I've just started looking at them. I don't know why the escaped my attention before, I currently think they are an amazing model.

Good wounds, great defense against ranged attacks and AoE. Bury is an amazing trigger and their melee damage is above average for their cost.

Cave In is pretty much the best minion ranged attack available to the entire faction.

And how can you not love Slow to Die which I think is one of the best traits in the game. They can drop a shafted marker doing 3 damage or paralyzing the model that just killed them, as they are likely to end their activation within its range, or if you have a good card to cheat in for their attack you can do some damage and paralyze with their target. Or they can use Cave In if they die at range.

Oh and the board control given by shafted markers is pretty great, especially Claim Jump, Hold Out or Stake a Claim.

I'm not sure why I didn't consider them so badass earlier.

I'm not a big fan of Sybelle though. I recently thought about fielding:
30 stone game
Seamus
2x Belles
2x Crooked Men
2x Punk Zombies

This whole list is Slow to Die!

This gives either a Cache of 6 or I could add another crooked man, belle or a couple dogs.

I used 2 men in a McM crew last night and against Pandora they did very well. The highish Wp, Wounds and blast damage were just what the Doctor ordered and survived the whole game.

I do think that shafted markers are overrated unless you can guarantee dropping three or more as its too easy to avoid them plus they take high cards to get off (9+ to cast) If you are playing P she can push through the markers, hurt you and push back with no fear of being caught.

plus Shafted expires at the end of the turn, so you need to get him moving first.
plus it affects your troops as i recall?

maybe pack up a horde of Belles in one corner, throw Shafted out to the side and your beatsticks out the other side; lure the enemy toward the combat monsters; trying to escape the Fearsome models, they run into Shafted counters :D

I'm reading that a model has to end its activation within 2" of a Shafted marker in addition to the markers being removed. Certainly makes them easier to avoid. I'm thinking in conjunction with Seamus and "No Escape" could certainly make some more fun issues.

But otherwise to me, the shafted markers seem more like limited board control designed to keep the ortegas and other shooters running around so they can't draw a bead.

But that brings up an rules clarification. Say we lure a model that has not been activated yet within 2" of a shafted token. Seamus then activates and uses No Escape on that model. Seamus's activation ends. The lured model now activates and attempts to move. Seamus charges with No Escape. For argument's sake, the lured model now fails to disengage and ends its activation within 2" of the marker and is hit by Cave in. Is Seamus also hit, or did he technically end his activation there and therefore is not hit?

Seamus doesn't activate when he charges with No Escape so it won't trigger Shafted either. The model who's activating would trigger it though and have to flip.

The main reason behind people ignoring Crooked Men for now is probably because they haven't been released yet. I haven't tried proxying anything yet. Crooked Men are definitely a must buy when they are released though. They should work wonders with Nicodem and Leveticus. Leveticus can give them the :crows needed for an automatic Paralyzed when they hit something. With Nicodem they'll be Df8 against shooting and Cb7 for general fighting purposes. They also should definitely be worth their cheap price against any lists that use a lot of ranged attacks or blasts (Rasputina, Perdita etc.). It's not always necessary to get the Shafted marker to do damage/killing/Paralyzing, just the board control might be enough to save your models or strategies.

And Shafted is probably at it's best if you can use it with Slow to Die. Even if the model that killed the Crooked Man doesn't end it's activation at that point you can either try to control where he can escape, or make sure that he has to move somewhere. Or you can even cast it near another unactivated model to make sure he'll move away. For example near something that would like to Flurry or Rapid Fire.

Pardon the noob.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but I can't seem to find a "Crooked Man" mini anywhere in the online store. I must've missed it. Is it listed? Is there an image, somewhere? Thanks!

Was wondering if there was an official release date yet as I can`t see for looking. If not anytime soon. What proxies could be used?

The models look rather great and I think I might even use them as extra Mindless Zombies if I need many of those and am not playing Crooked Men.
