View Full Version : Do you notice Strange things?

ok, so I just noticed we have 456 members on the site, and I thought to myself, that's a nice pretty number.

Or I'll notice a phone number which is 459-1954 solely due to the sequence of numbers

there are all sorts of little paterns like this I tend to take notice of throughout the day, which I'll mention to people around me, and they'll think I'm basically crazy.

I can't be the only one. So the question is, do you tend to take note of strange things? (which the majority of those around us may not?)

Can't say that I do (and people are probably right... you ARE crazy!! :p: ), but I have a tendency to memorise stupid facts that are neither important or interesting. And, for some reason (perhaps just because I have made the (unconscious) effort to memorise them) I can't help but repeat these facts to people whenever I get the chance. People think I'm crazy too! :hmpf:

I have both of your problems....My head is filled with useless trivial information, that I have no use OR WANT of....

Also, I notice patterns in numbers alot, but I am not 'smart' with numbers. (its not like a rainman thing). I notice it especially on digital clocks and things like license plates.

I also seem to find faces in very odd patterns...on tree trunks, on tiles floors, carpeting, etc. etc.

I wonder if it has something to do with our hobby....attention to detail type thingy?

No, it's probably just insanity...

Actually, studies have shown that people looking at random forms will almost always find a face in it.
The theory is that we spend so much time looking at faces, particularly as infants, that our brains develop a tendency to constantly look for faces.

As to numbers, when I was in California they gave me a couple options for my telephone number and I chose the one that ended 2,4,6,8.
Everyone who learned my number said "oh, that must be easy to remember." I couldn't figure out why for the longest time. I chose it because that sequence is very easy to type on a phone or computer number pad. It took me a while to realize that it was counting by 2s.

haha, you didn't wonder why after telling someone your phone number, they always replied with "who do you appreciate!"

or was I the only one who was made to do that stupid chant in childhood sports?

No, it's probably just insanity...

Agreed. And it's that insanity which allows us to paint tiny little things with intricate details.

I notice strange things and weird patterns all the time in all sorts of things, even if they're not supposed to have patterns.

Yes, I'm crazy. :bird:

Only faces? The last time I was at the dentist (which was fairly recently), during the teeth torture, I remember making out an old man's face, a dog, a foot and a peach in the patterns of the ceiling acoustic tiles.

Of course that's nothing compared to the things I made out in the patterns of the walls of my parent's 1/2 bathroom. I remember the bird-like doctor pushing the gurney with two patients on it, a terrirer-like dog-headed patient and the other looked like some kind of skinny walrus. And the earless elephant wailing in the corner.

Do I qualify for crazy yet?

I'm with Duende on the seeing everything in everything... clouds turning into faces or whole scenes, wallpaper reading like a picturebook. But also very much the details on everything... a large field with red flowers and I spot the orange one, one bit of weed between tiles on a square and many many more things. Colours, shapes, sounds and yes even numbers (be it not as much as Eric). Do I think I'm nuts a bit... nah not really... i like it.... and you are all invited to my party for the crazy in the mental institution... the men in the white coats said I could if I prommised to stop chewing on the furniture.

nope, never seen lost...

ok, another thing I do which I always find really odd. Is that I dream I'm reading a book, not just in abstract, but I'm actually reading and looking at each individual word printed on the paper. I'll read pages and pages. And I'll even have cognative dreaming, aware I'm dreaming, aware I must be making up the words in the book as I read, which makes me focus more on the words, or skip around the page to try to trick my mind because I obviously can't dream whole pages at one time, but I never can trick my subconsious mind which is making up this book. Then I'll wake up with whole stories or passages I can still remember from reading it.

Do you remember actually seeing the words?
I've been told you cannot actually read in dreams because it requires a part of your brain that is inactive during dreaming.
I don't believe it though. I'm sure I've read things, though not entire books.
Most of the time though, it seems to be true. In a dream I'll see a sign and know what it says, but won't actually see the individual letters. When I try, because somehow my subconscious remembers I'm not supposed to be able to, the letters usually dance around in front of my "eyes"

yep, definately see words. I become cognative that I'm reading in my dream, so I focus on it, try to understand it, etc...and am very aware what's going on. But despite the disbelief, the words stay on the page, and I can still read them.

You really are a bunch of freaks, aren't you?? You think it's contagious? Like smiling..?

I'm getting out of here before 'I see dead people' too...

When I heard that people couldn't read in dreams, I thought "I do it all the time". Not entire books like Eric, but parts of them. My reading usually gets interrupted by something or someone in the dream.

When I was a kid, I had the exact same dream every night for months. I was told that was impossible, but I did. And it was a bad one.

I have a habit of noticing idiosyncrasies that people have. Mostly with expressions they use in their speech, but also some of their mannerisms. When I bring it up, they wonder what the hell I'm talking about. But others who observe these people also start noticing them once I bring it up.

Also, if I'm exposed to someone with an accent for even a short period of time, I start actually using it myself. I went on an observing run while in grad school where I spent some time with a Brit, and Aussie, and a Brazilian. I spent the better part of a month with them. I came home with the wierdest accent ever.

As a kid, I not only had the exact same dream every night for months, but the dream recurred every now and then for years. The last time I had the dream was when I was in grad school about 10 years ago, but I still remember every vivid detail from having had it so often.

It was a scary dream too, though there's no reason it should have been. It just left me feeling afraid.

I remember once dreaming I heard a non-existing song by an existing band that I like. The song had a verse and chorus and lyrics and the instrumentation was the same as the band uses. When I woke I could hum the song. I have forgotten it now, but I remembered the melody for a week or so... Didn't remember the lyrics though, but I could hear them clearly in the dream.

Haha, well, to combine the 2 threads...I had a dream last night that I watched the entire episode of Heroes...which doesn't air until tonight...

I'm going to bet my dream doesn't come true however, since the show got pretty crazy.
