View Full Version : vs. The Ressurectionists

So I'm new to Malifaux, and I'm enjoying the game, but in going up against the Ressurectionists, Nicodem in particular, I've run into some problems. How do I stop them from just swarming me with Zombie Punks? They have an infinite supply. Every Punk that goes down (which will result in a Slow to Die action) is a token for a new one, and most of my guys are tokens for more of them, plus Mortimer is randomly digging up tokens for more of them. Then Nicodem turns all the tokens into zombies that attack me and can still be turned into more Punks.

Coming from Warmachine I would counter this sort of thing with a Remove from Play effect, which is Sacrifice if I'm understanding things correctly. But do the Arcanists have any Sacrifice effects other than a Hoarcat swarm Devour and the Wendigo's corpse eating?

Ah, I may have answered my own question. The December Acolyte (whom I will own as soon as he's back in stock) is a Grave Robber. He could "steal" corpses away and hide them.

I'll ask the question anyway to see if anyone has any advice for this match up. I play Rasputina, but my crew is mixed and still expanding.

As a Resurrectionist player I find the Acolyte annoying. xD He's stealing my (MY) counters so that I can't summon. Also Devour and Corpse eating can be of use if you can get the counters with them (I don't have the rulebook at hand so not sure how they work, sorry). Against Nico I recommend you attack him as he's really fragile if he hasn't got any MZs around. Don't forget your Ice pillars. I faced a Rasputina force where I had to waste my actions going around / knocking down the pillars all the time.
Also, concentrate on your objectives, you don't need to kill every zombie to win the game. Nico will almost always have 1 VP for Army of the Dead, but you are faster and have more range so you should be able to meet your strategy and schemes.
Hope this helps a bit. :)

Using Constructs against them should work nicely. They don't generate corpses to turn into other undead. That leaves the Ressers with only the models they start with and any counters Mortimer digs up (not too many most of the time). Hoarcats can Devour stuff to sacrifice them but unfortunately that only works on living models.

As said, the Acolyte can steal their corpses. Wait until Nicodem is activated, kill something and fetch the corpses. Just make sure you're not vulnerable to a counterattack. Use Consume the Dead to get rid of any corpses as soon as possible in case the Acolyte gets taken out. You don't want to give them a jackpot of corpses ;P.

Try to focus on Strategies and Schemes that don't require you to kill all your enemies as that proves quite fruitless versus the dead. Schemes like Hold Out and Sabotage should work nicely as the Ressers are a bit slow and limited in ranged attacks.

Oh yeay, and that, most importantly. :D
Dunno how I forgot...

Thanks everyone!

Good point about the Hoarcats not being able to eat undead. It's pretty much the Acolyte as the major corpse denial piece then.

The last game I had against them was just a bad matchup I think. I had Claim Jump, and they had Treasure Hunt, so the Vulture just stole the treasure right off the bat, and then the zombies camped the middle of the map and I had to go there and fight them. 'Tina was never in danger, but I wasn't winning, either. Given enough time I probably could have pulled something out, but they spaced out nicely, and I had the worst cards ever, so I barely got any blasts in against them. It did seem that Nicodem himself was the weak point, but the one turn that I made a play for him I didn't get any masks in my hand and my opponent won initiative, and that was the end of my Cerberus.

At 10 points, Hamelin can be pricey. But if you are having a big problem with Mindless Zombies and corpse counters, he can clear a 6" radius with Hungry Rats, then lay down some serious model control with a few good Masks in your hand.

I was having this same problem as my gaming friend abuses the corpse tokens. The december crew is pretty good against him as both the Acolyte and the Wendigo eat corpse tokens. Your Ice Golem and Ice Gamin won't leave him tokens since they're constructs so you start to limit his options.

Running Ramos, I have the same trouble sometimes. I Started using area effects a lot more- carpet bombing with the spiders, for example- to wipe out more than he could revive when I needed to clear the area. A few would revive, but I usually ended up winning the attrition battle.
