View Full Version : Must almost be Christmas... damned thieves..

Some thieving bastard broke into my husband's car while we were out doing errands this afternoon. Unfortunately, I had boxed a recent sale from Ebay and was planning to ship it this afternoon. The thief slit open the box, took the miniature out, and left the box behind. Aside from that, the thief also made off with a couple of dollars worth of quarters and nickles on the dash board.

I might not have noticed the miniature was missing from the box, except when we arrived at the post office, I grabbed the top and partially-taped flaps of the box bowed open a bit. I thought at first that I had accidently managed to tape it to either side of the openning without actually taping the center - I figured I'd slap another bit of tape on it at the post office. For some unknown reason, the post office was closed (it should not have been - maybe they were gone for lunch..).

This turned out to be lucky because as we were driving home, I started looking at the box more closely. I checked the sides and, sure enough, there was the end of a piece of tape that was firmly centered over the flap. The box had been slit open! I looked inside, found that the thank-you card on top had been crumpled in the corner, and on further inspection, the bubble-wrapped miniature was missing.

When I exclaimed, "there's no miniature in here!" and my husband started laughing! After I explained to him that no, I really had put the miniature in there before I left the house, he sobered up.

There's no damage to the car, so I suspect that either the thief knew how to jimmy the lock with one of those metal sticks the people who rescue you when you lock your keys in the car use, or my husband forgot to lock the car (it's one of those cars that you lock the driver's side and all the doors lock).

Sigh.

Ugh, that's a real bugger. Kind of odd for someone to actually cut the box open and take a miniature though instead of taking the whole thing.

What a wierd sad thief! Although it sounds amusing what he did, it must be real annoying for you to lose a model someone bidded on ebay. Hope you don't get a hard time with the bidder.

That sucks! I hope your bidder is understanding. What kind of miniature was it?

I know around this time of year especially, it's recommended that you should keep all packages out of sight in the trunk or something. At our local mall, they even say if you take a bunch of bags out to your car, but plan on going back in to do more shopping, you should still get in your car and drive it to a different parking area, since the thieves will also watch for people just putting stuff away.

Damn thieves! At least they were nice enough not to damage your car.

Sheesh, that's beyond lousy. I'm glad your car wasn't damaged and to have a sale stolen just sucks. :(

That sucks, some bastard knocked off one of my wing mirrors last weekend. Lucky he wasn't there when I saw the damage as otherwise i'd be typing this from a prison cell!

What mini was it, one of us probably has something in the lead pile to replace it for you...?

That's a kind offer, Gi6er, but unless someone wants to paint it up to match the old and send it off to my customer.. ;) I've already bought the model from a LGS and now it's just a matter of getting it rebased and painted. It was Lilith from Ptolus, and I suppose I'll post a picture in case she finds her way back to ebay.. :)

I've heard all the advice before about keeping stuff in your trunk, not leaving receipts with purchases, moving your car if you're only dropping off.. I guess it just didn't seem near enough to Christmas to worry, or the box seemed small enough and far enough forward under the dash to stay unnoticed. I didn't think someone would break into the car in an open, busy parking lot at noon, either.. =( Well, I won't be ignoring that kind of advice in the future!

I finally finished the 2nd version of the model. In alot of ways, it turned out nicer than the original - but that doesn't make it any less painful (probably could now fetch a higher price on ebay.. sigh).

Thanks for your sympathy =)

Good for you for getting back in there and painting another, although I'm sure that was the last thing you were in the mood to do. :-< I hope the buyer appreciates the effort! The more delicately arched eyebrows on the new version look great, really changes the face.

Much better piece I think - eyebrows really do make a difference.

Did you actually file the eyebrows off in the new one, or just paint them differently?

I filed them and scraped them a bit with my hobby knife.

Agreed--the eyebrows are better than before. Sorry about the mini!
