What makes a henchmen a henchmen? Is it a keyword only henchmen have or is it's because they are a unique model? Are they something new or have they been around for while?

They are new in Rising Powers, and it's a specific Characteristic that they have. At present, there are only 6 Henchmen: Lucius, Kaeris, Molly, Collodi, Von Schill, and Ophelia.

Basically, they're a new type of model added in Rising Powers which can be used as either a Master or a Minion with special rules that apply to using it either way... So added in the last year or so.

It's because they have a key word in their type "Henchmen" with a number after it which is their Henchmen Reserve (which is only used if they lead a crew). They can lead a Crew like a Master or be taken in a crew with a Master. They mainly giving you access to more models from the Special Forces listed in their rules. So for example, Ophelia gives you access to more Kin models.
There are only 6 right now: Lucius, Kaeris, Collidi, Molly, and Ophelia.
*EDIT* And Von'Schill, forgot about him >.>
They are not really that new, they have been out for about 8 months now, they premiered in Rising Powers which was released at Gencon in 2010.
See Page 9 of the Rules Manual for some more information on them.
