So I've been noticing reciently that pretty much every Games Day entry is on a GW type base, and every entry in any other competition is on a base like what Wyrd/PP use.

So is it an unwritten rule that games day entries must not be on the fancier type bases? Do you think it would hurt my entry should I put it on such a base? The basing rules are so vague for Games days I just don't know, or if it would $$$$$$$$ off judges...

just wondering.

It's Games Day. Pander to the GWness. I think people use the GW bases for Games Day on the odd theory that a piece could theoretically be used in an actual game.

here in aus the "all knowing and powerfull" decided that golden daemon should be gaming mini's, not display mini's. therefore all golden daemon entries must be on their appropriate bases.

i think this is a stupid idea as its a painting comp not a gaming model comp, and every other countries ( as far as im aware ) golden daemon is a painting comp where you can let your imagination run rampart and not have to worry about what base its supposed to be on.

Much as I love the round premium bases such as we supply with Wyrd, I think Noel pretty much hit it on the dot there when she says 'pander to GW'. Being their product I think its safe to say they want it used instead of something like the display bases, etc.

I wouldn't run the risk of having the judges grumble about me using an obvious non-GW component on an entry that I have spent a fair amount of time on, regardless of whether the rules clearly forbids it or not.

Im not 100% sure but i think you have to use the correct sized base the model comes with but there are some exceptions.

Eric : come to France ;) :

But as the others said : when in Rome, do as the Romans ;)

On the other side, for now, they've only put limits on the sizes of the bases (they don't specifically mention Citadel/GW), and you can always add a scenic presentation base as long as the mini isn't attached to it (Mike (Dragonreach) brought one monstruous display base for a Marine champion ... the judges didn't say anything against it).

Yeah, I'm not talking about about improper size of base, just a different brand. I'm totally happy using the GW type, it just seemed to be one of these unwritten and unmentioned rules...that I felt like mentioning, haha

I was looking around for bases, and precast stuff is all becoming in the style of the PP base now, which I guess cuts down on precast bases in Games Days?

There are still quite a few GW style bases precast. But yeah more and more are getting a PP base style in their range now to. Personally I prefer those. But for the GD... better safe then sorry... go for the GW type.

I would also personally prefer to use a scratchbuilt base for the same reason as not using a PP style base, on the off chance that the judges recognise the precast base.

Since everybody is all too polite to ask, here I come with my big boots : "What GD are you aiming at Eric?", feel free to send me out to choke on the above mentionned boots ;).

Hah! I'd love to say it was for something fun upcoming, Spain, Italy...but no, nothing so exciting. I'm thinking of probably ATL or LA, which is about 6 months away still. I just figured if I get started now, and have all the cold winter months to paint, rather than about 2 months ahead of time (in spring), I might have a better showing! :)

Got one simple entry nearly done (except for the base...which motivated this thread), another more complex project all converted/sculpted, that one is waiting for paint, and quite a few other ideas planned out.

Wait, didn't you take first with your gollum on a rock over the moon-lit water? How much better can you do?

well, I suppose you can win in multiple categories..

Well, yes, I had 4 entries and got a gold and bronze, so I'm not upset or anything! Mostly I think I wasn't completely content with my entries and don't feel like I personally did my best. I would like to come with a few entries which I can say I did as good as I could do, and which show off what I can do. Perhaps that is a better way of putting it. :)

I'm also not real sure my plan, I sort of want to go to ATL, due to knowing people there and wanting to meet a lot more. Then 3-4 weeks later is LA...which is close to me and I can drive down to...so if I end up trying to do both, I'd like to have entries!
