'm not really a fan because I'm usually unfamiliar with models until they come out.

also, Fayetteville?! awesome! are people starting to pick up malifaux at treefort?

oh yea there is a small core of us (9 people own stuff and are around and about 5 that play regularly) at Treefort games who have picked it up and have been playing alot. i'll probably be running events regularly once i find a day that works well for people.

personally i find the proxy thing distasteful in malifaux because of the story driven aspects, but i play guild and almost everything is out for them.

We allow proxies if you have purchased the actual model and stat card but simply think something else looks better, or for un-released models in small events. In large events no proxies, however conversions are ok. (as long as something in the model is recognizable.)

*nods* our henchman Genetic is a meanie and doesnt allow proxies at tournaments he runs, mainly because he fears my convict gunslinger lol. I gotta get around to modifying a wyrd model into a good convict gunslinger. I am thinking changing the two sword vicky into a two gun gunslinger.
