Can Zorida summon Wicked Dolls without buying them into her crew? It was my understanding that their ability to be in play side by side with a Voodoo doll, but doesn't she have to hire the Wicked Doll before it's rule that it can be summoned comes into play?

She doesn't need to pay for them before the game starts, it's exactly like any other summon in the game, ie the cost is the spell or effect that summons the model. The cost in this case comes from Zoraida having to spend 2AP to summon it.

It didn't exist when Zoraida came out, so they put the rule on the Wicked Doll card therefore.

I don't understand your 2nd sentence but the info is on the Doll's card and that's quite enough. Why would you want to squeeze more words on Z's already crowded card?
