I would pick up some canine remains and the zombie chihuahua first. That way you can use his and Sebastian's spell lists to full effect.

I also started with McMourning, and I would say that it is advisable to get additional models.

I love McM...but he needs some canine remains to help him out. They are low soulstone models that are handy for their speed, corpse counter transfer and in a pinch being corpses themselves! I bought 2 sets of them (4 dogs total) and they have been great.

Rotten Belles are also good to have to lure things closer for McM to cut up. The Zombie Chihuahua is awesome as well (his totem) as it can provide free body parts for monstrous creations and other various uses.

What you want to add is all based on playstyle and preference of course, the only thing I'd honestly suggest no matter what would be the canine remains and the chihuahua.

Indeed. Chihuahua and Canines are a must.

An additional utility model like a Belle, a Punk Zombie or even a Crooked is nice to have, depending on who you're facing; the Belle is far less useful versus heavily Wp resistant crews, the Punk is great if you expect to see a lot of CC and the Crooked Man is solid if you're dealing with a lot of ranged nonsense (I face off against the Ortegas quite a bit).

It's good to have an extra Flesh Golem should you manage to collect enough body parts to build two (happens more often than you think, especially if you avoid over-use of Passion).

Convict Gunslinger is also a solid choice, if not a must include. Rapid Fire + Trigger Happy is gooey delicious.

I tend to group the dogs with Sebastian due to their companionship, McM and his Chihuahua. The support models I place depending on the encounter, but it's nice to keep the Punk near Seb or Doug, if only to enjoy their medical expertise during bouts of emo self mutilation. The Belle often accompanies Doug, trying to pull people in for a quick kill and additional parts.

Yeah if you just want to use the box set you'll still need a second flesh golem and 1-2 packs of remains.

The totem is pretty much and auto-include with him.

Agreed. Cheep corpses (canin remains, chihuahua) and a few heavy hitters (second construct, punk zombies) should be first on the list.

McMourning is a great master though. I think he's one of the best representations of the faction.

He's among the top 4 resser masters for sure :)

As for the box and needing more models:
YES!
Douglas' boxset is most likely the 'weakest' one of them all. Now I don't own him so haven't played him alot (proxied a few times), but the only models in it that I used was Douglas himself (and summoned the construct later).

Soeh.. Yeah. The nurses have some uses, but there's things I'd rather field with Douglas and I'd never, ever!, bring more than a single one.

I also believe Mortimer is a better aid than Sebastian, but if you use him for melee Sebastian is obviously better.

I'd suggest some canines, Mortimer or Sebastian and then a mix of Punk Zombies and Rotten Belles.

Luring a single enemy closer to tear him apart is much better than running your crazily fast McMourning alone into the enemy where he will inevitably be torn apart..

Indeed. Depending on your other minions and the "texture" of the encounter, Mortimer is equally viable now that he can cheat his Exhume flip. I tend to run Sebastian w/ Doug if only because he's a melee powerhouse and that's how I tend to run my McM list. A Piece For Me adds up pretty quick if both Doug and Seb are in the thick.
