I am having a devil of a time being effective by any stretch of the imagination against the Ortegas... specifically Nino.
Please help.

Put more terrain on the board.
Half your crew should be able to close without getting shot.
Check out the book.

I was thinking about that on the drive in. I've been in "getting the ropes new guy mode" for the past 3 games, but i think i need to start pushing the terrain placement order more, for the sake of my, and my spiders sanity.

Soft cover is key. Make them take the negative flip to damage to prevent cheating.

the problem i seem to have with soft cover is nino's ability to bypass it.
in the face.
and torso.

Also, Soft cover is just a :-fate for the to hit roll. Which is nice as it means they cannot cheat the to hit, I believe anyway.

I dunno man, whenever I field Nino I have the hardest time keeping him from being turned into a duffel bag full of Campbell's Chunky Soup. Overwhelm him with targets until you get something to within melee range. If any of your minions can Charge or Leap that will help.

Right, to hit, my bad.
As for Nino, I guess keep the spiders scattered, so they have higher defense and provide multiple targets.
I don't have any real players around here, so I haven't really had a chance to try anything with this.

You could always use defensive stance and advance slowly, giving your spiders :+fate :+fate on defensive flips... Also, the Steamborg is pretty darn fast and makes a great head hunter. Just circle him around and smack Nino from behind while he is shooting at your spiders.
Other than that, use terrain to your advantage.
