Welcome one and all to the 2nd installment of the IRON PAINTER.

First things first, we have lots of new members, so everyone needs to remember to play fair and honor your agreement!

Secondly...since the participation is so much more, the grand prize is being boosted to $50 (don't tell me missus...)

THE THEME IS

Weathered.

How you accomplish that is up to you. "Weathered" could be anything from a rusty sword to a well worn pair of boots. Ragged clothing, oil stained hat. Dusty cape, etc. etc. ....The theme is to make something look weathered or aged or distressed.

Vincegamer vs. Lavonyor

Geez I thought Iwas going to be pressed for time. But with Malebogia as an opponent I see I only need a couple of hours to through any old crap togeather.

Good luck for the rest of you, no pressure for me!

This is going to be sooooooooooooooooo easy....weathered is my middle name! I can easily pull this one off by painting with a brush in my ass.
It is nice to see I have 2 weeks of utter relaxment in front of me.

I'm glad to see the theme is being well recieved. I think it could be very interesting. To be honest, when I drew it I thought..."Crap, I hope people understand it" But that just goes to show what little regard I have for most of you peons...(see I am well versed in the smack as well!! LOL)Anyhow...Good luck to all of you. Speed is of the essence, so you really should be painting.Feel free to PM me with questions or concerns.

Beelzebrush
09-08-2006, 01:04 PM
I do it because I'm a nice guy.... Just for PaintingPloddy (coz I know he'll need all the help he can get :D )... here's what the theme requires (taken from askoxford.com).....

Weathered

• adjective 1 in its original condition. 2 clean and fresh as if new. 3 untouched and unused. 4 without stains or rust

Origin Old English

Hope that gives you a bit of direction... good luck lol

I don't know anything about "aronbc".

I'll have you know I've probably been weathering long before any of you were born. (On the other hand, I'm not sure I want to call the rust effect I painted on a Lionel train tressle almost 30 years ago something to be proud of. Perhaps I should try to find it just to get a laugh from you all.)

Yes I'll probably need to brush up on weathering. When I get home I'll turn on the TV and watch the weathering channel, grab a book and read weathering heights. When I'm done that mini is going to look older than me!

:driver: But first I have to drive home to my minis.

Yes I have uploaded my first WIP photo, fear the weathering potential I possess! Fear my mighty primed mini and base! Fear the fact that the gallery is on moderated status.

Fortunately I can always use the copy from my picturetrail account. Fear my 1337 uploading skills! Fear my mighty mini! Fear my mini's base! Fear the penguin, who isn't really a part of the mini, but as I just came back from an alumni sponsored trip to the local aquarium I had to throw him in the WIP picture!

(Actually I'll use a tiny one here. Go to the gallery for the real McCoy! Or click on him to see a bigger image!)

Ah jester of death, it is an honour to be pitted against you in this contest of brush, paint and metal. (Or resin. Or plastic. Whatever you choose.) While I must acknowledge your superior talents in the arena of smacktalk, rest assured that my win against you in this iron painter round is such a foregone conclusion that I have already prayed to both the shades of your ancestors AND the spirits of your unborn descendants to assure them that your loss against such a talented painter as myself is no stain on your family honour.

I'm not sure I can back my claims, either. I've not yet entered a GD, but I did place fourth in a category at GenCon this year. In all seriousness, I wish you the best and really look forward to seeing your entry!

Oh, I'm feeling great. That smell you smell is just you callumrice. How's the mini coming? Not good enough? Yea, I know, when pitted against my brush it never is.

*disclaimer* - that was totally smack and in no way backed up with past history. No, I don't think that highly of my skills. Last contest, I was first out.

So. prepare to be amazed by a lack of painting skills, and astounded by even worse photography skills.

(My entry is as finished as I'm going to be able to get it. Damn social engagements eating up the painting time)

The only chance I have is if Asmodai doesn't put an entry in. and even then I am sure the judges can give negative points and I'd still lose.

Actually I just got a mini from a Reaper exchange. It's so good I don't know how I will ever photograph it to do it justice. Rotten minis photograph better than excellent ones, so I don't have any problems with that. Add to that the clever plan that my detail doesn't have any degree of detail that I have blatently messed up on. Well there was the attempt that cause red paint which was supposed to go on it's eye to land on it's canine tooth, but that's all corrected now.

09-22-2006, 12:29 PM
I would like to thank the fine people at Kodak. The last thing I ordered from them came in a nice black box. I'm using that as the background instead of white paper and now the minis are better exposed as a result.

I would also like to thank Teddy Rosevelt. Why the people who designed the graphics program I'm currently using desided to use a grayscale image of the former president in their help text boxes I'll never know, but now every time I format an image I just say "Bulllllllllly!"

Last but not least I would like to thank my ironing board. Since it's a pain in the neck to adjust my tripod, it's nice to have an ironing board that you can lower or raise to get those important angle shots.

I ended up with a lot of work and other mundane stuff keeping me from the paints the last half of the week, so even though I'd started in a pretty timely fashion, I ended up crunching in the last couple of stages and photography today. Final photos entered with an hour to spare.

Smack talk aside, I'm really impressed at all the entries I've seen so far! People are doing some great stuff, and some are doing some very ambitious things as well, with multiple figures and so on. I hope to have a chance to comment on the individual entries later. Back into smack talk mode - not only does my magnum opus of weathering crush JOD's beneath its bony heels, but it outshines, er, outdulls all the rest of 'em! ;->

lol, I can't believe I did that! I researched what rust looks like, what it does to wood, pictures of copper cannons, old bones and all kinds of stuff. But did it occur to me to take a look at which way a cannon is mounted? Apparently not! :-> I haven't actually glued everything all together, and I just did a test. I could reverse the wagon direction and mount the cannon correctly, but the lightsourcing will look quite wrong on the cannon then. So which way do you cannon experts figure would look the least stupid?

It was something that amazed me in the 'first' Iron Challenge, was the high level of paint and creativity people display in such a short turnaround.

Very well done group!

Sorry to those who look like they get a 'free pass' onto the next challenge. No shows are part of the game, I'd expect. If you do not recieve your 'prize' from your victim let me know, and I will make it right for you.

Also a VERY BIG THANKS to our wonderful Valloa. Once again she has come through with prize support....and everyone should be able to walk away with at least a 'participation' prize.

Thanks FRUSTRATED FATHER for hosting this....and doing the extra work it takes to get these pics into the gallery. Much appreciated.

I am hoping to have the winners announced by Wednesday or so, then I will do random matchups again and have the new theme ready and waiting by next FRIDAY...then the announcement and the madness starts all over again!

Feel free to post questions or concerns here on this thread, or PM me....

You can keep your bottle of water give me a decent pint of Guinness any day.

To be completely honest having travelled 8oo miles for two shows this weekend spending 12 hours on the road driving and all day each day on my feet at teh two shows I now feel to lethargic to worry about it all, my eyes still hurt from looking at beautifully painted mini's at Euro Militaire on Saturday and GD UK on Sunday.

I never entered in Saturday's show that is way above my league plus it is a two day event but I might enter next time if I am home and it doesn't clash again with the GD. I did enter the GD though with 2 entries and made finalist with both :D Plus the CMON Army entry also made the finalists in the open :D

As much as I would have liked to have taken the car into the NEC for GD to run the little ***** down they wouldn't let me get beyond the car park with it. As for Euro Militaire on the Saturday there was just enough room to walk around the traders area and nothing else it was that packed in fact walk is an understatement more like a pushed shufle.
