With the Halloween and Harvest season right around the corner, it is once again time to kick things off with, to date, our most popular contest, The Rotten Harvest!
Round about the paint pot go. On the palette throw
royal blue and blood red. Forty-seven Days of Dread;
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and paint pot bubble.
The contest will run from September 15th through October 31st and during that time competition entries can be submitted. At the close of the contest, voting will commence for one week where you will be allowed to vote anonymously through the Wyrd forum software as well as leave comments and critique which we have found our previous entrants have greatly enjoyed. After the voting, announcements will be made and prizes sent to the winners, along with the random prizes that we give away with every contest.
The specific rules for the contest can be found on the Wyrd Miniatures website on the forums under 'Wyrd Painting Contest: Rules and Information' (http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=450). I would really like to stress folks to read the rules, as folks tend to miss them for some reason and they end up misunderstanding the contest, the theme or disqualify themselves.
Due to the sheer number of people that have entered unedited photographs in the past we will no longer do any editing for you. There are many free photo resizing programs out there. Wyrd staff will attempt to notify anyone who's pictures were deleted due to size or for any reason, but can not guarantee notification.
The categories for the contest are:
Witches and Warlocks Spellcasters of all sorts, from high fantasy, modern day dabbler to the far sci-fi future. If they carry a wand, cast a spell or even have a hint of mysticism to them, this is the category for them.
Not Quite Dead Yet Still stumbling around after all the major organ functions have shut down? Have a beef with the living? This category is for the Undead, or as they like to be called 'Living Impaired'.
Things that go Bump in the Night Creatures, critters, monsters and other things that have a tendency towards anti-social behavior and prowl the night looking for victims. Caution, here be Monsters!
The Trick or the Treat This is our catch-all category as there are some miniatures that are just right for the theme but just don't seem to fall into any other category. Zombie Hunters, pumpkin characters and I'm sure several miniatures I never would have even contemplated.
The Harrowing Harvest A diorama with two or more miniatures locked in combat, or something as equally disturbing.
Wyrd Miniatures will be supplying prizes and gift certificates for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of each category, except for Best of Show and Best Base or Diorama as that category has only the one winner. We'll also be offering a 'Best of Wyrd' manufacturers prize for the best Wyrd Miniatures entry, which is a $100USD gift certificate on top of any other prizes or categories you may win.

Awesome! If only my painting skills were a bit better. :(
Ah well, work is slowing down so I might be able to blow through a few minis to submit. :)

Ah jea!!! thanks for taking the reins on this one Matt.
Does this mean we actually get to see a painted mini from Supervike!!?? I didn't know he painted! I thought he just hung around high schools with binoculars and bad intentions.

Very cool! Now I'm glad I hadn't had a chance to finish up some of the pieces I've been working on. I think one of them will be a good submission for this. I don't think I'll win compared to some of the stuff I've seen in the galleries for the past contests, but should be fun. :)

That's really unfair. I told you that I'm just there to make sure the crosswalks are marked, and the binoculars are for bird watching....yeah...bird watching....
I'm looking forward to this! I haven't participated in a Wyrd contest for ages. Now, where'd I put me crayons?

Oh man! Could it really be true? Supervike and the Frustrated Father in on the same contest? That might just throw off the natural balance of the world and open a breach or something! :thrasher:
Friendly reminder to those that haven't painted in a while: It takes longer than you think, so get going!

Yayyyys!
I hope to get something in this one, but even more than that, looking forward to seeing sv and Nathan enter!
I'm so tempted to enter three categories, but I think I'll work on one or two and step my game up.
Already have a too-cool-not-to-try conversion in mind just for this. Which will probably be my downfall.

I hear ya Nathan. I'm still in the buffer zone for my own painting skills after being out of it for so long. I do want to thank you, sincerely, though, for creating Malifaux and inspiring me to get back into both miniatures and writing.
Got a question. Can the same figure be used in multiple categories of the contest? If it fits? I have some ideas if only I can...

If its two separate painted miniatures (same type though), sure. If its the same painted miniature, entered into multiple categories, nope.

I believe a few of us are having the same difficulty as 'guilty' when trying to find where and how to upload to the appropriate folder/gallery. If someone can post a link or directions it will help.

Pretty sure I read somewhere here in the rules forums that if you put in multiple pics of the same mini, they'll just get deleted anyways. Just wanted to confirm this as that's what I ended up doing. I entered my pics and then later today learned how to make a montage of the two minis I entered. So then I entered them again with the improved pics, or what I hope is improved pics...

I'm thinking it might be a good time to pick up a paintbrush again. I enjoyed last year's competition (my first mini painting competition), and it got pretty exciting seeing the entries and waiting for results.

Here is a little of what I've been working on in the last few months. I've been doing stuff more "table-top quality" in my opinion. I've wanted to get some pieces ready for some games I'm working on. I've only got one piece currently started on that I would consider more "competition worthy"... in my opinion anyway. The stuff I've been working on is for a Stars Wars dungeon crawl-type game, set in the Old Republic era.
The first is a Trooper with a Heavy Repeating Blaster, a M.E.R.C.S. mini:
http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/Zonobia_ffxi/Non_FF_Related/TrooperwithRepeatingBlaster.jpg
Next up is a young jedi (from Hasslefree I think?). I went a bit too neon with the green, but I'm not too concerned about fixing it...its more for gaming than critically viewing:
http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/Zonobia_ffxi/Non_FF_Related/youngjedi.jpg
And last is one I'm currently converting. It's an Infinity mini that had a big gun in her right hand, and a katana in the other hand. I'm still working on the green stuff, but it was a b#tch getting that back arm cleaned up:
http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/Zonobia_ffxi/Non_FF_Related/adultjedi.jpg
Peterdita
10-16-2010, 01:42 PM
Nice. I love that little Jedi Girl. Not sure why I don't have those yet... So many minis, so few hours to paint them all!
That dungeon crawl star wars game sounds tight.
If you fall off while you're crawling, don't worry, there are matress pads to fall on.

That looks great! The colors all go very well together, and are complimentary to the base. I'm a big fan of Redbox Games minis...they are very nice traditional fantasy minis, and this one looks great the way you've presented it!

Thanks Keith.
Yeah, Tre is what I would consider my favorite sculptor right now. Like you said, his minis are spot on awesome fantasy. I painted that one for a comp over on WAMP, and was blown away with the entries people put in. Check out this gallery (http://www.wamp-forum.com/photopost/g615-red-box-games-2010.html)full of some pretty impressive RBG stuff.

A couple of questions:
1) Multiple models as a single entry are permissable, correct? For example, a group of zombies for the undead section, or a coven of witches for the magic entry.
2) Looks like there's not a separate Malifaux Masters category - this means everyone in the same pool, right?
Almost done with my entries, and I'm very excited to see what folks come up with!
Peterdita
10-21-2010, 10:12 AM
I'm no the host/judge but....
1) I've seen multiple minis in a single entry before. They usually go in the harrowing harvest though.
2) Nope, no masters of Malifaux category. That may have been just a tester or something, havent seen it in the two comps since. We are all against each other, hacks and pro's alike :friday:
I've got so much to do yet for this...Shall be a busy weekend thats for sure!

Whee! Managed to get a pair in! Been a year or two since I've competed in the Wyrdness and I'm looking forward to seeing how I do...
I think in the new ruleset, those select few that have won BoS in any Wyrd contest will be separated into the masters category. I believe rule #3 states it, if I read it correctly. That makes you a Master, Peterdita!
Peterdita
10-25-2010, 05:42 PM

I think I'm going to pack it in. My entry isn't coming out as well as I'd like, and I really don't feel like putting in an all nighter. (I'm saving those for Iron Painter.) I blame Fallout: New Vegas for keeping me away from the painting table for a week. I'll just stash it away until next year, and finish it then.
