Some thieving bastard broke into my husband's car while we were out doing errands this afternoon. Unfortunately, I had boxed a recent sale from Ebay and was planning to ship it this afternoon. The thief slit open the box, took the miniature out, and left the box behind. Aside from that, the thief also made off with a couple of dollars worth of quarters and nickles on the dash board.
I might not have noticed the miniature was missing from the box, except when we arrived at the post office, I grabbed the top and partially-taped flaps of the box bowed open a bit. I thought at first that I had accidently managed to tape it to either side of the openning without actually taping the center - I figured I'd slap another bit of tape on it at the post office. For some unknown reason, the post office was closed (it should not have been - maybe they were gone for lunch..).
This turned out to be lucky because as we were driving home, I started looking at the box more closely. I checked the sides and, sure enough, there was the end of a piece of tape that was firmly centered over the flap. The box had been slit open! I looked inside, found that the thank-you card on top had been crumpled in the corner, and on further inspection, the bubble-wrapped miniature was missing.
When I exclaimed, "there's no miniature in here!" and my husband started laughing! After I explained to him that no, I really had put the miniature in there before I left the house, he sobered up.
There's no damage to the car, so I suspect that either the thief knew how to jimmy the lock with one of those metal sticks the people who rescue you when you lock your keys in the car use, or my husband forgot to lock the car (it's one of those cars that you lock the driver's side and all the doors lock).
Sigh.
