Step right up boys and girls!!!

An epic battle at the end, but who's Nightmare reigned supreme?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/ironpainterver2.jpg

In this fantastic finish the scores are thus:

Commander Y 55 vs. Bren 53

And the difference was all theme. While the other categories showed an exact tie, it was the two extra points in theme that made Commander Y our new champion!!!

Congrats to the Commander, and congrats to all the participants!!

Apologies for the timing of this IP. This season was marred with waits either on my part, or the judges, or the season....But, if it were easy EVERYBODY would do it!!!!

Prizes will be announced soonish!

Ballots:

Eric J:

Name: Commander Y
Theme: 4.5
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 8.5
Notes: While perhaps the stronger theme of the two pieces, it’s really quite disturbing and has a questionable level of taste…but I have a feeling that’s what you were going for, lol. Otherwise the scene is well constructed, the painting is very well done, and you’ve hit the theme pretty well. I just have to notch down the overall score due to subject matter.

Name: Bren
Theme: 4
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9
Notes: I actually really understand the nightmare reference here, mostly because of my love of zombie movies, and taking zombies and using them in different ways, and of course the models fit the scene very nicely. The colors you’ve chosen and the whole color palate works perfectly to create the scene, although I think it would have created a bit better sense of the light, if the other parts of the scene had a reddish light to it as well. One little issue that tends to stick with me, is that while lettering is incredibly difficult to get perfect, it stands out so much when there are little imperfections and I know with your painting skill with a bit more time the lettering could have been more perfect.

Brushmistress:

Commander Y

Theme: 5
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9.5

Comments: A truly nightmarish scene your created here. The askew walls create that sense of forced terror-inducing perspective used in films,
and is the most creative touch in the scene for me. I'm a little disturbed by the subject matter, but I'm guessing that's what you wanted. Excellent
use of a darker palette & nice conversion/scratch build work with Candy.

Bren

Theme: 4
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9
Comments: This is an impressively big build for the time span, and while it does a good job depicting a seedy red light street corner, I don't get a nightmarish
feel from it. I think that a half baked & horrified prospective client would've brought the piece together a little more. Great use of LEDs (would love to see
it lit up with better photos) and your painting is fantastic with the Belles, particularly the front lady - that face is amazing.

Nathan

Name: Commander Y
Theme: 5
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9
Notes: I'm going to just be out right honest and say 'ughg, I don't like this one' and because of that is why you've scored so well.

Not a fan of the subject matter but I swaddle my mind with the idea of that damn ***** reaching down to little Candy and finding a pair of scissors doing him the business, and that's where the nightmare begins. :)

You nailed the theme, created a seriously creepy atmosphere and as usual you've done some really nice brush work.

Name: Bren
Theme: 4.5
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9
Notes: I love the red light district scene here and I'm a HUUUUUGE fan of zombie movies, I watch them all, good or bad.

This really sets a nice scene here and is a nightmare for sure for anyone that gets caught up in the red light district late at night and looks over and finds these alluring ladies of the night and needs to get out quick style. I can just imagine the horrors that'll be visited upon any prospective clients.

congrats Tom, nice to know I lost to the eventual champion. A big congrats to Bren too for some fine work.
This ironpainter seemed tough right from the start - nextone will be even harder I imagine. Thanks to vikey and the judges for all their hard work with this and Wyrd as a whole for hosting it.

"Questionable level of taste..." Well, yeah. That was sorta the point.

So I'd like to apologize to everyone for that last piece... But I guess it did the trick!

Hopefully in the next one I won't have to face the mighty Bren TWICE in one season! Fantastic competition all the way 'round! Thanks, y'all.

It's almost like Nathan can't even type the word "*****." Heh.

Thanks Vikey! Thanks Judges!

Commiserations Bren - you know I was cheering for you from the beginning. :)

Congratulations Tom - that is far and away my favourite piece of yours, ever. Like Nathan wrote, having read Candy's fluff, she was an excellent choice to add a further layer of possible interpretation to the scene!

[And I always admire brave pieces....]

Congrats, Commander. I knew you had at least one IP title in you. Hey Vike, I suggest that next season's Iron Painter winner gets to work with Nathan to design a new Malifaux mini. That would kick ass.

Congratulations to you both for making it to the end. I know how painful and yet exhilarating that can be! And congrats on winning, Tom! I'll admit I was rooting for Bren to keep the IP title on the distaff side where it belongs, but you did great work.

BTW we saw many excellent entries in this last IP : that was a pleasure to follow it.

Yep, well done on the win. :blah: :blah:, (where are you stacking the trophies these days?).

Spend the booty wisely on imported English/Irish/Czech beer.

Meanwhile...

It's been fun watching the contest unfold and seeing some really great entries. Some seriously good painters and modelers on this site. Well done everyone.

:)

Hey folks, I'll get Jim all the codes today for him to hand out. I had forgotten that I had to limit PM activity for me here on the site as I was missing them and I wanted to funnel folks through e-mail for me (best way, otherwise a 100+ PM's a week was going to kill me). Sorry for delay if anyone has tried to get a hold of me that way, I didn't exactly pass it on to the mods about that.

Next IP, I'm going to have to bribe Jim pretty good I think as we gave him the run around as judges this time (mostly just due to plain ol' work on all our parts). I'll find something to bribe the bugger about though!

Next Wyrd Painting Contest - already in the works, though we're handing off that task to Maya (Valloa) as I can't do y'all justice with keeping up with it in a timely manner. I'll let her drag that out and announce it.

Speaking of other painting contests... Did y'all ever get the "Iron Terrain Builder" established? I was really looking forward to that. :D

Nope, that never did take off.

It might be a nice diversion from the traditional IP.

Let me think about it!
