Sonnia dropped her cigarette. A crash resounded through the streets.
"Blast, what was that?" She grabbed her runeblade and sprinted out of her office, calling the two Stalkers on guard along with her. As she poured out of the Guild headquarters, two of the Ortega family ran up beside her, and she signaled one of the Austringers nearby to join her.
A large cloud of dust was rising just a few blocks away. As her ragtag crew rushed, she cursed the ill luck that Samael was out on assignment, hunting a particularly dangerous witch that had escaped into the marshes. She ran through an inventory in her head; Perdita was laid up, along with her elder brother, after an encounter with Killjoy, and Lady Justice was off investigating a tip regarding Seamus.
Entering the cul-de-sac where the dust was pouring out of, she saw a hoard of beasts, with known witches Marcus and Miranda at the head, rushing after a sealed crate, clearly preparing to destroy it. The Guild party commanded the only exit. "Grab that crate, immediately, we must discover what they want to destroy it! Seal the street behind us, and execute the witches!"
30 SS game, crews were Sonnia, Santiago, Nino, 2 Witchlings, and an Austringer with a cache of 7SS against Marcus, Myranda, a Rattlespine, 3 Hoarcat Prides, and a Jackalope. Sonnia drew Treasure Hunt, and announced Holdout and Raid. Marcus drew Slaughter, and announced Breakthrough and Eye for an Eye.
Terrain included two buildings reduced to rubble near Sonnia's Deploy, with a fence connecting one to a Ht2 climbable building. Another Ht2 climbable building off to the left represented the last piece of terrain that factored heavily in. The treasure was on the opposite side of the fence from Sonnia's spawn.
We're both novices, so we both made a lot of mistakes. Marcus didn't use his Companion ability, and grouped his units up, my lack of understanding on how Charging worked ended up costing me quite a bit. But, on to the battle!
Marcus deployed his units in a fairly tight group, while Sonnia spread out, with Nino and Santiago on the right hand side, the Austringer behind the fence looking out, Sonnia between the Ortegas and the Austringer, and the Witchlings on the left hand side near the rubble.
Turn 1: Marcus wins Initiative, and spends his turn moving his troops out towards the treasure (with Myranda spending one action to shapeshift into the Cerberus, then immediately return to human form by casting Leap, netting herself some additional movement). Nino hops up onto the building on the right to get a good vantage point, the Austringer gets a Hunting Falcon attack off on Myranda for 1 wound, the Witchlings advance into the rubble, Santiago moves up along the building connected to the fence, and Sonnia takes a position to support him if he gets rushed hard.
Turn 2: Marcus wins Initiative. His Rattler charges Santiago (if he was a half inch back, the building would have stopped the rattler outside 2 inch range, instead, it was just in attack range), and lands a hit for 2 wounds, triggering Poisonous 2, but fails a Constrict. The Austringer fails to deliver orders, then moves forward and makes a single attack against Myranda, hitting for another single wound. Marcus and the Jackalope activate. The Jackalope leaps near the fence, but not over, and can't charge the Austringer. Marcus charges Santiago, casting Wild Heart twice for Snake and Fox, landing two out of his resulting 3 melee attacks for a total of 4 damage, putting Santiago to 6 wounds taken. Sonnia activates, and throws some fire into the fight, dropping the Rattler to 1 wound remaining and dishing some decent damage on Marcus, who spends one of his SS for a prevention flip. Myranda advances towards the fight, failing her Shapeshift cast, and Nino then Sets Sights on her, fires, and hits a Mask. My opponent decided to cheat with his second last card to try to avoid a Trigger Happy trigger, but I use the 13 of Crows for a headshot, instantly killing her (there's some of that novice play). Nino spends his second shot attempting to shoot into the melee, targeting Marcus, but flipping an Ace to Marcus's 13. Hoarcats advance, Witchlings kill the Jackalope, Santiago eats Poison 2, going to 1 wound for Hard to Kill, finishes the Rattler spawning another Jackalope, and fails to cast his heal.
Round 3: Marcus wins Initiative and spends his first action to kill Santiago. He then casts Heart of the Wild, choosing Bear, then again getting an extra effect, and going for Fox and Snake, charging Sonnia. He gets in for a total of 5 wounds. Sonnia activates and casts Inferno. She then puts a Wall of Fire up between the Hoarcats and herself, limiting the melee to just her and Marcus. She then attacks twice for a total of 5 damage, healing 2 wounds, stealing 2 cards, and drawing 2 new ones (a 5 and a 6 to go with the ace, ace, two, four, six I was sitting on already). Hoarcats dance around the flame, Witchlings go and get the treasure unopposed, Nino hits 2 prides for a few points each, Austringer gets a Hunting Falcon on the third for 5 points.
Round 4: Marcus wins Initiative. Casts Bear and Fox, then hits Sonnia for a total of 1 damage on the turn (bad flips on his part and prevention flips on both attacks, at this point I was hoping to throw the weight of my 7 SS cache against his 4). Witchlings start moving back towards the Deploy (I'm reasoning I can very easily achieve Strategy and Holdout if Sonnia, Nino, and Austringer can hold off the enemies, with his two scariest Henchmen down). Austringer gets another hit in on a Hoarcat Pride. Hoarcats all advance, one gets into melee with Nino, and hits him for 4. Sonnia activates, uses Confiscated Lore, as the Prides were within nuke range, and Flame Blasts three times, killing Marcus and wrapping Flame Blasts around the Hoarcats, leaving just one alive. Jackalope activates, leaps onto the rooftop with Nino, and charges for 4 damage, killing him.
Round 5: Sonnia wins Initiative. Sonnia activates, and easily finishes the remaining Hoarcat pride. Witchlings hit deploy zone and the final score is 8-0 Sonnia.
We made a lot of screwups, him not using Companion on Turn 1, and opening himself up to a Headshot from Nino kept him from having the muscle to take my Witchlings out. He also was low on SS, and so he couldn't go toe-to-toe with Sonnia the Flamethrower. Another key was his zeal in maximizing Devour. He opened his Prides up to my bursts, and taking repeated damage from them will even wear down Evasive units.
I opened Santiago up to get slammed, but it ended up working in my favor, as it bogged his Rattler down for the turn I needed to blow it away. In addition, his melee-only crew trying to slaughter my ranged-heavy crew on a treasure hunt was just a terrible matchup for him.
